hand probs with speech - anyone else?

Posted: Jun 25, 2014

Does anyone notice their fingers/hands/wrists being more adversely affected after going to voice recognition? Probably the constant repetitive motion of using mainly the pinky and thumb now rather than normal typing where all the fingers are being moved. Anyone else ?

Yes, I had to return to straight typing only - sm

When I first started doing VR, everything was fine. But then, after about 2 to 3 months, I started to get pains that I have never had before. Eventually, after another couple of months, I had to go back to just straight typing because the pain was just gradually becoming worse and worse.

The way I had to hold my hands and wrists, and my hand/finger movements were totally different with VR, and the constant repetitive motion in such an unnatural position and awkward muscle movements were a killer for me. If I hadn't stopped VR and gone back to straight typing, I probably wouldn't be using a keyboard today.

Same here. - sm

I tried editing thinking it would be better for my wrists as I was diagnosed with CTS. It made it worse and also made my elbows start hurting, which has never happened before. I think, as said above, it is the unnatural position of the hands needed for editing. I was constantly reaching for keys I never used before for some of the key combos we were required to use. I quit after 5 months due to the pain. I am glad to hear others have the same issue. Other MTs thought I was crazy when I complained about the pain saying VR should be easier on the body, but I don't think it is. My hands and arms do much better with ST because they are able to remain in the same spot in an ergonomic position, not reaching all over the keyboard.

I find it easier physically - Harder mentally

First, I only use keystrokes for editing.

I don't use my pinky at all. I rest my left hand sideways, pinky resting on desk, so I can use ctr + shift, etc., easier. My left thumb and forefinger are resting on the ctrl + shift, etc. I use my right middle finger for the arrow keys. I find it to be very relaxing on my body.

My brain is a different story with VR, lol.

Never a problem, never stopped using the - mouse even in editing

I thought what the .... about having to learn something new after first learning the mouse some years ago and nope, didn't want to do and didn't do. It makes no difference because I can do many, many lines on VR so I thought why all the hype about using this. I guarantee, can do just as many, probably more lines, than most just using my mouse as in regular MTing.

Heck, half the time I speed read through it first - The Typing Dead

and fix things, then I play the ASR while I play with my hair. Serious, I keep my right thumb on CTL and my thumb or my left middle finger on + and just zip through. Anyone who is using their pinky finger and keeping in place on home keys is just asking for physical trouble.

This might work if your company has good VR - unfortunately most do not

Your method might work if your company has the percentage set high enough (meaning that a certain percentage of the report has to be correct before the physician is placed on VR).

Unfortunately, many companies set the percentage so low that a physician is place on VR even though the reports are still coming out like gibberish. At my company, there were at least two (and often more) corrections to be made to each and every sentence in the report, and there was no way to tell what the physician might actually be saying until you actually listened to the voice recording itself.

I may be dense but - you keep your left thumb

or middle finger on +?? Maybe you have a different keyboard than I do, but that sounds horribly awkward.

Yes, and my wrists as well. Never had a problem before ASR. - NM
