MT just is not for me anymore, vent - me

Posted: Jun 17, 2011

Low pay, poor benefits, expected to work your fingers to the bone every day for pennies while the supervisors take several days off a month, inconsistent QA. Plus, the fact that I am a very shy, introverted person and need to be around other people at a job outside the house.

I will never be able to support myself on an MT salary. I am getting out of this business. It's sucking the life out of me.

Me too! - sm

I am a shy person to begin with, but now that I have been an MT working from home for 10 years, wow. I feel socially delayed and awkward now. Sad really. I have not had health insurance for 6 months because I cannot meet my line count (mostly due to lack of work) and I really need to go to the doc for a pain in my stomach but cannot afford it. I probably have an ulcer from this job. Why am I doing this to myself? It's almost like self-inflicted pain staying in this career.

I know what you mean - me

At my last job, I didn't qualify for helath insurance, which I so desperately need. Voice recognition is a joke. I had low work for 5 or 6 months. The work finally started coming in and I typed my BUTT off for a 2-week period and still didn't make anywhere near my line count for health insurance. I knew then that I can't continue doing MT.

I deserve a "normal" job where there is always work, and you don't have to worry about making a line count for health insurance, or not having enough work to buy groceries or pay your mortgage.

I want to be financially comfortable, and that will never happen in MT. Even if I did find a job that always had work and had good benefits, I need social interaction. And MT is too taxing on the body for too little pay.

This would be a good time to sign up for - classes for next quarter. NM

I'm in the same boat but not sure what to do. sm - hard-working MT

I, too, work a lot. It's so easy to be a slave to this job because you need the money and will work whatever it takes to barely get by. I don't think MT will ever be a career that anyone can support their family on (or even a single person for that matter).

For so long I've felt that this job dictates my life. I don't like feeling that it controls me. I work when the work is there or someone else will get it.

Just applied to local hospital... - anon4

...for the first time, no work at start of my shift, a first for me on second shift, and it's the beginning of the pay period. Now I know what the day-shifters are going through. I was told to flex, meaning I have to possibly make up the time on a night off, Monday night (there probably won't be any work tomorrow night). Clever of them, and I believe they know exactly what they're doing. Have us all sit at our PCs 24/7 just to make up a paycheck and/or use up our PTO if we have it. Been at this company two years, started off with mandatory OT (really hated that)and now it's down to this. Always thought working second shift would guarantee me plenty enough work. So here I sit on a Saturday night wanting to work and can't. We get no sensible explanations for this weird shift of tons of work/no work.

Anyway, I figured it wouldn't hurt to apply to a few jobs I saw on line for some second shift positions at the local hospital and can hope for an interview. It's maybe a positive beginning step out, anyway. I love transcribing, been at it 35 years (home for the last 15). I'm spoiled and hate leaving my cozy house at night but would love an hourly paycheck again.

This line of work can't support me anymore, either! - Time to GO

[ In Reply To ..]
I have been an MT for 20 years, home for that entire time. For about 5 years now, it's been a struggle for sure. I hate the work, the hours (7 days a week, 15 hours most days) - like it was said by someone here- you get the work when you can or someone else will.

I want out, but where do you go at 50 when this is all you have done? Why we do suffer, hurt our backs, gain weight, stress, etc, for the MTSO - and get paid less and less? Seems to me that 99% of them lie about work that is there, too. I want a NORMAL 9-5 JOB. Knowing what my check will be every 2 weeks.. no feast/famine with work.. this is unhealthy and, at my age, not worth it anymore - i gotta jump ship and soon!!! this line of work is NOT worth it!!!!
Good luck everyone....

feeling lucky - was jumping ship

[ In Reply To ..]
Have been ready to try something new because working 3 jobs is and earning half of my former paycheck is not cutting it. Then a former employer finally came through with some part time IC work that is just overflow and vacation coverage right now although there is plenty of it, but probably will work into full time sooner than later since the current in house MTs are 65 and 85. So there are good jobs out there, but they are sporadic, glad I didn't jump ship too soon this time.

