New technology came and I lost my work - Dee

Posted: May 27, 2015

After 17 years of working for a local clinic and building relationships and making their work my top priority, the most recent 'upgrade' to their system left me without work or income. They never even contacted me. One day I logged on like normal and didn't find any work on the work list. I waited a couple of hours and checked again - nothing. I contacted the IT guy who just matter-of-factly told me that their newest upgrade over the previous weekend made it impossible for me to receive any work. Has this happened to anyone else? I'm so disappointed, angry and frustrated!

I have been posting here for about 2 years warning of this. - Informaticist

Sorry that this happened to you. I have been posting here for about two years warning that this was coming. Every time I do, people stomp all over me. No one believes me.

This is why I have been urging MTs to retrain, find new careers, and get out of MT before you find yourselves on the street.

Well, I believe you! I just can't believe how badly they are treating me. Initially it looked like it would be fixed. My doctors were pretty upset about this but nothing has changed. It's going on 4 weeks now and I have little to no hope that it will come back. However, I'm lucky in that my husband is making decent money and I have a job interview tomorrow - NOT in transcription! I'm hopeful for a new start!

to keep having this person constantly popping in to say "I told you so! nya nya nya." Doesn't this occupation have it's own message board where everyone can be smug and superior?

seeking offense where none is offered or intended. Others just reflexively strike out at anything that challenges their belief systems and claim to be insulted or "disrespected." They're probably hoping that by doing so and by claiming that it's "all lies" (even in the face of overwhelming evidence) they can make it all go away or not be true.

Calling facts you don't like and the people who dare to utter them "annoying" won't make them any less true.

Without us VR is worthless. We are valuable and deserve to be respected for our knowledge, talent, and experience and compensated fairly for this. The powers that be will succeed in cheating us of our ability to provide for families and our dignity, if we allow it. Any suggestions? I am going back to school and getting out of it altogether after 23 years. I see no other way.

So sorry this happened to you - anon

That is rotten that they did not have the courtesy to communicate with you at all.

I have never had that happen to me, but I've logged on to find out that my favorite account that I worked on was lost without any warning to me (more than once). It stinks.

My best wishes to you for the future.

Thanks very much! - Dee

I appreciate it :) It came as quite a shock. It felt like I got dumped! I'm working on getting past it and will hopefully have a good interview tomorrow.

So sorry you were treated so shabbily. Knock that interview out of the ballpark. MTs have such great skills, work ethic, etc.

This is the second time this has happened to me. I was a typesetter some 30 years ago (I started way young), one of the first jobs to use computers but before personal PCs. Highly skilled, good pay but hard work, nights, weekends, holidays, etc. Designed and created everything -- newspapers, magazines, books, billboards. And you actually had to do long data string programming to change fonts, bold, italic, draw lines and boxes. I knew personal PCs would end it and they did, literally overnight. Show up for work and the office was closed. I warned owners, everyone, and nobody believed me. Unsurprisingly, typesetting as an art is practically dead. As perhaps the kind of transcription we used to do may be. But, surprisingly, there are still people who care about seriously well-designed type and are willing to pay for it. Transcription will probably end up the same way. Diehard MTs who still love the job and the life, and the providers who value the pampering, personal contact, attention to detail and trustworthy copy will find each other. The typesetting profession was gone within about a year of the introduction of PCs. I feared transcription would be gone overnight starting like 10 years ago...so far, amazingly, not yet...Maybe we need to see it from the value-added perspective...find the docs who care about protecting their data and miss working with real people. I think transcription originally thrived because docs are good, overworked people who enjoy human contact and appreciate having their workload lightened. They know we're here. They still say hello, goodbye, thank you and "Transcriptionist, could you please..." We hear their voices every day, they have had zero feedback from us for years, and they still talk to us. I wonder what would happen if we started just visiting offices and hospitals and opening a dialogue. The electronic revolution keeps isolating people more and more from each other...I believe people are already beginning to be starved for personal service. If nothing else, older docs might love to return to the days of that. I for one am going to make the experiment. And in the meantime, having checked out the job market, I'm a lot less unhappy about what I'm currently making. Thanks for indulging my rant -- best to everyone.

type/edit for the same docs over a long period of time, you do feel a strange connection to them even though they have no idea who you are. You recognize their voice, know some of their quirks when the speak, get irritated that they just burped in your ear after eating their sandwich. When you care about your job I think it is normal to feel that punch in the gut, so to speak.

It's ok to grieve the loss for a short bit - but keep it short!

Good luck on the interview!!

imaging center, which I really enjoyed and the pay was excellent. Then they installed new software which made MTs obsolete. At the end of that week, they called us and said we no longer had jobs. Been looking 2 years, but never did find another job. Employers may act like they really need you, and that you're an asset to them, but give them new toys to play with, and they'll dump you in a heartbeat.

Same thing also happened to me after working for - a GI doc since 1986.

I lost 3 accounts within 2 weeks. And the fourth account about a month later, and went to work for an MTSO as an IC. When the MTSO decided to charge us $300 a year to work there (to cover their costs for insurance, etc.), I went back to an office job. Getting out of the industry was the best thing I did. I no longer have to make payments to the IRS and get paid for holidays. And not working every weekend typing is so enjoyable, I had no idea. Good luck to you - sometimes things happen for a reason. And, I cried for a day when I lost my accounts, hugs, my friend.

Thanks for the kind words. This has been a - Dee

Ohhhh, I'm so so sorry for what happened to your job. I just cannot understand how people can live with themselves. Just how much effort does it take to at least inform a person of job status. I often read how an employee goes on vacation and returns to no job. First, had they know, I doubt they would have spent the funds on vacation. People make me sick, in general, on how they treat their fellow humans as well as animals.

Same thing happened to me. I was with the clinic for 11 years and I was given two days notice that I was being replaced by the EMR. Was really a hardship because I was in the middle of buying a house and my income with the clinic was imperative to the transaction. Guess we can all be replaced no matter how hard we work.

It scary how many of you have been affected - Dee

by this. We, too, are in the middle of selling and buying a new home. At least my husband's job is doing well but without my income it will be a challenge. Just had my interview and it seemed like it went well. I won't find out until next week though.

So, I Started Thinking About How They Want To Use The Technology

The people who programmed, designed, whatever, Editscript have added nice little features, like the red box, and the speeding up dictation feature when the dictator says nothing.  So, I started thinking about the red box and other features.  I decided I would not check the box that slows down the silent parts of the dictation.  Well, guess what? It sped me up editing-wise like crazy and I can hear when the dictation blips and, if need be, I can rewind for a couple of seconds and c ...
