Is everything voice recognition now (sm) - I see bankruptcy in my future

Posted: Jan 16, 2014

Is everything with M*Modal now voice recognition?  I'm in an area that until now has been doing regular transcription but am just realizing my area is going to be VR in the very near future.  What little VR I have done I suck at.  I can't afford to be paid less than half of what I am making now so I figure I'll be filing for bankruptcy very soon.  How does anyone make money with VR?  Is there a trick to it that anyone could provide?  I sure could use any tips.  I just want to get through the next few years.  Help me out if you can.

probably literally 1% straight. I dont like straight, wish I could give it all to you - just wished SR paid more!

speech rec to loving it. I make a lot more doing SR than I do straight typing. I have gradually come up with a certain rhythm and it makes it easier to get the reports kicked out. Just had to find my niche. Good luck to all!

i dont know how youve escaped this but you get no tips from me - forced to asr since 06

I was forced into ASR in 2006 and have suffered a huge loss in pay since that time. I finally figured out how to make at least 15 an hour, but im not sharing any tips because my pay has been crap for over 7 years. You can figure it out all by yourself.

It's been a really long time since I've seen anything that hateful - Wow

If you are in a position to help someone, why wouldn't you?

I don't understand that level of anger and hatefulness and I hope I never do.

I thought the same thing! WOW. Someone doesn't play well with others. nm - broke

co-workers I have ever seen. Actually, I am not upset about it for me, but I know some people on here who have stories about their lives that would make you cry. Of course, I am talking about people who are compassionate and kind, who would help someone if they could. You may just be the person to hold the key to their happiness. I hope you can sleep well at night knowing how low you went on this one. Good luck, really because it will, I guarantee, come back to haunt you.

Other option, you are trying to start a fight.

Same here ... barely do any straight typing anymore and I'm OK with it - anon

I think last pay period I did less than 5 straight typing reports in those 2 weeks - less than $20 worth? I'm OK with that, I actually do well with SR and like the poster above, I get into a rhythm and a depth of concentration that is different than with straight typing but once you find that "zone", you'll be amazed at how easy and relaxed you'll feel with it.

it is much easier on the hands. Love it. - n/m

MUCH harder on my hands. Too many corrections. - nm

not for me. Just speed through and listen. Much easier than typing - depends on accounts I guess

I agree... soooooo many corrections - JustMe
[ In Reply To ..]
If it would learn, it would be one thing. I have to make soooooooooo many corrections on most of the reports that it's hard to get into a rhythm. Job security, I guess.

In the zone?? - dnr

You must have good ASR. I have to start and stop so much that I have no continuity of thought. My count depends on the quality of ASR, the amount of formatting and CP checking I have to do. ASR quality is horrible. Too many accounts and CP traps (quirky demands).

My accounts and dictators are just as difficult as everyone else's - NM

exactly you just have to learn to roll with it - love ASR

macros - macros macros

[ In Reply To ..]
the ROS and PE sections are never going to be correct with VR so take out that crap and put in your own macro.

Agree I have macros for EVERYTHING - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
I have ones to fix the normal mistakes that ASR continues to make. I have PE macros, entire report macros (don't care they said we can't have over 1000 word macros). I am literally waiting for my shortcut expander to go OK enough you idiot I'm outta here and explode..I can't even spell anymore, its crazy, like living with another language

My take. I started in the medical transcription field 35 years ago. The reason was because I was talented at it. I love languages and researching and getting those really tough reports correct medically and grammatically. I am not talented at cleaning up someone else's work, which is what I consider VR to be...someone else's work. It's difficult for me to go faster because I'm getting older, and I have no talent for learning all those shortcuts, my mind does not work that way. That is never going to happen. I can make 150 lines per hour with VR, but I am making very little money because of course we all know it is 1/2 the pay. So, it's the difference between now and then. I did have straight typing that used to keep me busy most of the night, but now, everything is pretty much VR for me. Different people have different talents. You take a bunch of people who are just starting medical documentation and start them from the beginning with this VR...stuff (to be politically correct)...and they might make 500 lines an hour, who knows? Me? Isn't happening. So, I have to decide: Do I keep doing something that makes me miserable and I barely make any money at, or do I throw in the towel? The towel situation is starting to look better and better.

Job count today... - poorhouse

46 ASR reports, 4 straight typing jobs. 138 lines of straight typing, which for me is less than $13 for those 4 jobs. I've noticed that ASR screws up he/she a lot and also lab values with the number 8. I don't know why, but it's annoying.

