Working every Sunday for the rest of my career - Annie Oakley

Posted: Apr 18, 2012

We are required to work a full-time schedule that includes either Saturday or Sunday, every weekend, forever. The only time we can take a full weekend is if we take a PTO day. But the problem is that we don't get paid holidays anymore (unless we work), so we are almost forced to take many of those as PTO days.  Our sick days come out of our PTO days.  I guess what I am saying is that the thought of having hardly any full weekends "forever" is very disheartening.  The company I used to be with, who was bought out, let us work 1/2 day Sat and 1/2 day Sunday, every other weekend.  This was so much better and we could spend some weekends with our familys.  I am thankful I have a job in this economy, but working every Sunday is very depressing to me.

try working every day with none off ever!!! - slave to MT

At least you get a day off. The only way I ever get a day off is if I am so sick that I literally can not get out of bed and then when I am better, all the work I would have gotten when I was out is given to me in one day whether it is one day or a full week!!

I have worked every other weekened or either Tues - Saturday for the past 15yrs.

Always worked in the healthcare field, first as a nurse requiring every other weekend and then as a transcriptionist in a hospital requiring either Tues-Sat or Sun-Thurs.

It is the norm.

Same here...going on 11 years now, almost all the holidays too. - Hayseed

It's just the nature of the beast, I'm afraid. I could leave and go back to a doctor's office as a medical secretary, but I still vividly remember when I was cowering in a staff bathroom after a nutter came barging in looking for needles to shoot up with--clean or used, and then all the angry patient's who took out their billing/insurance frustrations out on me, some even threatening bodily harm...

So, I'll keep on keeping on because frankly working with actual humans scares the crap out of me these days.
:-D

Sundays - Me again

I personally don't think Sun-Thurs is a bad schedule. I've done it for years and like having a weekday for errands and doctor appointments. I can't see how a half day Saturday and a half day Sunday would be better, that does tie up your entire weekend, impossible to go anywhere. My first 3 days of sick leave come out of my PTO account, I don't work for an MTSO. Give your schedule a try before you decide that you are going to "hate" it, you might like it better than you think.

I've worked Sunday through Thursday most of my 25 years; however, I used to have understanding bosses who allowed the occasional flex hours for a holiday (i.e., on Thanksgiving as long as I got my 8 hours in it was fine) and if my child was sick when I was a single mom (this was when I was inhouse) I wasn't threatened. If you read my thread at MModal while I have been threatened, it was at the smaller MTSO and she would punish you if you took day off by sending 20-50% of your workload for 1-2 weeks (not just me several of us finally met and were floored as all of us thought it was just US personally!).

At any rate if you work acute care it is 24/7/365 PERIOD. I knew that going in, just like nurses and other hospital staff there are no "weekends." If you want to do weekends off just try finding clinic only transcription (which I did for about 5 years and was bored out of my mind LOL).

Me too. Always acute care, always 24/7/365. I chose - Sundays to free someone else up for church. NM

Why Do All The Companies Have You Working Every Weekend Either Saturday Or Sunday?

Help On A Sunday!
Nov 24, 2013

Who are we supposed to contact when we need technical help on a Sunday?  There used to be a number to call but I don't have it anymore, which is my fault, I know.  Fluency won't let me in, saying my new password is not recognized, yet it let me into Teamwork.   Man o' man - it's always something, as Gilda Radner used to say. ...

Foot Rest
Jun 10, 2011

A while back I saw a post on here where an MT was advertising a foot rest that her husband was making that enabled transcriptionists to elevate their legs while still using the foot pedal.  I believe it was taken down before I got the info.  Does anybody know where I can get in touch with her?  Thanks. ...

MedScribe No Different From The Rest
May 15, 2012

I thought I had a great job transcribing for a specialty clinic in Chicago, but lost it to speech wreck.  MedScribe lied and told us it was a computer upgrade for Chicago, but now I'm left here with no work because it all went to speech wreck.  I would have changed over to another account but I was sucked in and believed about the upgrade.  Now I have no work.  Anybody else?, because I have an attorney and he would like to hear from all of us.  This industry is ...

A QC Question For The Rest Of You
Dec 18, 2014

For simplicity's sake, let's say I get a postaudit and it's 90%. Is my QC for the week 90%, or is it the one 90% audit averaged with my other work? OR, if there were 2 post audits, one being 100% and one being 90%, is it 95%? This is something I never got a clear answer on. I'm not sure they know lol. ...

My scheduled day/shift to work and NJA.  Finding I am unable to make up these hours later in the week.  It's not a wonderful life at all.  Can't sleep at night wondering where the money for bills, etc., will come from, wondering who is next for termination. Escription Versus The Rest Of Us
Nov 18, 2009

There's obviously an apples and oranges difference between Escription and the rest of the VR editing softwares out there.  Those who are on Escription - bless your hearts - you are very fortunate.  But if you haven't done VR on another platform, please stop trying to tell the rest of us we are obviously doing something wrong if we can't easily double our lines with VR.  It just isn't happening for most of us.  I have worked in transcription for 30 years - ...

Do The Rest Of You Find, Being Paid Only Per Line,
Nov 06, 2009

Another poster stated they only get paid when they type (just like the rest of us).  Since going from per-hour to per line wages, I've been finding it nearly impossible to take any kind of a break whatsoever, whether it be a day off, or an hour break.  I make so little at this, that all I can think of while doing anything other than typing, is how much money am I losing.  Do you, too, start feeling guilty about unchaining yourselves from your desk for even the short ...
