Going back to school - info on court reporting and/or scoping? - NYMT

Anybody have any info on court reporting and/or scoping?

I've thought about court reporting too but ... - MThere

my brother-in-law is a DA and says they just replaced their court reporter with simply recording trials. I don't think court reporting is disappearing as much as medical transcription, but it's definitely going the voice rec route, as well.

Thanks for your input.

In the county courthouse, there were 8 court reporters - Backwards Typist

One quit and one is retiring at the end of the year. They do not plan on replacing those two spots. They are also looking into a type of VR/recording. I can't remember the name of it but it doesn't look gook for that occupation either.

High drop out rate in court reporting - thoughtofittoo

There is a high drop-out rate in court reporting due to learning to use the stenomachine. It's pretty tricky. I checked into it a couple of times, but decided not to go that route. But, if they are going to replace it with VR as well, then I wouldn't even bother.
If it were 25 years ago, and I was in the financial - mess Im in today, I probably - (sm)

would've tried court reporting. But as stated above, with the possibility of VR becoming more widely used, and the fact that I'm not 25 anymore, I think that train has already left the station, and I'm still standing on the platform........
very high drop out rate per instructor... - toby

I attended court reporting school in the late 1970s at a very well-known and highly acredited school. One day our instructor had a semi-major meltdown and spilled her guts to our class, stating that there was a 98% drop-out rate. Not something you want to hear when you're spending the big bucks for tuition and you've already got 2+ years invested. It's not that hard to learn the stenotype machine. It is tricky but can be done. The real challenge is in gaining speed, from the lowest speed of, say, 40 wpm, up to 200+ wpm which is needed to be able to take the certification tests. I was at it 3 years and could not get past 180 before I burned out. Of my starting class of about 30 newbies only one person actually got certificated that I know of.

I was just on jury duty and in my county there - wm

are no court reports, everything is filmed for video and audio. I guess someone might transcribe the audio, but now sure who or how.

Transcribing Court Reporting - OldHandAtThis

[ In Reply To ..]
Transcription would only be done if it was needed (for example if the case was to be appealed) as is a big undertaking and quite expensive. It has to be exactly accurate, just as medical transcription should be. The attorneys for the client who needs a transcription would arrange for the transcription and pay for it (ultimately of course, the client pays.) If you want to try your hand at doing this, I would suggest that you put together a brochure describing your experience, references, equipment, TAT, rates, etc., and contact attorneys in your area.

court reporting will never be replaced - by VR

[ In Reply To ..]
There is absolutely no way! Yes, they are recording audio/visual more and more, but VR or SR could never do that job. There are always multi-speakers - and then think about trials - no way, never. Court reporters don't just work in the courtrooms - they can travel to take depos, hearings, and do all kinds of things and make BIG money doing it. I don't want to wait four years to get my degree and the only school we had here in Vegas closed a year ago. This is not a course I would feel comfortable taking on-line, which is why I passed on the course.

I was thinking to try it.  There is also the scoping end of it as Ive been reading about. Hopefully some reporters could use an editor. As I have an AAS degree in legal secretarial and with the MT background, I might have an advantage. Thanks for all the input.

Don't waste your money. I enrolled in a court reporting school a few years back and was in the program 1.5 years. The cost is ridiculous. By the time I got to the speed they required I could have gotten a 4 year degree. I ended up doing medical transcription after I could not get the speed. Only one person in our class actually made it as a court reporter..

Has Anyone Researched Court Reporting Or Scoping? SM

All of my work seems to be going to EMR or voice recognition.  I have three kids and I need to stay financially stable.  As I hang on to my last account, I am looking to go back to school.  I dont know where to go.  I was thinking about court reporting and/or scoping work.  Does anyone know where I can find information on these careers? Better yet, does anyone have personal experiencing working within this field? ...

Court Reporting
Mar 03, 2011

As I have all of my eggs in one basket with medical transcription, I am looking into court reporting.  I have been in this industry for 20 years and I have seen the constant decline of this industry.   I am just curious if anyone has knowledge of court reporting and if it would be an easy transition.  I will primarily be focused on worker's comp depositions.  I don't foresee any problem with the doctor's deposition as I have the medical terminology down.  Thanks for any i ...

Has The Same Thing Happened To Court Reporting?
Nov 06, 2013

Just got to wondering. I know back when I made 50K doing MT, I was told court reporters were making twice that.  I never really understood what they do, some kind of shorthand machine? only I don't think they use that anymore.  So has their career gone down the tubes as well? anyone know? ...

