Embarrasing question about going back to school - LOL

Posted: Feb 03, 2015

I'm going back to school in May to study coding at my local junior college. Some of the classes are online and some are classroom. The last time I attended school we took notes with a pen and notebook.  If I take a pen and nootbook, will I be the only one in class doing so? Do I need to get what they now refer to as a "tablet" even though I'm not sure what one is?

My thoughts .... - sm

I think you should do whatever feels comfortable and works for you. You might, however, consider getting a digital recorder. Then you can listen to the information presented in class again, in addition to studying your notes. Good luck to you. I'm sure you will do well.

Find Out - What is Required

Double check the list of things you are required to have for class. If the tablet or whatever is not on there, then do what's comfortable for you. I agree with a digital recorder and let the instructor and class know you are recording.

As to whether you will "be the only one" with a pen and notebook, I doubt it--a lot of older people attend classes these days. A lot of these credential courses (as opposed to a degree) have a lot of older folks because they don't take as long to complete as a degree program.

Even if you are the only one with a pen and notebook, so what? Knock yourself out!

Find out what is required - Gross generalization

[ In Reply To ..]
I don't know what age you consider to be "older," but I'm 60 and take notes on a tablet, but no class will ever require students to have one. "Older people" are not technologically illiterate. "Older people" also enter graduate school and enroll in 4-year degree programs and do not necessarily take "these credential courses." Thanks for the generalization. You too will be old some day.

I do not think that tablets have progressed enough-sm - anon

that they are efficient for note taking. My guess is that you will likely find a tablet or an e-reader an asset for textbooks but not for note taking. Good luck.

Textbooks are online and cheaper that way - sm

Local college requires lap top or tablet for downloading texts and course work. Check with the college or instructor. Not a stupid question.

That is a very GOOD question. - Coder

A tablet is like a small laptop minus the keyboard. They are lightweight so you can hold them with one hand and read comfortably. When you want to type something, a virtual keyboard appears on screen so you can just tap the letters. IPad and Kindle Fires are examples of tablets, with the iPad being very expensive. Kindles are mostly dedicated e-readers.

I am a coder and have taught coding. I have also tried to use ebooks and hate them. I have several which I carry around on a kindle fire in case I need to look something up, but in my office I use paper. You can use an ebook for non-coding courses, but I do not recommend it for coding. You need those pages so you can flip around and SEE what is there. It is very hard to make good notes in ebooks.

You can get books on Amazon for great prices used, and rent them, if you plan ahead. Colleges love changing things at the last minute, making this difficult.

Your classes will all be on an online course management system, I think. For the in person ones, you will just have classes in addition. Course mgmt systems are a kind of course folder. Each of your courses is there. Each lists all the weeks, all the tests, all the assignments, and has a discussion forum. You do everything there from looking at the syllabus to turning in assignments and taking tests. Lectures may even be recorded there, but a lot of online courses just plop in course material from publishers. (I took coding that way for my RHIA, and it was horrible. Most of the class dropped out by midterm because the materials were so awful and the instructors RHIAs, but had never coded.)

You SHOULD take notes on paper. Studies are showing that only writing by hand facilitates learning. Typing does not. You will NOT be able to do this on a tablet or laptop. Yes, you should get a digital recorder but do not plan to relisten to everything. You won't have time. It is just for insurance.

Ignore what others are doing. You have no idea what kind of student they are. Do not assume they have any edge on you, because they don't. I also advise against getting involved in pointless study groups. Those have been shown to be mostly useless.

If you have questions, even while you are in school, please come to the coding board to ask. We have all been there, you know, and we can help. You may find that your instructors are not very helpful, so we might be able to fill in.

iPad versus Kindle - My opinion

[ In Reply To ..]
Yes iPads are expensive compared to Kindles but my Kindle went in the drawer when I got my iPad, I love it and think it was worth the money. My preference is e-books, mainly because you don't have to carry them around. I know several people who attend school who use tablets to take notes, you need to see what works best for you. I don't know if it's ever been proved that people learn better when they write rather than type. I've never been a note taker because if I am in a hurry and go back later to review sometimes I can't decipher my shorthand or abbreviations. Just find the learning tools that work best for you because not everyone likes the same thing.

One more thing - Old person

[ In Reply To ..]
If a person has an iPad, there are note taking apps available where you can write with a stylus just as if you were using pen and paper. There is also a small tablet called the Samsung note with a built in stylus for note taking, just a couple of other options I forgot to mention before, good luck with your class.

