Anyone went back to school to be a nurse or rad tech? - MT to ?

Posted: Dec 11, 2009

I need to find a real job with benefits and insurance so I am thinking about going to school to be a LPN or radiology tech.  Anyone done either of these?  Did you feel like your MT background helped in the courses?  I am 40 so I will have to take all that math and english before I can do anything.  Any advice.....?  Thanks

I worked as a nurse for about 8 years and was TIRED of it and decided to try my luck at being an MT. I find that now, I make more as an MT than I would as a nurse, but as things get worse I may have to go back into nursing, but I sure hope not! Good luck to you.

I have been told nurses make very good money - $25 to $30 an hour for RNs. I know LPNs make less though. I can see though how you could get burned out on it. My mom was a nurse at one time. She would get very stressed at times.

Not worth it to me though. I make more at home, AND I don't have the stress of it.

Well, I can understand what you are saying, like I said my mom was a nurse, heard lots of stories from her. She had to put up with not only the patient issues but arrogant, grouchy doctors as well. She was brought to tears quite a few times by a hateful physician - they often like to blame the nurses for things. She was a good nurse though. I myself, could never be a nurse because I am not a "people person" but as of yet I don't make the money nurses do but I am happy here at home.

I was an RN first, as well. Sure hope I never have to do that again. Long, long story. I know the money seems appealing to some, but there are other aspects of nursing that are much more difficult to tolerate than those of an MT, IMHO. For one, you are not responsible for direct patient care as an MT. You do not experience what it is like to need to be taking care of more than one patient at a time, and not humanly able to give each one the best care that they deserve. Hospitals like to keep the staffing to a minimum. Of course, there are other places that an RN can work other than a hospital. Where I live, it's difficult to find a doctor who will hire an RN over an LPN. I've thought of going back to school to be an LPN just so that I can work in a doctor's office.

I don't know what the OP above made for her nursing work, but I have a contract to start working immediately at a local medical center for $28.45 an hour plus shift differential and bonuses.

I'd say that is a fair wage to start along with benefits.

My mom has been a nurse for years and the best money to be made is at p.r.n. weekend option. Of course if you're going for benefits, this isn't the best option, but the money goes beyond $30/hr.

I have - huh?

I went back to school for nursing just this fall. It will be a bit for me before I am done.

I have a friend who is an LPN. She works 3 days a week and makes easily twice what I make.

Think about it . . . why is the system PUSHING healthcare careers? - MT changing careers

[ In Reply To ..]
I agree that you NEED and SHOULD get out of medical transcription, because it is the responsible thing to do. BUT . . . why into another healthcare career? Think about how saturated the healthcare professions have become in the last few years. The system has been PUSHING unemployed workers to "be nurses," "be rad techs," "be respiratory therapists," etc. Why? You need to ask yourself these questions. I know that I didn't for a long time but then asked myself what I really wanted to do, and when I could answer that question the reality of the entire situation seems a little more clear. Healthcare is making cuts and losing jobs left and right -- ALL aspects, nurses, rad techs -- all of them. The rad tech field is so saturated that I have to wonder if any of them can even find a decent job right now -- and by decent I mean good, full-time, hourly wage. What about the nurses? Think about what an ASN nurse will get you and how many career professionals are actually making MORE money or just as much as an ASN nurse. Many of these healthcare jobs are either getting their hours cut, cut in half, or just being laid off.

I've been typing for 15 years and kind of getting burned out. I've always thought about being a nurse, but wanted to be home with my boys while they were young. I've signed up for two classes starting in the Spring and I'm very excited about it! I'm taking evening classes, so if my kids would happen to be sick, I can be home with them still during the day and not have to miss a class. I'm choosing nursing because I LOVE the medical field and I've worked in the hospitals before and really enjoyed it. I'm not being force to, like the below poster is suggesting.
BTW, I'm 38, so I feel like you are never too old to try something different.
Good luck!

Is 40 Too Old To Go Back To School?
Feb 02, 2010

Being an MT is not paying my bills.  I am thinking about going back to school, but I am 40 and it has been so long since I was in high school.  I have to google to help my son with his 4th grade homework let alone do college math. AND it will be 2 to 4 years before I will get a good job.  I am leaning towards radiology tech, lab tech, or maybe nursing.  Can't  decide just yet but I know that EMR isn't going to be taking those jobs away!!!  Any advice ...

BACK TO SCHOOL
Jul 12, 2010

Like so many others at MQ and everywhere, I went back to school, spent 4 1/2 years and $40 K+.  That was 1 1/2 years ago.  I cannot get a job teaching nor subbing, not even in a clerical capacity.  Student loan has come due and I'm back to struggling here at Q, making hardly enough to pay bills, much less take on the $350 a month student loan payment.  I got a degree in education and in our city there are now problems in the major district, citing crooked administration ...

Going Back To School?

I am almost 51.  I have been in this profession as well as many other aspects from receptionist to office manager. I was doing transcription when it was considered "just typist".  I have taken so many classes, for my own benefit of course, on terminology, anatomy, etc., and of course they were not count toward a degree because hey were all continuing ed courses. I wonder if it stupid for me to go back to school.  Problem is, I could do most managemen ...

Going Back To School
Nov 08, 2011

I was totally inspired by someone who posted yesterday on the "main board" who is 52 years old and based on their loss of income from the transcription field, managed to qualify for a full grant to go back to school.  This person had earned one degree and was working on the next in order to get out of transcription.  I thought, if this person can qualify for a full grant I know I can too since I'm a single mom sometimes not even earning minimum wage with Medquist.  So this morning, I ...

OK, I'm Going Back To School In An Effort To Get Out Of The MT
Mar 26, 2010

tar pits.  I've narrowed my choices to Physical Therapy Assistant, Radiology Tech or leaving healthcare all together and becoming a Paralegal.  I though about nursing school, but in the end ruled it out as my sister has been a nurse for 25 years or so and stopped enjoying her job about 20 years ago.  She says it's all paperwork and covering everyone's behind more than it is taking care of the patient.  Plus she's just not happy in her work. I ruled out la ...

I'm 36 years old.  Yes, still somewhat young.  I need/want to get out of MTing.  My dream is to work in clinical psychology, which requires a master's degree.  I already have an Associate's degree.  So, if I go back to school it would take me about 5 years to reach my dream.  This would make me 42.  When I think of getting my first job in the pyschology field at 42, sometimes I think that would be too old or I would be going up against 20 somethi ...

Back In School With A Question
Aug 08, 2013

I'm going back to school this semester. I took English 1101 and 1102 back in the late 90s, but sadly I don't remember how to write papers in the correct formats. Do you think I should retake these classes? English is my favorite subject, and while I'm glad I took these classes and passed them, I really wouldn't mind taking them again so I can brush up on my paper writing and research paper skills. What do you think? Another option would be not retaking the classes, but having ...

Going Back To School And Getting Certified As A Medical Assistant

I have been in the field of Education for 23 yrs and have been an Administrator for the past 13.
