does anyone REALLY love their job anymore? - mt

Posted: May 11, 2010

Lately I have talked to many friends who are all disillusioned with their careers.  The state of the economy has made it worse, but I really think the problems existed before that happened.

They come from all walks of life and all occupations.  Everyone seems to want out of whatever they are doing.  The ones I have spoken to include teachers, attorneys, nurses, doctors, police officers and of course MTs.

Anyone out there know someone with a great and (as stable as it can be) career that they REALLY love?

My sister-in-law loves her job...a stay-at-home mom! - nm

happy - mt2

I am very happy being an MT. I am thankful that I have an abundance of work and am at home. I think many times about looking outside the house for a job, but then the first time it rains or snows I would be tempted to quit. LOL. I do get bored sometimes and wish I had more activities outside the home, but overall I am very happy with my chosen profession.

My husband has an odd-ball career that he loves. - Sunshine State MT

He is a golf ball diver. He has been doing it for a little bit now. He just loves his job. He works for this guy who has the diving contracts on golf courses and my husband will go to a golf course and dive in all the lakes for all the golf balls that people hit in the water. They all get refurbished.

So far it has been pretty stable for him and he really likes it.

I've never even thought of that before! - sm

I bet he gets a good deal on greens fees too, huh?

You would think, but no he doesn't . . . - Sunshine State MT

[ In Reply To ..]
He was so bummed because he's a golfer himself and he thought that it would be one of his perks. All of the courses with one exception will give him no break at all.

The one that does give him "free golf" I guess is a real crappy course.

How cool. Better watch out for alligators! Has this been on - Dirty Jobs?

[ In Reply To ..]
Not that it's really dirty or anything, but sounds like something that would fit maybe on that show. I'd like to see it. I think I did see something about it on some show at one time. Anyhoo, your husband or his boss should call and see if Mike will come out and do a show with them. :)

Yes it was and we both missed it. - Sunshine State MT

He used to work for the guy that was on that episode. It's been on like twice and twice we both missed it.

Alligators are his biggest concerns. If he sees an alligator in one of the ponds he will just get into another one. Sometimes he has to call the alligator trapper because it might be a nuisance.

The funniest story he came home with is he was diving this one gated community golf course. There were a couple of houses close to a lake he was diving in. There was an alligator in the lake but my husband said it was a really small baby alligator, like 2 foot or something, and he got into the lake anyways, which he normally does for the smaller gators. Anyway, one of the residents saw the gator and saw my husband in the water and saw my husband splashing his flippers, which he normally does. Anyways, this lady calls 911 and tells the operator this guy is getting mauled in a lake. Meanwhile my husband is just going about his routine. He said he surfaced and he saw about 10 cops with guns drawn at him in the water and freaked out! He said he yelled out "I work here" and they shouted back "We heard you were being mauled by a gator."

Anyways, it's good that people are looking out for him.

I absolutely love my job. It's been my dream job since I was a pre-teen, and I'm 41 now. Been with the same company for 6 years now, and I love it, love my 3 accounts, love my supervisor and even the 2 previous supervisors, all of it....well my paycheck could be better, but I figure, I could have a job making more money that I am miserable at, so I'm happy sitting at home in my comfy sweats and enjoying my job

Amen to that!!!!! - Happy MT Robin

[ In Reply To ..]
I hear you, Marine Mom. The job I had right before I got into MTing paid A LOT more than I make now (and I make a pretty decent living now) but I was suicidal. The money wasn't worth the visions of driving into my garage and shutting the door and leaving the car running, and it darn sure wasn't worth putting up with the kind of garbage I convinced myself to put up with for 4.5 years.

I love this job now. Absolutely love it. No office politics. No small family owned business bull "stuff" and double standards. I worked inhouse for four excruciating months for a large clinic and I'll never do that again. The backbiting and backstabbing and just blech that went on there day after day was interminable.

I'm with Hayseed's post down below. I have a climate controlled environment (as much as it can be controlled with evaporative coolers in the summer in the high mountain desert), I dont' have to deal with people if I don't want to (and I rarely want to), if it's snowing outside in the winter, I get to sit and watch it and make a fresh cup of coffee and go back to work with my slippers on.

It just doesn't get better than that for me.

My fiance does! - Typin_away

He is an EMT. He make a measly $10 an hour saving lives, but he loves it. He has dreams of going back to school to become a paramedic and then back again to get a degree on being a nurse/paramedic hybrid.

EMT - I have a friend who took that same route

[ In Reply To ..]
he is now a flight nurse and love it....very cool!