Looking at this thread, it seems to me that it might be a good idea for all of us, as we decide to leave the field because we can no longer earn a decent living, to send out resumes to ALL of the local hospitals and clinics within our travel zones. As an Ex-Traveler, who MT'd all over the country for several years, I can tell you that the reason that a lot of hospitals are contracting the work out (and extremely disatisfied with what they get back) is because of the problems they are facing in finding qualified seasoned MTs. Of course, you may get no response, and should continue forward with alternatives but on the other hand, you might be pleasantly surprised! All it is going to cost you really is the time to write a thoughtful cover letter, a resume if you don't already have one, and some postage stamps.

I receive E-mails daily, notifying me what hospitals in the U.S. are seeking transcriptionists. One hospital's high-end hourly wage was over $18 an hour. True...not all hospitals "want" to eliminate their transcription departments; sometimes departments are closed out of necessity. What promotes accuracy of transcription and productivity is the MT transcribing the same account/doctors daily, weekly, monthly, yearly. I think a flaw with some MTSOs is the "all that matters is getting the work done" mentality minus the thoughtfulness of distributing/managing the workflow in a manner that promotes accuracy and productivity.

I Can't Take It Anymore!!
Jan 18, 2010

I have had 6 (SIX!) reports come through, all having the same mush-mouthed, fast talking, whispering, ESL doctor.  Oh, and the sing-song thing is really about to make me blow my stack. I swear, he is so bad that I can't even understand the patient's name!!!! I am going to pull my hair out.  Yep, I feel it coming.  It takes me forever just to get through ONE of his reports.  He gets so many blanks that I honestly feel sorry for the QA person that end ...

Not An MT Anymore!!
Apr 25, 2011

Working at .075 cpl for ScribeRight I made a whopping 12K in 2009. Wow - let's all run out and take MT classes to jump on that bandwagon.  Anyway, I quit my MTSO pimp and went to work for a well-known Italian restaurant chain in 2010. I work in the kitchen 6 hours a day for 5 days a week (Mon-Fri lunch shift with no nighttime or weekend shifts) and make about 15% more than I did as an MT. I am not an IC anymore but rather an employee, so I saved a bunch on my social ...

I Just Don't Know Anymore
Feb 27, 2012

My bubble has been burst.  I was with eTransPlus when the Q swallowed them up and then I left.  Now, I'm with another MTSO and it's awful.  I've only been MTing for 5 years.  I was an office nurse (LPN) for 13 years before that and I wanted a change.  My first job was with a great company and then the huge acct I was on was bought out by an MTSO, so I had the choice of being laid off or going to IC status.  I chose to be laid off thinking I could draw ...

I Can't Do This Anymore
Aug 01, 2013

I just cannot do this anymore with MMmodal.  I cannot sit here for 14 hours a day for 800 lines.  I am completely broke, have no food in the house, and am more depressed than I have ever been in my entire life.  I'm in a constant state of panic, have been sending out applications and resumes, but am so far in the hole financially I will never get out.  I just don't understand how a company can do this to people and live with what they are doing.  I cannot even ...

I Cant Take It Anymore. What Can We Do
Aug 29, 2013

Reading these posts, watching women post about how to work the system to keep their piddly minimum wage/unemployment coming in while MM finds yet another way to screw us over.  It makes me sick to think of what we have become.  The experience we have, the expertise we are still expected to have, and yet we sit here discussing how to keep getting our minimum freakin wage. Do you not all see how WRONG THIS IS?  All we do is complain, or let them beat us down until we quit. How is i ...

Sorry, I Can't Take This Anymore!
Mar 03, 2014

The endless berating of my work and the poverty level wages that go with it are more than I can deal with anymore.  I'd take a job doing most anything to get out of this drudgery.  Unfortunately with years of doing this, it's hard to even get a job at a hamburger joint! ...