Is 40 Too Old To Go Back To School?
Feb 02, 2010

Being an MT is not paying my bills.  I am thinking about going back to school, but I am 40 and it has been so long since I was in high school.  I have to google to help my son with his 4th grade homework let alone do college math. AND it will be 2 to 4 years before I will get a good job.  I am leaning towards radiology tech, lab tech, or maybe nursing.  Can't  decide just yet but I know that EMR isn't going to be taking those jobs away!!!  Any advice ...

How are you adjusting?  Today is my first day and I want to pull my hair out, lol!  I know I need to give myself a chance to adjust, but i'm the type I want to learn quickly so I don't stress over it or feel incompetent.  I'm just rusty I guess, I hope I get into the groove of things, maybe get to the point where I enjoy it.  Just wondering how you all are doing with the school or profession change.  I've been an MT so long I feel like i'm c ...

How do you get a loan to help pay bills while in school?  I'm in the middle of a FAFSA loan for fall semester, but she told me it is for school only.  Someone said they were using part of it to supplement the household income?  What kind of loan would that be?  TIA ...

BACK TO SCHOOL
Jul 12, 2010

Like so many others at MQ and everywhere, I went back to school, spent 4 1/2 years and $40 K+.  That was 1 1/2 years ago.  I cannot get a job teaching nor subbing, not even in a clerical capacity.  Student loan has come due and I'm back to struggling here at Q, making hardly enough to pay bills, much less take on the $350 a month student loan payment.  I got a degree in education and in our city there are now problems in the major district, citing crooked administration ...

Going Back To School?
Apr 20, 2011

I am almost 51.  I have been in this profession as well as many other aspects from receptionist to office manager. I was doing transcription when it was considered "just typist".  I have taken so many classes, for my own benefit of course, on terminology, anatomy, etc., and of course they were not count toward a degree because hey were all continuing ed courses. I wonder if it stupid for me to go back to school.  Problem is, I could do most managemen ...

Going Back To School
Nov 08, 2011

I was totally inspired by someone who posted yesterday on the "main board" who is 52 years old and based on their loss of income from the transcription field, managed to qualify for a full grant to go back to school.  This person had earned one degree and was working on the next in order to get out of transcription.  I thought, if this person can qualify for a full grant I know I can too since I'm a single mom sometimes not even earning minimum wage with Medquist.  So this morning, I ...

I've been a transcriptionist for 15 years, mainly radiology.  I've enjoyed being home with my two boys while they are growing up.  They are still young, 11 and 7.  But lately I've been thinking about going back to school for either nursing or radiology technologist.  I've even visited one of the schools to talk about what prereq's I'd need to take.  I won't be able to take the actual program until probably 2011.  My dilema is I rea ...

Going Back To School - Advice?
Dec 10, 2009

I have decided to call it quits with MT - I am 55 years old, and even if things turn around in the future it will not be in time for me. Am I too old?  Any suggestions?  TIA ...

OK, I'm Going Back To School In An Effort To Get Out Of The MT
Mar 26, 2010

tar pits.  I've narrowed my choices to Physical Therapy Assistant, Radiology Tech or leaving healthcare all together and becoming a Paralegal.  I though about nursing school, but in the end ruled it out as my sister has been a nurse for 25 years or so and stopped enjoying her job about 20 years ago.  She says it's all paperwork and covering everyone's behind more than it is taking care of the patient.  Plus she's just not happy in her work. I ruled out la ...

I Feel Like I'm Too Old To Go Back To School
May 08, 2013

I'm 36 years old.  Yes, still somewhat young.  I need/want to get out of MTing.  My dream is to work in clinical psychology, which requires a master's degree.  I already have an Associate's degree.  So, if I go back to school it would take me about 5 years to reach my dream.  This would make me 42.  When I think of getting my first job in the pyschology field at 42, sometimes I think that would be too old or I would be going up against 20 somethi ...

Back In School With A Question
Aug 08, 2013

I'm going back to school this semester. I took English 1101 and 1102 back in the late 90s, but sadly I don't remember how to write papers in the correct formats. Do you think I should retake these classes? English is my favorite subject, and while I'm glad I took these classes and passed them, I really wouldn't mind taking them again so I can brush up on my paper writing and research paper skills. What do you think? Another option would be not retaking the classes, but having ...

If I Ever Had Any Doubt About Going Back To School

So yesterday I got all my transcripts together, filled out the application and set up ...

Embarrasing Question About Going Back To School
Feb 03, 2015

I'm going back to school in May to study coding at my local junior college. Some of the classes are online and some are classroom. The last time I attended school we took notes with a pen and notebook.  If I take a pen and nootbook, will I be the only one in class doing so?
