Alzheimer's versus Alzheimer - Nana

Posted: Jan 15, 2014

I was always told to type Alzheimer's as Alzheimer, which the second being what is correct in the medical dictionary (sorry it's late and can't remember the dictionary name, but the one they have us use). When I sent a report to QA with several blanks, there were several things "corrected" in the report, the above being one of them. Anyone know which is to be used?  Have I been doing it wrong all these years?  I always drop the s if it isn't proper. Thanks.

oh honey. that is one of MANY corrections - ORIF expanded, not expanded, cranial nerves

roman and Arabic. I could go on. I even ask the whatever her title is quality person (not HSDM) and she said well technically ORIF is not supposed to be expanded and it's supposed to be cranial nerves 2-12 but still to this day get corrected both ways on this. You can't win, trust me. Don't even try.

Your answers are in the Transcription Style Guide - sm

As stated to the OP, the TSG is used before the BOS2 but after the CP rules. For expanding ORIF, generally it says: "Abbreviations and acronyms are to be transcribed as dictated, except in the following instances: Under diagnostic headings, expand only disease-related abbreviations or acronyms. Nondisease acronyms or abbreviations for procedures, tests, measurements, etc., are transcribed as dictated...

Under operation or procedure title heading expand all abbreviations or acronyms."

It also says: "Use arabic numerals for cranial nerves." However, CP comes first. I have an account that says to use Roman in the CP.

But the point is that QA doesn't follow those rules (nm) - anon

If the MME didn't follow the rules that's their problem, not yours. All they give is feedback and it doesn't count against you. If it bothers you, report it to your QAC and they (maybe) will take care of it. Otherwise, brush it off. On audits, they can tell who made what changes. I'm an MME and if I can't quote the reference in feedback, I don't mark it up. It's a simple rule that I think all MMEs should follow, but some are still old school.

Depends on how it's written - sm

Check the Transcription Style Guide. This is what MModal uses before the BOS2. It says this: "Transcribe eponyms without the possessive form. Exception: When an eponym is not followed by a noun (e.g., disease following Raynaud), use the possessive form, e.g., Past medical history is significant for Alzheimer̢۪s."

NIH lists Alzheimer's - Val

But you know MT, without the apostrophe s, it makes the lines shorter -- less money to pay!!

I hate typing Down syndrome instead of Down's syndrome. It sounds like someone fell down versus being the name of a syndrome that somebody went to the trouble to document, research, describe and write about.

Alzheimer's versus Alzheimer - S

The convention these days is to drop the apostrophe when the eponym is used in conjunction with the noun, like "The patient has Alzheimer disease and Sjogren syndrome." However, if the eponym is a stand-alone, you would keep the apostrophe, like "The patient has Alzheimer's and Sjogren's."

AAMT or AHDI or whatever they're called now decided we should drop the 's on all the proper names. I know this major decision of theirs has impacted millions of lives and their health records.

Agree. It's so ridiculous. - anon

If the dictator wanted it that way, they would DICTATE it that way. Instead, QA/MTSOs believe that these abitrary 'rules' are more important than the actual dictator's words. No wonder VR is so bad - all these unnecessary 'corrections' that are not what was dictated.

the style guide says drop the s - Old School

[ In Reply To ..]
This is from the MM style guide: Transcribe eponyms without the possessive form. Examples: Down syndrome, Raynaud disease. Exception: When an eponym is not followed by a noun (e.g., disease following Raynaud), use the possessive form, e.g., Past medical history is significant for Alzheimer̢۪s. For her Crohn̢۪s, the patient will be treated with Pentasa.

So unless it was just Alzheimer without the word "disease" after it, you had it correct, and you can take this to your QC and say you were following the style guide.

End Point Versus Endpoint And Hand Grip Versus Handgrip
Mar 13, 2012

Two words that come up often for questioning.  These are strictly used in an orthopedic setting.  Stedman's and Dorland's list end point and hand grip HOWEVER the office transcription manager,  girl is asking for me to correct this to endpoint and handgrip. VR Versus SR
Feb 20, 2010

I am not familiar with VR and have never used it, but I understand that there is a difference between voice recognition (VR) and speech recognition (SR). I am told the difference is that with VR the program has to be trained because it goes by voice only, sort of like us getting used to different dictators when we start a new account.  SR is supposedly different in that it goes by speech alone, meaning I guess, just the actual words dictated and is not affected by voice differences. Does ...