OOW So Often Anymore
Jun 19, 2015

I sometimes watch the boards and see number of people discontent with Nuance and looking for something else .  In the back of my mind is "maybe they leave and I will get more work." Feel bad having this attitude, but ... WHen this grid started out I was making significantly more than I had been.  Now of course the OOW situation has put a stop to that.  I also think QA has gotten a little more aggressive towards us.  We are turning on each other like a pack of wolves.  ...

Have To Vent About A PA
Oct 19, 2009

I have an ARNP doing a radiation follow up.  She dictates "33 fractions of 5040 GRAY" and then goes on to say "that's small c, capital G, small y."  She has done this a number of times over a number of reports.  I'm just shaking my head.   ...

VR Vent!!
Oct 20, 2009

I just spent the last few hours pretty much completely re-typing garbage VR!  I am so sick of this!  Especially after we just got our rate cut significantly.  Why can't they provide a good VR platform??!! I just worked my butt off for nothing! ...

Just A Vent....
Dec 07, 2009

Someone ought to take these ESL doctors and torture them like they torture us with their unbelievably horrible English speaking skills! We should not be told we're jeopardizing patient care - it's the ESL doctors.  I've never had an ESL doctor and I'd refuse to be treated by one who can't speak clearly or speak a complete sentence. Jerks! ...

I Have To Vent (even Though There's Nothing To Be Done) Sm
Jan 07, 2010

I've been doing this a long time, and I know how oblivious doctors are to anything approaching being polite when they dictate.  I've heard them in the bathroom, I've heard them yelling at their kids, talking on the phone, listening to football games on TV while dictating, etc.  We all have.  But there's this one foreign female doctor on the account I regularly transcribe who drives me UP the wall.  She apparently thinks dictation time is time to eat.  ...

Just Want To Vent
Mar 07, 2010

I hate being on QA hold.  I just started a new job and no matter where I've worked through the years, QA always seem to be the same!  It's never consistent.  I'm marked off for one thing by one QA and then not for the same thing by another!  Am I supposed to do that or not? I'm trying to learn this account and being 2 different things on one subject is confusing to say the least! ...

Just A Vent For ASR
Jul 17, 2010

Wow, if E-scription is such a wonderful ASR platform, I feel sorry for us all becuase I have had to change at least 1-2 words per line on E-scription today, WHENEVER I actually had work, that is.  This whole thing is getting worse and worse all the time, and for such horrible cpl rates that I can't even stand this after 36 years.  If the doctors and all the big muckity mucks had even the SLIGHTEST clue.  Gladly change places for one report with them.  Thanks I needed t ...

ESL Vent
Nov 01, 2010

Ugh, I am getting so frustrated with this ESL doc.  He says these doctors' names and I cannot understand him and I don't even know if he's pronouncing them correctly.  I search through all the doctors' names that start with the letter that it sounds like he saying to try to find one that might match how he is pronouncing it.  It's taking so much time.  If I find a name that comes close enough to what he is saying, I will use that.  Other times I ...

Just An ESL Vent
Nov 06, 2010

Just need to vent and complain a little about the annoying way this ESL dictates...it's really getting on my nerves.   He constantly says things like: Heart sounds "is" regular.  Medications "is" reviewed.  Lungs "is" clear.  Always combining plurals with singulars.  Then there's the: There is "a" pitting edema...  And no, he's not saying "ah", it is clearly an "a."  There is "a" mitral regurgitation...  Finally, I can tell he's re ...

Can I Please Vent About This
Apr 18, 2011

We have a supervisor.. just one.  She can also type at home if she chooses to once she gets home from the office.  Of course she does because she makes a lot more money.  I probably would too.  But, here's my peeve..... We can't cherry pick.. of course not. No sending jobs back that are from some of the worst dictators in the world. We just trod through and type and get those horrible lines per hour on those horrible docs . But she assigns all the best dictator ...

