ASR versus ST - Curious One

If you were offered 9 cents for straight transcription and 7 cents for ASR, which would you prefer to do...editing at 7 cpl or transcription at 9 cpl or both? If you had to do both, but at given rates, would that be satisfactory?

It depends on the ASR program, I believe. I use eScription/EditScript and I'd most definitely go with the 7 cpl for editing because I produce about 2-3x more lines with editing than straight transcription; however, I read on these boards that many of the VR platforms aren't nearly as MT-friendly as eScription and require tons of cleanup on each and every report, no matter how good the dictator might be.

I think a lot of MTs here will indicate they would prefer the straight transcription at 9 cpl, but in all honesty, if it were on an eScription platform, I'd grab the 7 cpl for VR. Off the top of my head, I'd say that's a really good rate for editing and, with an MT-friendly platform and decent dictators, I think you could do very nicely with it.

Thank you so much for your honesty and your input. I just did a quick search, and a Seattle hospital converted to eScription and was extremely satisfied with the results...2008. This, coupled with your review of same, definitely gives me another route to consider.

Anyone with input regarding M-Modal or DQS versus each other and/or versus eScription?

to require a lot of corrections, and I would guess that the rate compares fairly well to what can be earned by transcription. I base that solely on the fact that I did TX and SR for similar rates and did quite well.

BTW, although I loved EditScript (the editing arm of eScription we work on) when I had it, the % of errors coming through is actually agreed on and set by management negotiation. A lot of programs now can be creampuffs if the % is set low enough. But this one won't be at 7 cents--unless the company is trying to throw money away.

Actually, I am in the process of starting a company (infancy stages right now), and I am just posting to get feedback from MTs to see what their thoughts are on various subjects. I am trying to figure out what rates to charge clients and if I even want to bother with SR. I for one do not like editing...I AM A TRANSCRIPTIONIST!

My thought is that I would start all dictators off on middle ground rates. Then, if dictator is horrid, would give opportunity to improve or raise rates for that dictator. Vice versa, if dictator is wonderful, then would put on SR and lower rates as incentive. At least that's my thought.

I did try to startup last year but didn't even get a nibble; however, I gave up way too soon. As such, I'm developing a much better plan this go around and hope to start trying to get clients spring of next year and have no plans of giving up on this endeavor!

I want a company that makes a decent profit, keeps jobs here in the US, has very low turnaround of employees, and pays employees a decent wage based on US standards of living with decent benefits. I may have to start off with IC status or, preferably, Statutory Employee but eventually would hire as regular employee.

Thinking of seeking out an investor even. That way, no worries over payroll at startup.

I guess I might as well ask for the moon but, hey, you never know!

I am not familiar with VR and have never used it, but I understand that there is a difference between voice recognition (VR) and speech recognition (SR). I am told the difference is that with VR the program has to be trained because it goes by voice only, sort of like us getting used to different dictators when we start a new account. I was just wondering if anybody is getting transcription anymore. after a week straight of NJA...as well as the last 2 months or so of sporadically getting that dreaded message (!)...I had had it. Had sent numerous messages with very brief and cryptic responses as well as often not even getting work flow updates, which were commonplace with other CCMs.... spoke to new CCM who was 'aghast' that ASR was not in my pool. She felt that was the sole reason I was getting no work (???) Anyway, now getting work.....ALL ASR...better than nothing ...

A very interesting post over in the VR forum which is proof IMO why we are going so broke doing ASR, and isn't even taking into account how horrible MQ DocQSpeech software is.
