Freaking out... - Annon

Posted: Aug 31, 2010

About the "federally-mandated electronic medical record" - My transcription company of course is not saying anything about this, but I've heard the rumors about this taking effect in 2011 or 2012.  I've also heard that my MT job will be essentially "wiped out."  I really need to get some accurate info on this...I can't seem to find anything on it that a) I can understand, or b) can trust as a reliable resource!  Does anybody know anything about this?  Thanks so much!  I just want to know how to plan for the future...

The goal for a national standardized EMR is 2014. It is not a federal mandate but facilities receive financial incentives from the feds to implement it. MTs/editors will still be needed as EMR does not necessarily translate into VR but there will definitely be less of us. There are websites you can access to do research if you Google it.

Thank you so much for your input. I will do some more research when I get some time. I'm a little relieved by your reply, so again, thank you!

I had an account go EMR two years ago (May 2008). I lost 75% of my work at that time. There is still a need for some transcription on this account, but the line counts are much smaller. This was once more than a full time job for me. Now, it is barely part time. I had to pick up more accounts, unfortunately that did not pay the same. I find that I am working longer and harder for less money. I agree that there will always be a need for us, just not as much as there is now. Platforms are the best way for us to combine our job with EMR. Platforms make life easier for us MTs.

Hang in there, like the other poster days they will still need medical language specialists/medical transcriptionists to help clean up that voice recognition software or wrong inputs made into databases I am sure.

Either way, we only have today. If you are working and want to re-train into something else, sure seems to me that many areas do not have the jobs they used to have. But we keep working, praying and trying. That is all we can do.

I still remember when we were told that there would be paperless offices and we would not be needed, when I was working at the hospital and medical office.

Well they still do need people it seems to me.

Just my thoughts, but I do for sure understand how you feel.

EMR is an Electronic Medical Record. It is not necessarily VR. There are many different EMR programs out there that incorporate transcribed reports into the software. No all are doctor's entering their own info or straight VR. An Electronic medical record is simply all of a patient's medical information consolidated into a computer software program that can be accessed by numerous providers. I understand the panic, but it is not an EMR that is taking our jobs or changing us into editors it is VR that is doing that. An EMR is nothing but a paper chart that is now in a computer format. Many facilities utilize MR technicians to scan paper records into electronic records. I have worked as a consultant at several facilities that were switching over to EMR and sometimes that is all I did all day was analyze records to make sure the paper records transferred into the EMR correctly or I did analysis to make sure records were not missing like OP reports, H&P's, Consents, etc. Also charts have to be analyzed for completeness which means you view everything on a computer screen page by page for unsigned consents, unsigned doctor's orders, etc. Google "Conditions of participation" for a better explaination of mandates by Medicare, JCAHO for the most part follows the Medicare guidelines. Every chart has to be in a specific order according to the mandate.

Hope that helps ease some fears and correct some misconceptions.

Maybe you could ask your school if they offer scribe training. I have been noticing increased ads looking for scribes in our area. A scribe is a person who works alongside the physician and inputs the information into the EMR for the physician. It would seem that there would be an increased need for scribes starting in 2014.

When you search for scribe jobs, do you use the keywords medical scribe, scribe, or something else?

There are apparently a few out there, but it's an extremely, extremely, extremely inefficient way for a physician to get reports entered. One person following another around all day producing what have to be record-breaking low line counts?! Plus, that would only cover part of the day--many doctors work long and irregular hours. Who covers those hours? Plus, the pay will end up being quite low, unless some important functions, beyond basic typing, are added. After all, physicians could literally hire right out of high schools for this since a scribe would only need to recognize terminology for one physician, or a few, who would be right there to answer questions.

I think it's hilarious for almost the entire POD management team to be begging so hard for extra help right now, with over *half* of our jobs out of TAT.  Each one of them have sent repeated emails this morning calling for "all hands on deck", and the POD mistress even sent one last night at midnight.  I'm just sitting here ... humming to myself, sipping my coffee, working at normal speed ... watching the entire team totally freak out.  It's kind of fun watching the ...

I work for a hospital that has been using the Dictaphone speech the last couple of years.  We were told how our production was just going to increase and how it was going to be WONDERFUL.  My production is still where it was two years ago and I would be better off typing each report.  Sorry for the ranting, but while working this evening, I just got set off by the following: "SOCIAL HISTORY:  He is down to 15 cattle formally worked as a strips all conservation engineer. &nb ...