Need To Vent.
Aug 18, 2011

I am trying so hard at this new job.  I've been there a month, and I've never seen such complicated visit choices, etc.  It's just very difficult for me for some reason.  I have pages and pages of good notes, but I'm always missing something.  So far, no one has been ugly with me, but I'm feeling it's only a matter of time.  I'm an experienced MT of over 12 years and am very good, but I'm just about to cry because of these header p ...

CAN I VENT HERE???
Sep 08, 2011

I've switched jobs about 4 times this year, searching for the "perfect fit" - even went down to 7 cpl as an IC which everyone on these boards has said NEVER to do, just so I could have no weekends and flexibility during the day.  Just when I thought I found a great company, they changed their platform to Emdat/Inscribe.  Oh, ah, so much fun - NOT!!!  And so much for that 7 cpl.  We'll be getting 2 cpl on the QT lines  :(  I am soooo unhappy.  To make ...

Have To Vent.
Oct 15, 2011

This dictator is driving me nuts!!! Even the sound of every deep, gravelly, congested-sounding breath the man takes makes my head and ears hurt.  Sounds like he's dictating with his mouth full of spit or some kind of gunk. Ewwwww gross!  Plus he's ESL.  Plus it's an account I've never done before.  Plus it's sounds like he's dictating under water, and he keeps repeating what seems like every other phrase.  I'm already irritable, grouchy ...

Need To Vent!
Feb 10, 2012

I absolutely hate the account I type for....hate it.  Is it really THAT difficult to want most of the physicians dictate correctly?  I said 'most' too because I do know that to expect all of them to dictate correctly is ridiculous.  I can't even average 10 reports an hour on this account because of the errors.  They mumble, slur their words, clip their words, rustle every paper around them... and I'm taliking about 80% of them!  This is a new account ...

Just Another Vent
May 09, 2012

I have a full-time position which I honestly can say I love.  However, all things being what they are in this field, I always try to keep my eggs in least 2 baskets "just in case." I accepted an IC position for a little "mad money" a couple of weeks ago from a company with a pretty decent reputation, "IC" being the operative phrase here. The TL to whom I have been assigned is driving me batty.  She is constantly wanting to call me with things that could very well be addressed via oth ...

Got To Vent!
Oct 15, 2012

Just got a new account a couple of weeks ago and was super excited because its brand new,  straight transcription until VR picks it up.......good deal?  Not so much.  It seems the QCs are all on a different page.  I have sent the 3 "Super" QCs all the same question and got different answers.  Sent it to my lead and she told me to ask the "Super" QCs. (I just love that term and wonder if they put sticky stars on a matrix on their refrigerators every time they flush an MT ...

I am SICK and TIRED of new MTs in this field who say that all is rosy in the MT world.  Oh, what bright horizons and exciting times for us here!!! Oh how wonderful for those who roll with the punches because technology is gee whiz wonderful.  The stockholders are promised less labor in the future. Well isn't that great, that doesn't affect ME.  That means we are looking forward to bright ...

May I Please Just Vent?
Jan 30, 2013

Why oh why can't these companies have just a speck of honesty when they hire us?  I was recently hired by a company and was hired for "fulltime" and I get at the most 600 lines daily.  I actually love the job and would probably work it part-time, if asked, but why deceive me into thinking they had full-time lines available?  I see MTs who are actually looking for part-time and most companies say "We are sorry, but we are only hiring full-time."   I am beginning to belie ...

Sorry, But I Need To Vent.
Oct 29, 2014

It's such a nice holiday gift they're giving us.  We all know that anytime you throw a new account or dictator in the mix it drops our LPH.  Because of this it will also be dropping our PTO, which is based on our LPH/cpl.  Also, I'm sure we'll see the dreaded "no jobs available" coming our way because everything has been pooled out to the masses to keep a 4-hour TAT instead of the usual 16 to 24 with our exclusives.  Plus, don't forget, as promised, V ...
