Tired of this - Lookingtochange

Posted: Aug 16, 2014

I've been feeling the desire to hang up transcription for good..tired of the nitpicking..the no raise in pay..the feeling of being anonymous..etc...put application in at the hospital.  Yes, I have loved being at home for a really long time now but getting to where I just hate this. Is there life after transcription?  Suggestions appreciated!

Not a suggestion, but yes, - there is life after MT

I got a job as a secretary in a hospital, studied coding, and moved to HIM as a coder. I even moved up after that, and there are many jobs related to coding, but not strictly coding, that can do with what I know now. Everything pays better, too.

It can be hard to see other options when you work at home for a one-trick-pony MTSO. You don't see or even hear about the jobs in other HIM areas like informatics and coding.

So, yes, there is life after MT. A lot of it pays better, too.

My plan - sm

Although the 2 large hospitals in my area just recently laid off most of their unit secretaries, there are coding jobs available. I'm going to begin volunteering at the hospital while taking a coding course and continuing FT with MT. Hopefully, this will give me a leg-up when I finish and become certified.

That sounds like a good plan, especially - if you try to volunteer in HIM

I worked as a regular secretary, not a unit secretary.

Volunteering at the hospital may only work if you do it in HIM. Another option is to look for a job in HIM. With what folks here report they are making in MT, even low-level HIM jobs might pay more.

Also keep in mind that hospitals are not the only place for coders. They actually employ far fewer coders than outpatient facilities and offices. If you restrict your search to hospitals, you may end up unemployed. It would be better to take any job you can find to get the experience you need.

Some thoughts on HIM - An American Girl

I agree, try to volunteer in HIM, it may work into paid employment. I suppose it depends on who you ask, but I found coding difficult to break into. I studied coding when I was working full-time as an MT, then got sidelined with a broken leg. I finished the program but after numerous interviews for coding jobs without getting one, I settled for an HIM job. I'm 60 years old and too tired to get fired up about a new career, but I digress. Even if you volunteer in another department, introduce yourself to the HIM manager and tell them that you are studying coding. They may let you practice coding some cases. You might be able to shadow one of the coders and obtain a mentor. The hospital may have a coding internship. Anyway, volunteering is a great way to get to know a facility and its people, make contacts and apply for internal positions when they become open. Some HIM salaries are not that bad depending on your job title. I took a pay cut from on-site MT but not that bad and I'm working my way back up. Of course, coders make more, so if that's what you want to do, I would definitely pursue that.

When I left my former MTSO and got a job at - an imaging clinic, I found - sm

it was actually energizing to be working outside of my house. It was a little difficult at first to transition from getting up at 11:30 a.m. to getting up at 5:50 a.m., but I started gradually, a week ahead of time, setting my alarm 1/2 hour earlier each day, then getting up early even before the job started.

Even though I was away from home for 9+ hours a day, I actually accomplished so much more in terms of errands and such than I did working from home, because my energy level increased. Working at home, I was just zoning out and staring off into space much of the time out of sheer boredom. (Or else browsing eBay and Etsy.)

My commute was brutal. For training, it was 3 hours on the road each day. After that my permanent office was closer, only 1-1/2 hours each way. Unfortunately it wasn't 1-1/2 hours of 70 mph freeway speeds, but just crawling along in bumper-to-bumper traffic. STILL, I came to enjoy that time spent in the car. I ate breakfast in the car. Whenever traffic came to a standstill, I could drink my coffee without spilling it, or put polish on a couple of fingernails. I rearranged my shopping habits so that I went to markets along my route, which I'd do on the way home.

Best of all was the pay. It was reliable, it was on-time, and it was enough to live on plus have a savings account again. Whenever I started to feel frustrated sitting in traffic, I'd just remind myself about how much easier it was to live when I received a REAL paycheck, for a change!

Yes there is, 2yrs after being outsourced I felt forced to - move on. See msg

I felt like I was drowning financially, eventually became depressed and started feeling hopeless. I didn't mind working from home when I was making a decent living and paid by the hour, but once outsourced I felt like I was at the very bottom and wasn't actually living, just surviving.

After many years at home working for the hospital and the last couple for an MTSO, I threw in the towel. The first week was a breath of fresh air for me. I also work for a clinic as a medical assistant and it's nice to know I have a reliable paycheck again. I don't miss working from home not one bit even though my job gets stressful at times with cattiness.

There are options out there and it doesn't have to be medical related, just something you don't mind doing that's reliable and pays the bills.

Not the OP but - many thanks

I too really like the replies to this email, gives me hope, I need to get out of the house so bad, even though it scares me. I was checking out how to become a dispatcher for our local wildlife agency, anyone ever done any dispatching work before?

Not me, but sounds interesting. - Something to explore, nm

Almost everything I read on this board expresses a common thread of disgust with the Q.  If you really hate that the work is going to India, if you really hate that MedQuist is a greedy heartless monster, and if you really despise what is happening to our medical records because of this company, why keep helping it out by staying and helping them make more money by paying slave wages?  I see these words and phrases:  unethical, greedy, corrupt, lower and lower wages, wor ...

Are We Tired Enough Of ISR?
Jun 26, 2012

Are you as tired as I am of making dumb little corrections in the ISR system? This morning, I am spending all my time “uncapitalizing” regular words in the middle of sentences. Where does it come up with the underline in the middle of laboratory values (1._4). It adds a colon after dates and this morning the abbreviation, MD, is after some of the headings. There are no paragraphs. I delete numbers in a list because they are never right and it is easier than going back and changing the ...

So Very, Very Tired Of This
Apr 08, 2013

I do not like working this late.  But, this is generally when the work is available and I understand that it is my best chance of getting work.  Not very many people on my account on a Monday night.  I see 23 reports, op notes, that are easy lines, require an insert, and right when I am about to begin to be able to download them, all of them are gone.  This happens all the freakin time.  Somebody had to pull and assign them for them to disappear in a chunk like that.&nbs ...

It is getting very hard to even find the energy to test anymore. I have tested till I am blue in the face and dont understand why it is so hard to get a job in this profession. I did not think it would be this hard to land a good job but wow this really is a hard profession to get started in. Anyone Else Wake Up To NO Work. I'm Getting So Tired Of This.

I am lucky to have maybe made $100 this week and it's almost over. I have begged for more accounts, worked odd hours to try and "steal" some work to no avail. I sit here 16 hours a day practically waiting for a job or two, anything.  I have been applying EVERYWHERE but no jobs. I am so discouraged.  We're slowly sinking but all I hear from who I work for is, "it's just slow right now." Slow doesn't put a roof over my head.  I ask I just needed to vent. What are ...
