I am feeling like a loser in medical transcription - Suzie

Posted: Jun 17, 2011

Dear Fellow transcriptionists:

My name is Suzie and I have been a medical transcriptionist for 10 years. I graduated from M-TEC in May 2001 and have only had 4 jobs in 10 years.  I lost two jobs in one month and I am feeling like such a loser and my heart is wounded. I worked for Medware/iMedx for six years and got a 96.9% on my last quality review and I was told that as a independent contractor they could not keep me on; when asked if I could be on employee status they told me they were not hiring employee status.  In the past I have always gotten a 98.9 or higher.  They let me go and then I got a job with The Doctor's Helper and they gave me two weeks and told me that I was not catching on fast; to me it is because I have done speech for six years and then I had to do straight typing and missed two words.

Needless to say, I feel like a loser and I am very depressed. I work very hard and I give my heart and soul to my work. I am 54 years old and what is to become of me. I am planning on starting medical coding school at the Andrew's School in July and I want to be an independent contractor and then study for 3 hours.

I do not know what is going to become of me. I just want to succeed. I am 54. What a loser I am.

I am testing with other companies.

Thanks for listening.

Fondly,

Suzanne

We all have days, okay even weeks, when we beat up on ourselves. At least I do. I don't know you, but it seems to me that you are a person who cares about doing good work. You have worked hard. I'm older than you, so I can even tell you that some YEARS are better than others. You're having a tough year. Call me and let me help you sort things out a little. I noticed that you said you are going to be enrolling with us soon. I want to help you sort out whether this is actually the right time for you to do that or not. My gut feeling is that it may be tough to start a new job and a new course all at the same time, but we can talk about it. In the meantime, just know that you are NOT a loser.

Hugs to you - OldsterMT

First, let me say that I'm sorry for what you have been through.

If you worked for a company for 6 years and only had one QA review below their standards, this seems a bit unreasonable.

As for the new company, there is usually a probationary period (only 2 weeks?) for both you and the company to decide if the working relationship is a good fit.

You certainly have enough years of experience - hopefully with multiple specialties and acute care.

I'm in your age range and I have been doing this work longer. I've seen what I considered a career become a job. I've worked for many many MTSOs. The MTSOs all seem to be missing the good in the good, bad, and ugly.

So, spruce up that resume, highlight your experience, your usual or highest QA scores, your training, your depth of work experience, and apply for another job. One step at a time, and I hope you find a home that is better for you.

Best wishes!

...or maybe you're a winner who lost a game or two. - "Winning!" (Charlie Sheen)

Please don't beat yourself up and call yourself names. You likely would not call another person "loser" or treat them unkindly, so please don't do this to yourself. You do not deserve it. There are many circumstances in every job and in every job loss. Losing a job does not make you a loser. Take some time for yourself, relax, and try again. If you have been an MT for this long, you have a lot of experience. Time to get back on the horse and try again. I am sure there are many companies out there that would be glad to have you. Best of luck to you!

Hang in there and keep the faith! I've been through some harrowing stuff the last fews weeks, looking for a job after being with the same company for 12+ years and just feeling completely steamrolled by a company I thought valued me. Cry when you need to, then wipe your eyes and start sending out resumes, even to companies that aren't advertising. Remember, what you tell yourself is what you will be. I know this is hard because I like to beat myself up too, but you've just got to tell yourself it's going to be okay and pretty soon things will turn around. Asking God to give you strength doesn't hurt either! You are going to be just fine - I promise!

Has Anyone Seen Final Results From Transcend Biggest Loser Contest
Sep 12, 2010

that was promised for 08/28/2010?    This was by far the most unfair contest yet.  It was spread over all platforms, all work types, and there is no way someone on BeyondBelief can compete in production with someone on Escription.  I hope they think future contests out a little bit better so everyone can have a chance to win rather than just the chosen few.  ...

Medical Transcription At Home To Become A Medical Scribe?
Jan 20, 2015

Has anybody left medical transcription at home to become a medical scribe?  I have an opportunity to do so but there aren't any scribes currently in my area and I don't know anyone who has worked as a scribe before.  The scribe position starting pay is almost double what I make as an MT per hour so it is very tempting, I just don't know much about it. ...

Oct 15, 2009

A legal contact was inquiring about the connection of medical mistakes related to off-shored transcription mistakes.  I have told him to review these boards and hopefully he will benefit from the information here.  While he did not discuss the exact case, I think that he will be able to use the off-shore transcription issue to his client's benefit or at least highlight that the provider in question does not have as rigorous control on processing records as other pr ...

U.S. Transcription Non Medical
Sep 01, 2011

I answered an ad for U.S. Transcription posted on MT Jobs, was asked to test, and within an hour of submitting my test I was offered a job.  After my heart came down from a happy dance at an actual job offer, I found I really have some things to think about before I say yes. This would be for 2nd shift, non-medical transcription at 0.06/cpl for straight transcription, 0.03/cpl if a company provided template is used.  I suppose I need to ask what my expected production would be before ...

New To Medical Transcription
Apr 20, 2012

I'm fairly new to medical transcription. I received my certification in 2010 and was a little discouraged when applying for jobs and they were all looking for experienced agents to work from home. Has anyone else done this or know how to get started? Or even know someone who needs a transcription intern? ...

Anyone ever do non-medical transcription? I'm interested to know if you liked it. I tried it for a few days and just decided it wasn't for me. Non-medical Transcription?
Dec 08, 2012

I'm a 2011 MT grad who posted not long ago looking for advice.  While googling MT companies to apply to, I found some non-medical transcription services, namely one that transcribes dialogue from a video for production/entertainment companies.  This site had instructions and a download to take the test.  What the heck, I'm going to take it and see what happens.  Since MT is practically a dead-end career, I've been trying to come up with ther ways to utilize my ...

Thank You Medical Transcription
Aug 23, 2013

I quit a job a dozen years ago to jump into the "Work At Home" dream.  I had little money, was quite naive, worked from dark to dark with absolutely no help from the small MTSO, who later ripped me off $5,000.  BUT, I learned. After my first experience with "running out of work", I just found more work.  I got unusually lucky and found a job and was MTing again in a few days. That gig gave me nearly 10 years of working for another small MTSO.  I got busy and made tons of mon ...