I went back to college to finish what I had started 30 years ago. Surprisingly, the evening classes had a few youngsters, but about half the people were in my age group. I saw a few laptops but no tablets. Everyone still uses the old school method of pen and notebook to take notes.

thank you all for your replies - I appreciate it. nm

Is 40 Too Old To Go Back To School?
Feb 02, 2010

Being an MT is not paying my bills.  I am thinking about going back to school, but I am 40 and it has been so long since I was in high school.  I have to google to help my son with his 4th grade homework let alone do college math. AND it will be 2 to 4 years before I will get a good job.  I am leaning towards radiology tech, lab tech, or maybe nursing.  Can't  decide just yet but I know that EMR isn't going to be taking those jobs away!!!  Any advice ...

How are you adjusting?  Today is my first day and I want to pull my hair out, lol!  I know I need to give myself a chance to adjust, but i'm the type I want to learn quickly so I don't stress over it or feel incompetent.  I'm just rusty I guess, I hope I get into the groove of things, maybe get to the point where I enjoy it.  Just wondering how you all are doing with the school or profession change.  I've been an MT so long I feel like i'm c ...

How do you get a loan to help pay bills while in school?  I'm in the middle of a FAFSA loan for fall semester, but she told me it is for school only.  Someone said they were using part of it to supplement the household income?  What kind of loan would that be?  TIA ...

BACK TO SCHOOL
Jul 12, 2010

Like so many others at MQ and everywhere, I went back to school, spent 4 1/2 years and $40 K+.  That was 1 1/2 years ago.  I cannot get a job teaching nor subbing, not even in a clerical capacity.  Student loan has come due and I'm back to struggling here at Q, making hardly enough to pay bills, much less take on the $350 a month student loan payment.  I got a degree in education and in our city there are now problems in the major district, citing crooked administration ...

Going Back To School?
Apr 20, 2011

I am almost 51.  I have been in this profession as well as many other aspects from receptionist to office manager. I was doing transcription when it was considered "just typist".  I have taken so many classes, for my own benefit of course, on terminology, anatomy, etc., and of course they were not count toward a degree because hey were all continuing ed courses. I wonder if it stupid for me to go back to school.  Problem is, I could do most managemen ...

Going Back To School
Nov 08, 2011

I was totally inspired by someone who posted yesterday on the "main board" who is 52 years old and based on their loss of income from the transcription field, managed to qualify for a full grant to go back to school.  This person had earned one degree and was working on the next in order to get out of transcription.  I thought, if this person can qualify for a full grant I know I can too since I'm a single mom sometimes not even earning minimum wage with Medquist.  So this morning, I ...

I've been a transcriptionist for 15 years, mainly radiology.  I've enjoyed being home with my two boys while they are growing up.  They are still young, 11 and 7.  But lately I've been thinking about going back to school for either nursing or radiology technologist.  I've even visited one of the schools to talk about what prereq's I'd need to take.  I won't be able to take the actual program until probably 2011.  My dilema is I rea ...

Going Back To School - Advice?
Dec 10, 2009

I have decided to call it quits with MT - I am 55 years old, and even if things turn around in the future it will not be in time for me. Am I too old?  Any suggestions?  TIA ...

OK, I'm Going Back To School In An Effort To Get Out Of The MT
Mar 26, 2010

tar pits.  I've narrowed my choices to Physical Therapy Assistant, Radiology Tech or leaving healthcare all together and becoming a Paralegal.  I though about nursing school, but in the end ruled it out as my sister has been a nurse for 25 years or so and stopped enjoying her job about 20 years ago.  She says it's all paperwork and covering everyone's behind more than it is taking care of the patient.  Plus she's just not happy in her work. I ruled out la ...

I Feel Like I'm Too Old To Go Back To School
May 08, 2013

I'm 36 years old.  Yes, still somewhat young.  I need/want to get out of MTing.  My dream is to work in clinical psychology, which requires a master's degree.  I already have an Associate's degree.  So, if I go back to school it would take me about 5 years to reach my dream.  This would make me 42.  When I think of getting my first job in the pyschology field at 42, sometimes I think that would be too old or I would be going up against 20 somethi ...

Back In School With A Question
Aug 08, 2013

I'm going back to school this semester. I took English 1101 and 1102 back in the late 90s, but sadly I don't remember how to write papers in the correct formats. Do you think I should retake these classes? English is my favorite subject, and while I'm glad I took these classes and passed them, I really wouldn't mind taking them again so I can brush up on my paper writing and research paper skills. What do you think? Another option would be not retaking the classes, but having ...

If I Ever Had Any Doubt About Going Back To School
Nov 12, 2013

I have been helping my husband finish up his degree online for the last year or so and told him when he is done next month I am going back and finishing up my degree. I know everyone says have a plan, or be prepared but since my husband makes more money and actually has potential for a promotion his schooling was top priority and I have been just praying that my job lasted long enough to get him through. So yesterday I got all my transcripts together, filled out the application and set up ...

Going Back To School And Getting Certified As A Medical Assistant