No, I don't think anyone likes any kind of work these days - Particularly nurses and patient care

[ In Reply To ..]
I don't know of anyone who likes their work anymore except for the people who are homeless and don't have food. They would love any of our jobs.

No, I don't think anyone likes any kind of work these days . . . - Nina

[ In Reply To ..]
I strongly disagree . . . I love what I do. I have been a transcriptionist for 15 years, now I am full-time QA with transcribing/editing on the side as an IC. I work at home, great money, have my own house, pay all my bills on my own, pretty much have and do what I want.

I love mine too! - Hayseed

[ In Reply To ..]
I'm a full-time MT here at home and it's the bomb. My only problem is when I get burnout and my production suffers, but I think that's the case with any job...hourly or production.

However, I always wanted to be a farmer and that is my real passion (always thought I'd be running my own greenhouse/garden center/florist biz by now, but, yeah, helps to have a financial backer to pull something like that off and I'm not willing to put my house up for collateral ;-)

So, I am the type of person who is happy playing in poop, working in all weather conditions, and getting dirty for pretty much minimum wage. I even worked for free at a horse barn for over a year (while still holding a full-time paying job) just for the learning experience..."internship" is the fancy pants word for it.

You get out of life what you put into it. This job is tit (pardon the expression, but it is). I sit on my buttocks, in a climate-controlled environment, and transcribe sometimes wicked neato stuff. Sometimes I want to scream and pull my hair out at the bad dictators, but fortunately they are few and far between.

Also, I've blown out my knee twice now and if it happened in my other career of choice (farmin'), I'd be in deep doo-doo with not being able to maneuver around to make a paycheck.

I am very thankful for this line of work I sort of stumbled into. :-)

I think I love you - sm

You sound just like me. If only I won the lottery or my husband landed a killer job, we would move out on the farm and raise organic crops and cows and such for a living. *sigh*
Too bad life doesn't always go along with your dreams huh? I guess I could always take up another MT job for 5 or 10 years....

Hayseed. Where are you working these days? - Remember you from the old days LOL

[ In Reply To ..]
Haven't seen your name around a while. You used to work for DeVenture, right? Where did you end up? You left there before the big Transcend merger, right? Glad to hear your still happy doing what your doing.

yeah, but they are not MTs. - no message

I do. I may only be making $700 a week, but I am sure happy. - Me

[ In Reply To ..]
I might not be getting rich, but I average $700 a week and that is enough for me. Never without any work and have a great schedule.

Me, too! I love this job! - It is so me!

[ In Reply To ..]
I work for an online company that knows the true meaning of IC and I also still do tapes but I love getting out once in a while. I make my own hours, I make dinner and I never miss an event for my children since I can plan around just about anything!

Life is good! No, I'm not rich either, but my husband and I love the fact that we can multitask and make the best of what we have.

I don't know if I would call it love - - - sm - NYMT

[ In Reply To ..]
but I can't imagine doing anything else! My only drawbacks are no paid time off, no benefits, but the pay is good, especially for an MT, and I have nobody, NOBODY telling me when to work other than myself. I love medical language, I love the facility I feel when I'm typing well. I guess if I won the lottery or something I probably wouldn't do it full time, but I'd probably keep at it some because I would miss it if I didn't.

Can't say love but grateful right now... - cindyoh

[ In Reply To ..]
..overworked with mandatory OT, actually, but due for a week off shortly and can't wait. Couldn't sell house so obviously need to stay right where I am but don't have the confidence or trust I used to have even though I've transcribed for over 30 years. Having to change companies because of a paycut a year ago was a wake-up call about the realities of our economy, and I'm just hoping to hang on to what I have till retirement. Wonder if I'll truly ever feel "safe" again.

That's a good point. Whether you are a business owner, employee or IC - Things are rough out there

[ In Reply To ..]
I don't know many people who are doing well at any level these days and I don't see any light at the end of the tunnel yet either.

All the business owners I know, MT and otherwise, are hurting. Many, but not all MTs are hurting. Some are doing well, but wondering how long it will last since nobody else is doing well. I think we live in interesting times.

How would you like to be a Stock Broker on days like today? - Probably having nightmares

[ In Reply To ..]
I don't know how they take the pressure.

Have to say, I love Mmodal.  My CCM is caring and considerate and kind.  Also, love the pay and hardly ever running out of work but when we do, that is a nice break for me.  I just put the pedal to the metal and don't take anything posted here to heart cuz, lots of angry people just wanting to take you down.  Pass on the love!!! ...

