ER work types - newtoER

Posted: Apr 24, 2013

Hi, I've been an MT for 8 years, but have never, ever typed ER reports.  My company has been very slow and I was applying for other jobs and my supervisor just told me she has another account she can add me to and it is an ER account.  I'm not sure why I never thought about it before, why ER reports don't get in the regular pool like the rest of the hospital, but was just wondering, is a strictly ER account usually good work to do?  Are they just your typical transcription, or harder to type, harder to get a line count or anything like that.  I have a job lined up to interview with, but would rather stay with my current company if I could make more on this new account, so just wanting opinions.  Thank you.

ER worktypes are the easiest you will ever do. Go for it. I have been an MT almost 25 years and make decent line count on ER work. Usually they are short and sweet!!

Can you ask to have a listen first - sm

to see what they are like and whether you would like it or not? I have done ER over the years several places. Like the poster above, some of them are very easy and great lines. On the other hand, I have also had some of the very worst on ER acounts, eating, speed talking through PE/labs and basically everything, have to stay on your toes with them especially since more errors can occur with that. Some am able to form a normal of sorts on PE but then edit as listen along. So, short answer in my opinion, depends on the account, so ask to listen to some of them to see if you like. I kind of like them for a change for the variety and ER atmosphere.

Easy, in my opinion - see msg

If you have acute care, these will be the easiest thing you ever did--about as easy as clinic. If you only have clinic, I do believe they won't be too difficult, but you may get stuck on labs and perhaps some recommended procedures.

I've had very few "bad" ER dictators in my day.

Love ER, but you will get speed talkers - Especially the younger docs

They will fly through the PE and labs. Just fly through them, some of these kids do. I had one guy a long time ago on my first job where I got paid nothing and one night it was only his stuff coming up. I just signed off and quit for the night. I was making $2 and hour and that was not worth the aggravation. I think everyone else had the same thought that night because the only jobs coming up were him and the lady doc who did all of her stuff using the speaker phone. Terrible. Just terrible.

Most of the time, the ER stuff is really interesting, though. You get such a cross section of everything. My favorite one was the 4 yo boy who had a chief complaint of Lego in nares. If you do get this account see if they have normals or you can have access to old reports. Some of the docs you may have to go slow on at first but make normals as soon as you can if they don't already have them and you'll fly through it. I made good money on ER reports.

beer bottle up the rear, and way up there, confirmed on x-ray. The sound of the PA's voice was priceless.

Then there was the mom who had just brought a preemie home and had other kids, etc. Her treatment was Xanax and she absolutely deserved it! I do so miss ER work. Fun stuff.
My ER chuckle was guy who came in cause he had - an infection in his mangina. nm

ER was my favorite--sm - anon

I could get good lines once I got used to it because most of the docs say the same things over and over. Most were motor mouths, though. Unfortunately, the ones I used to work on went to EMR (or the equivalent) rather quickly. Because of that, my only advice would be to make sure she continue with acute care work too. If I had not at that time I would have likely been without a job but I had acute as a secondary.

ER is EASY!! And you can get GREAT LINES. - See Message

Usually there are the same ER docs. Depending on how big the hospital is you can have as many as 15 to 20 different ER dictators. So you can create templates for normals/standards for them. Most like to say the same thing all the time in their physical exams and review of systems. And they usually use the same format so you can create Macros (templates/normals/standards) for each one of them.

They typically are not very in-depth as H&Ps and Consults - I kind of think of them as "mini H&Ps." But you can really rack up the lines on them, not difficult at all. And a lot of times you can end up with the same doctor for like 5 or more reports in a row, sometimes more.

The hospital I use to work at, ERs were nice because on Saturdays (the only time I got to do ERs) there would be maybe 3 docs working and there would be like 20 reports in a row from the same doc and I could just pull in his template and do like 10 reports an hour. One of them would say for Physical Exam "use my norm" it his norm was a lengthy physical exam that I got good lines for and never had to type it, just key in the shortcut name and it printed out. They also had a "standard group review of systems" and they would says for review of systems, use "group ROS" and I would just type "ROS" and the review of systems would print out.

ERs are easy, easy, easy. You will love them. When I first started in acute care, I started out with ERs first and then my supervisor gradually progressed me up to other work-types.

I LOVE ER reports and miss doing them. - UsedToLoveMT

I get everything but ER reports these days, and miss it very much. True about the speed talkers and sometimes (usually) background noise since they don't seem to sit down and dictate in a quiet room as I'm sure they don't have the luxury of time, BUT they say what they gotta say and move on which means more lines and more $ for you. I say go for it.

Newbies tend to get assigned to ER. Pros make too - many lines toward bonus/incentive pay. nm

The Types Of Jobs I See A Lot Of....
Aug 02, 2012

I make it a habit to check job boards and listings every day.  A couple of places I check a lot are Indeed and Craigslist.  (I know Craigslist jobs have to be taken with a grain of salt because some of them are scams.) This is kind of interesting to me: For some reason, I notice a lot of jobs at veterinary clinics and chiropractors' offices.   It's just curious to me.  Are these two types of businesses doing so well that they're always needing more help, or a ...

LPH, Work Types, ESLs
Mar 10, 2012

I'd like to ask a favor please.  When people post what their LPH is, like one poster below saying 500 LPH, would you also post what work types you are working on and the percentage of ESLs.  Acute care or clinic, radiology, ER. It is not that I am doubting, but just comparing it to my work. The numbers I have seen people post are unimaginable to me if they are doing acute care with 80% ESLs and all work types and exceeding 99% accuracy.  A lot of normal templates in your ...

Instant Text Types Out Suffixes Of Words
Mar 04, 2010

It drives me crazy (not to mention is very time consuming), but Instant Text types out suffixes of words, e.g. I type 'complaint' then realize it should be 'complaints' so I backspace and add the 's'.  It then types out 'complaintubal sterilization' (it expanded the 'ts'). This happens a lot, and I wonder if anyone knows if there is a setting I can change. Thank you in advance. ...
