Anyone gone from MT to law enforcement/police transcription? - Former MDI-mt

If anyone has information, advice or other helpful links regarding transitioning from medical transcription to law enforcement/police transcription (or maybe even criminal justice?), I would be happy to receive it. With MT job searches pretty much limited to mostly nationals, it is very difficult to find those smaller companies that value their employees, pay a decent rate (0.09+) and have consistent work. (Where does one find them?)

I worked for a large metropolitan police force in their transcription department for a number of years. It was fascinating. Pay and benefits were good. They really had no requirements other than fast typing and accuracy (this was early '90s).

Drawbacks were dealing with the testosterone; many of the officers were nice, but when they were nasty they could be really nasty. Also, we'd get called up to homicide and end up sitting next to some of the suspects while they were interrogated. We also had to work rotating shifts and days off (sometimes working as many as 9-10 days in a row, one week on overnights, one week on evenings, one week on days, repeating.... We got no breaks if it was busy. (Legally, we were allowed them, but try leaving a room filled with adrenaline-hopped cops who want to get out a.s.a.p.)

So, it's fascinating, but it has both good and bad points. What doesn't?

I am in college again for criminal justice, and honestly I had no idea that my transcription skills might be a relevant job skill in a police department! Can you please tell a little more about how you got the job? Thanks!

a major urban department, name withheld to protect the criminals, all armed with guns and the power of the state. Fascinating's a good word for it. BTW, a lot of them take special exception to uppity women, and never ever, EVER argue with a cop.

(The deal was I got to get experience with MT when the IA was all finished, but some days I never ran out of IA.)

I have MT training through a school and 15 years experience as a 911/police/fire dispatcher. As is the case when entering medical transcription, you absolutely need to have a background in law enforcement in order to pass the test. There is a ton of career-specific vernacular, and quite honestly, the initial test that I had to pass was hard - even with 15 years of radio experience behind me. It consisted of tscribing various radio transmissions FILLED with 10 codes and jargon specific to the field.

What is the training called, or where do you go to get it? Is it available through reputable/respectable online schools? It's not the same thing as a "legal transcriptionist," is it? I don't want to do 911 calls or dispatches, nor briefs. I was thinking of the interrogations, depositions, interviews, stuff like that. I cannot do sufficient online searches if I don't have the right keywords. Can anyone help?

Would someone explain to me how is that this company can legally pay us a lower rate for ASR compared to transcription? After they pushed ASR on me, (said that I wouldn't ever get a 50:50 ratio of ASR to transcription) I am getting mostly ASR work. My pay has dropped significantly. Can they do this? ...

Since the advent of voice recognition and overseas outsourcing, transcription has ceased to be a profession. I will NEVER -- repeat, NEVER make the money I was making as a transcriptionist at a hospital 5 years ago, before we were replaced by VR and cheap outsourcing to India. It seems that everyone has negative things to say about how employers do not pay MTs what they're worth and how they offshore the easy stuff, but pile on the lousy ESL stuff on the transcriptionists in the States. Too bad there can't be a general strike of U.S. MTs - a day without transcription - just to show how we're needed. It seems to be the only thing employers would understand.
