I HATE Voice Recognition! I could just cry! - Daisy

Posted: Jul 12, 2012

I know this won't help, but I just feel that I have to vent a little before I go on to complete the document. My hands are getting so sick and tired of all the acrobatics they have to perform to do ALL THE EDITING necessary! One after the other without a break! I am literally sitting here ready to cry.  I just want to type! I hate the mouse - and NO! I cannot be "mouse-less" you big shot executives! You try doing this job!

if it weren't so sad it would be funny - Drone

how the stupid thing just WILL NOT LEARN.

Oh yes it does (the hospital version) - Snow Bunny

Until recently, I worked for a service where about 50% was VR and I was honestly impressed with the output. Yeah, about 5% of the reports needed a serious overhaul, but that's what happens with ESLs. Otherwise, I had no problem averaging 300 lph.

I think it all depends upon three elements:
1. The product being used.
2. How diligent the service is at QA.
3. How diligent the facilities are at constantly training the engine.

Take one element out of the equation, and you'll have problems on your end.

I may use the single version, but the rules still apply.

Unsolicited advice... - TK

I mean this in no way, shape, or form to be derogatory, so please do not take it that way.

I see a lot of posts describing how difficult it is to get line counts using VR, but I don't really have much of a problem, and if I'm doing something different that would be helpful to anyone I would be more than happy to share my "technique."

First, if there are really long pauses in the dictation, I will take that time to kind of look ahead in the report and number any lists or at least check punctuation (roughly), get rid of any spaces between paragraphs that don't belong, etc. Just little things. I find what helps for me is following along the dictation with the arrow key and reading it in my head as it is being dictated. I even read a little ahead of the dictation as I'm listening. I still have to use my mouse once in a while in a report, but not that often.

I've actually only been at this for about a year and a half. Before I started working at home I worked in a hospital that was straight typing. I actually get more accomplished with VR.

As I said, I mean this in no way to be snooty, snippy, or snide. I hope I have helped someone who reads this.

wow..what does that say about this board that your kind hint - has to be qualified so much??

That seems sad that your genuine offer of tips would be met with vitriole. I always appreciate hearing how other people are doing on VR or MT or whatever..I like comparing line counts, etc. It keeps me honest.

thanks for the tip :)

agree with liking tips! - ann

I absolutely like tips as well and thank you! Some don't work for me, but others do, and I always try them out!

For me, a tip in the past that has helped was to make easy shorts for any key combinations that require me to move my hands off the home keys. I use ss,ff,kk, ll, mm, etc. for many of the editing commands, adding a period, comma, deleting a word, etc. The trick is to get them into my memory. But you really do lose valuable time moving your hands off the home keys and back again. My speed went up after I did this and memorized them to the point they became second nature. Keep the tips coming!!

Oh, and I made shorts to join the highlighter and voice to my cursor, a short to delete 3 words, 4 words, 5 words, a short to add hyphens at the appropriate place for telephone numbers that have area code, hyphens for para 0000 etc.
Although, I don't work for the same company - TK

So, what I do may not work for you. I should have taken that into consideration before I offered my 2 cents' worth. :)
Interesting post but - cherevyl
[ In Reply To ..]
not sure I understand what you mean when you say you make a short for deleting a word or multiple words.
deleting word - ann
[ In Reply To ..]
For instance, whether you have SH or IT, you can make shorts for things you do repeatedly. Sometimes a big batch of words are wrong or the dictator changes their mind and rather than do Ctrl bcksp or Ctrl delete, I make a SH entry for instance that will delete 4 words, and in my case I name the command d2 (deletes the next 2 words), d3, d4, etc. Much easier than for instance Ctrl del, ctrl del, ctrl del, ctrl del to delete the next 4 words, or faster than using the shift and highlighting it and deleting it. Anything you can do to keep your fingers on the home keys instead of using the mouse or moving them from the home keys will save you time. Hope this makes sense :)
Thanks. That clears it up. nm - thelonelybulli

You get more - accomplished

[ In Reply To ..]
but how much more? Just curious. I mean it would have to be double to justify the pay cut. Just asking.

more accomplished - anne

[ In Reply To ..]
My tips were just some that have helped me increase my line count, and I average usually close to 300. I agree with you wholeheartedly, I DON'T like the pay, and since I can easily straight type 200+ LPH, this is still a pay cut!! But it is what it is, unfortunately now that they have figured out how to screw us, I don't think that is going to change. I personally wouldn't mind VR IF the pay were maybe 60% or 70% of our straight type pay, which I think would be much fairer! Another thing, when they first started with VR, remember how they said that not all dictators would be put on it, and they would review it and if the VR was not 80% accurate the dictator would be removed? What ever happened to that??
Actually - I remember
[ In Reply To ..]
after complaining a few times and having doctors removed, they said it was 85%. I'm like you, where did that go. I'm lucky to get 30% accurate. Frankly, I don't think it is worth any pay cut. I also can type 200 LPH and get about 220 with VR. I have tried all the supposed tips and crappy VR is crappy VR and no matter what you do, when you have to change every other word, you cannot build speed. Please don't take my post as criticism because it is not. I am just commenting on my own experience. I actually know what happened. VR sucks and if they left it at that 85%, they would have no doctors on it. So, they decided to blame it on us for overusing the F11 and decided to change the rules to benefit them.
agree about VR - anne
[ In Reply To ..]
I agree wholeheartedly with you...when you get the reports that are that bad, it is easier to straight type for sure!! I am lucky to have several accounts that usually are 70% or better accuracy, still a lot to change, but in those cases using the shorts DOES help, but anything less than that is just a total loss!! It really makes me mad how unscrupulous they are and what liars they are!!

but you're missing the point - Drone

[ In Reply To ..]
A lot of the doctors say the same thing over and over, especially in H & P and ROS. Why after 50000 tries can't SR get what they are saying?

with long pauses and no garbled stuff - I simply hit alt m

[ In Reply To ..]
Skip the whole pause, with some dictators it is a god send..