A new ESL dictating a DS. Can't speed him up because he's too "new" (to this country?). He is spelling every other word!!!!!! AND then spells it again - extubated, e-x-t-u-b-a-t-e-d, extubated e for elephant, x for crosses, t for tom, u for umbrella, b for .......... get the picture (sigh)? On top of that, the report is 28 minutes long!!! Should never have gotten out of bed this morning. LOL I do feel bad for him that he doesn't realize he doesn't have to spell every other ...

I Can't Take It Anymore!!
Jan 18, 2010

I have had 6 (SIX!) reports come through, all having the same mush-mouthed, fast talking, whispering, ESL doctor.  Oh, and the sing-song thing is really about to make me blow my stack. I swear, he is so bad that I can't even understand the patient's name!!!! I am going to pull my hair out.  Yep, I feel it coming.  It takes me forever just to get through ONE of his reports.  He gets so many blanks that I honestly feel sorry for the QA person that end ...

Not An MT Anymore!!
Apr 25, 2011

Working at .075 cpl for ScribeRight I made a whopping 12K in 2009. Wow - let's all run out and take MT classes to jump on that bandwagon.  Anyway, I quit my MTSO pimp and went to work for a well-known Italian restaurant chain in 2010. I work in the kitchen 6 hours a day for 5 days a week (Mon-Fri lunch shift with no nighttime or weekend shifts) and make about 15% more than I did as an MT. I am not an IC anymore but rather an employee, so I saved a bunch on my social ...

I Just Don't Know Anymore
Feb 27, 2012

My bubble has been burst.  I was with eTransPlus when the Q swallowed them up and then I left.  Now, I'm with another MTSO and it's awful.  I've only been MTing for 5 years.  I was an office nurse (LPN) for 13 years before that and I wanted a change.  My first job was with a great company and then the huge acct I was on was bought out by an MTSO, so I had the choice of being laid off or going to IC status.  I chose to be laid off thinking I could draw ...

I Can't Do This Anymore
Aug 01, 2013

I just cannot do this anymore with MMmodal.  I cannot sit here for 14 hours a day for 800 lines.  I am completely broke, have no food in the house, and am more depressed than I have ever been in my entire life.  I'm in a constant state of panic, have been sending out applications and resumes, but am so far in the hole financially I will never get out.  I just don't understand how a company can do this to people and live with what they are doing.  I cannot even ...

I Cant Take It Anymore. What Can We Do
Aug 29, 2013

Reading these posts, watching women post about how to work the system to keep their piddly minimum wage/unemployment coming in while MM finds yet another way to screw us over.  It makes me sick to think of what we have become.  The experience we have, the expertise we are still expected to have, and yet we sit here discussing how to keep getting our minimum freakin wage. Do you not all see how WRONG THIS IS?  All we do is complain, or let them beat us down until we quit. How is i ...

Sorry, I Can't Take This Anymore!
Mar 03, 2014

The endless berating of my work and the poverty level wages that go with it are more than I can deal with anymore.  I'd take a job doing most anything to get out of this drudgery.  Unfortunately with years of doing this, it's hard to even get a job at a hamburger joint! ...

OOW So Often Anymore
Jun 19, 2015

I sometimes watch the boards and see number of people discontent with Nuance and looking for something else .  In the back of my mind is "maybe they leave and I will get more work." Feel bad having this attitude, but ... WHen this grid started out I was making significantly more than I had been.  Now of course the OOW situation has put a stop to that.  I also think QA has gotten a little more aggressive towards us.  We are turning on each other like a pack of wolves.  ...

How Do You Search Anything On Here Anymore?
Oct 21, 2009

How do you search anything on here anymore?  If I want to check past posts on a particular company, etc.?  Did they do away with that?  If so I don't think that was a great idea.  I like to be able to look up info here by doing searchs of old posts first to see if my questions were already answered.  I don't want to waste someones time if they just answered the same question last week, etc. Can I still do a search and if so how? Thanks! ...

No $ To Be Made As An MT Anymore
Sep 03, 2010

Just thinking out load, so please bear with me.  I took the summer off to evaluate how I feel about restarting back to work into the MT field.  I have many bitter-sweet feelings.  Over 24 years ago I started in the MT industry and have done this working out of my home.  I have raised my kids basically alone working a job that I absolutely thrived and loved doing.  Now, it doesn't even pay us minimum wage for our Years of knowlege and skill sets we ha ...

MT Just Is Not For Me Anymore, Vent
Jun 17, 2011

Low pay, poor benefits, expected to work your fingers to the bone every day for pennies while the supervisors take several days off a month, inconsistent QA. Plus, the fact that I am a very shy, introverted person and need to be around other people at a job outside the house. I will never be able to support myself on an MT salary. I am getting out of this business. It's sucking the life out of me. ...

This doctor is absolutely disgusting.  I have umpteen jobs for him and he is constantly coughing and snorting up his snot.  I can't take it any more.  It is so gross.  He sounds like a snorting PIG.  On top of that, he's constantly forcefully flipping through the pages of the chart and it must be right near the microphone because it feels like it's going to break my eardrums.  All I can do is keep calling him nasty names...he's such an idiot, jer ...

You Know What, I Don't Care Anymore
May 31, 2011

I started in this profession back in the late 70s, learning "in house, on the job," my first job working from home, was when my kids were approximately 9 and 11 and obviously, not infants.  My mother was dying at that time, and I answered a local ad in the paper to pick up tapes in 1997 and transcribe for 5 cents a line.  Fast forward to the early 90s, we now have the "Lady Madonna Syndrome" -- meaning, I want to stay at home with my six or more children, home school and be SUPER mamma ...

Is MT Even Worth It Anymore????
Jan 06, 2012

I guess I just need to vent/rant for a minute.  I have been an MT for over three years now.  I seem to be one of the few who prefers VR over ST.  I worked for Spheris before MQ gobbled them up, and I thought they were a great co. to work for.  They paid 5 cpl for VR, which is pretty good if you can edit 300-400 lph.  Then came the Q, and it was okay for a while, but then the Spheris accts. were offshored and there went the Cornerstone accts., and Cornerstone was a great ...

I'm Mad As Hell And I'm Not Going To Take It Anymore
Feb 29, 2012

Having a really bad day.  Waiting to hear back on a job interview.  Thought I would have heard by now.  Don't feel like I can take one more day here.  Tried to log onto the "Ask You-Know-Who" thing. Gave me some excuse about why it didn't work. Anybody know how to e-mail him directly? I have nothing to lose at this point. Don't think I will reallly be losing anything in benefits.  I may as well not have them now for all the good they do. Can't go to ...

I Can Say This Now Because I Don't Work Here Anymore.
Aug 12, 2013

to know........  I questioned my TSM about those figures at the end of your time cards, the  QA percentage?  Mine kept going up and down in HUGE margins week after week.  From 1% clear up to 18%, then down to 11%, back up to 25% and on and on and on.  So.....I confronted her about it.  THIS is what she told me...."I am a stickler for figures and your previous TSM didn't keep a lot.  This will change in the upcoming weeks as soon as I get a handle on them.& ...

Cannot Hack This Anymore
May 17, 2014

I just cannot hack this job anymore. I am seriously considering just giving my notice effective immediately. I'm tired of these mush mouthed, rude, inconsiderate, etc ad nauseum. I'm tired of getting nitpicked over stupid crap like punctuation or hypens or semi colons. Do I have something to fall back on? No. Would I end up on the street? Most probably. But a weight would be off my shoulders and I would not have to dread clocking in. I would not have to dread looking a vandymu ...

If Only I Didn't Have To Do This Anymore
Nov 21, 2014

It's just all I can do to sit here and type these boring reports.  Been doing it for 33 years so please, no comments about how I should have investigated it before I got into it.  I loved it when it was inhouse.  Been home now since 1999 and I'm just so freaking bored.  Stop every 5 minutes just to surf the internet or check my email.  I cannot keep my mind on this mind-numbing job. I'm about to start a coding class, but I'm not terribly optimistic t ...

Don't Care Anymore
Apr 09, 2015

If your quality metrics expectations weren't set so humanly-impossible-to-achieve high and you weren't so nit-picky about simple, insignificant errors then maybe we wouldn't have so many accounts on the "consecutive audit failure" list.  And what else do you expect when you throw people into accounts they know nothing about and still expect them to perform at 100%, 100% of the time, while still making lph and keep within the limits of your stupid inactive time and all for pen ...

So Glad I Don't Work For MQ Anymore
Mar 20, 2010

I've been sitting here reading all the garbage about MQ and their "yET ONE MORE" great idea  HA.  I can't believe it....well, yes, I can.  They have come up with yet one more terrible idea (that won't last) and a way to "cheat" the transcriptionist/editor out of more money!!!!!!  "Right the first time" and docking 3 cpl if you send too many reports to QA....GOOD GRIEF!  I feel another class action suit about to be filed.  LOL LOL  Anyway, I ...

Does Anyone Know If MQ Does A 401K Match Anymore?