I have the same sentiments every danged day. - (And I think most execs are ILLITERATE)..

[ In Reply To ..]
To think that VR, or Indians, can do this job in such a way as to make medical records accurate, legible and accessible, they can't possibly be anything BUT illiterate.

Just because some dude's got a "CEO" after his name doesn't necessarily mean the guy can read.

Voice Recognition - Is Anybody Making Any Money At All On Voice?
Jan 12, 2013

I was wondering, is anybody making any money at all on voice?  I keep hearing just minimum or maybe a little more.  I call minimum wage 7.50 to 8.00 an hour.  My experience with it was at one point I was told that I hadn't made enough for minimum and they had to do make-up pay.  So how is everybody's experience with voice?  I run from it, and I just want to know if anybody really can make an money? Thanks. ...

Voice Recognition Pay
Jun 02, 2011

I'm infuriated that the quota to keep benefits is the same as it was before voice recognition.   I'm KILLING myself to try to keep up to maintain health insurance and just can't do it.  With 96% plus voice recognition reports and half pay from straight typing, I'm losing health care benefits.  SO UNFAIR!!! ...

(voice Recognition) VR Pay
Sep 26, 2011

Have to learn VR soon.  What if a report comes to you and there were no corrections to be made, does MT still get paid for the lines on the report or do you only get paid for straight typing and then if report has errors you just get paid for those corrections.  Never done VR before and for some reason they make it sound so easy.   ...

Is Everything Voice Recognition Now (sm)
Jan 16, 2014

Is everything with M*Modal now voice recognition?  I'm in an area that until now has been doing regular transcription but am just realizing my area is going to be VR in the very near future.  What little VR I have done I suck at.  I can't afford to be paid less than half of what I am making now so I figure I'll be filing for bankruptcy very soon.  How does anyone make money with VR?  Is there a trick to it that anyone could provide?  I sure could ...

Hate Speech Recognition.
Jul 22, 2013

When I get nothing but VR reports and have to change every second word, it is so hard getting even minimum wage and it is just so much more exhausting than regular typing where you get into a rhythm and I get so many bad dictators doing VR.  If I keep getting nothing but VR, don't know if I will last here.  Anyone else feel like this?  Do these dictators think that all their slurred words, yawns, etc., magically morph into a perfect document.  Ve ...

How Do You Do Voice Recognition Editing?
Oct 31, 2009

Hi:  I worked as an IC for 15 years and then went to work at a hospital for nine years.  There have been layoffs where I work, and I think I will be included in the next round.  I started looking around for jobs at a service again and was shocked to find out how much things have changed.   Now, most of the services do a combination of transcription and voice recognition editing (I had no idea). Can somebody tell me something about VR editing?  How is it done?&nbs ...

Voice Recognition In India
Mar 26, 2010

I'm curious about something and maybe somebody out there knows the answer to this question.  Do the transcriptionists in India do voice recognition or are they regular transcriptionists. Would Like To Get Some Opinions On Voice Recognition
Jan 12, 2011

I would like to get some opinions on voice recognition.  I've never done it before.  I've heard pretty much negativity about it, and it scares me because it sounds like a lot of companies use it.  Also it really concerns me because I have to make at the very least so much amount of money to pay my bills!  I've done clinic, hospital and at-home transcription.  The at-home transcription was not a good experience.  I actually had to go back to the hospital part-time and work a ...

Voice Recognition Myth #1
May 25, 2011

the myth is that we're teaching it! The stupid thing refuses to learn! If this were a human, he or she would have been out the door a long time ago (and the interview process would have gone something like "Oh, yeah I can do transcription, I was a receptionist at a doctor's office!).  So if there's anyone still concerned about being replaced by this thing, and resenting having to "teach" it, you can start worrying about other things (of which I'm sure you have plenty). ...

Voice Recognition Work? Am I The Only One?
Aug 09, 2012

I have read the horror stories over and over about voice recognition and was literally scared to death to take the plunge and try it. I recently got hired on at a large company where my account is about 50/50. It took a bit of getting used to, but have found that I really can edit faster than I can type, and actually enjoy the break from straight typing. But from all the posts I've read about it, I know many people do not enjoy it. Granted, I hired on at another company a while back, where ...

EPIC Voice Recognition
Aug 28, 2012

Does anyone know if the voice recognition part of EPIC is like eScription?  During the short period of time I had to use eScription, we were not allowed to recast sentences, etc.  I honestly don't know how we are going to handle the ESLs when we move to that platform.  We have been doing straight typing but I have to recast a lot of sentences.  I guess in order to train the VR system I will have to transcribe the ESLs verbatim and those documents will not make a whole lo ...

Losing My Job To Voice Recognition