Speed up dictation, use lots of expander, learn as - like the hot key combinations and

[ In Reply To ..]
Use the mouse as little as possible. You gotta master those shortcuts they teach you and your goal should be to learn to edit with the speed of dictation, letting up off your pedal as little as possible.

I want to thank everyone for responding, even - the grumpy person

[ In Reply To ..]
For those of you who gave me help, I really want to thank you. I feel too set in my ways to master VR but will have to give it a try for the next few years until I can retire and just work part time because I was too stupid to save money when I was younger for this time in my life. Good luck to us all. Thanks again.

Voice Recognition - Is Anybody Making Any Money At All On Voice?
Jan 12, 2013

I was wondering, is anybody making any money at all on voice?  I keep hearing just minimum or maybe a little more.  I call minimum wage 7.50 to 8.00 an hour.  My experience with it was at one point I was told that I hadn't made enough for minimum and they had to do make-up pay.  So how is everybody's experience with voice?  I run from it, and I just want to know if anybody really can make an money? Thanks. ...

Voice Recognition Pay
Jun 02, 2011

I'm infuriated that the quota to keep benefits is the same as it was before voice recognition.   I'm KILLING myself to try to keep up to maintain health insurance and just can't do it.  With 96% plus voice recognition reports and half pay from straight typing, I'm losing health care benefits.  SO UNFAIR!!! ...

(voice Recognition) VR Pay
Sep 26, 2011

Have to learn VR soon.  What if a report comes to you and there were no corrections to be made, does MT still get paid for the lines on the report or do you only get paid for straight typing and then if report has errors you just get paid for those corrections.  Never done VR before and for some reason they make it sound so easy.   ...

How Do You Do Voice Recognition Editing?
Oct 31, 2009

Hi:  I worked as an IC for 15 years and then went to work at a hospital for nine years.  There have been layoffs where I work, and I think I will be included in the next round.  I started looking around for jobs at a service again and was shocked to find out how much things have changed.   Now, most of the services do a combination of transcription and voice recognition editing (I had no idea). Can somebody tell me something about VR editing?  How is it done?&nbs ...

Voice Recognition In India
Mar 26, 2010

I'm curious about something and maybe somebody out there knows the answer to this question.  Do the transcriptionists in India do voice recognition or are they regular transcriptionists. In my mind I thin this is what happened to the transcription profession.  Someone thought that if we can get the work done cheaper in India then we should go there.  However those girls won't have as much terminology as the ones here in the states so if we go to voice recognition that w ...

Would Like To Get Some Opinions On Voice Recognition
Jan 12, 2011

I would like to get some opinions on voice recognition.  I've never done it before.  I've heard pretty much negativity about it, and it scares me because it sounds like a lot of companies use it.  Also it really concerns me because I have to make at the very least so much amount of money to pay my bills!  I've done clinic, hospital and at-home transcription.  The at-home transcription was not a good experience.  I actually had to go back to the hospital part-time and work a ...

Voice Recognition Myth #1
May 25, 2011

the myth is that we're teaching it! The stupid thing refuses to learn! If this were a human, he or she would have been out the door a long time ago (and the interview process would have gone something like "Oh, yeah I can do transcription, I was a receptionist at a doctor's office!).  So if there's anyone still concerned about being replaced by this thing, and resenting having to "teach" it, you can start worrying about other things (of which I'm sure you have plenty). ...

My hands are getting so sick and tired of all the acrobatics they have to perform to do ALL THE EDITING necessary! One after the other without a break! Voice Recognition Work? Am I The Only One?
Aug 09, 2012

I have read the horror stories over and over about voice recognition and was literally scared to death to take the plunge and try it. I recently got hired on at a large company where my account is about 50/50. It took a bit of getting used to, but have found that I really can edit faster than I can type, and actually enjoy the break from straight typing. But from all the posts I've read about it, I know many people do not enjoy it. Granted, I hired on at another company a while back, where ...

EPIC Voice Recognition
Aug 28, 2012

Does anyone know if the voice recognition part of EPIC is like eScription?  During the short period of time I had to use eScription, we were not allowed to recast sentences, etc.  I honestly don't know how we are going to handle the ESLs when we move to that platform.  We have been doing straight typing but I have to recast a lot of sentences.  I guess in order to train the VR system I will have to transcribe the ESLs verbatim and those documents will not make a whole lo ...

Losing My Job To Voice Recognition
Jul 10, 2013

Hello, I have never posted here before but need some advice please.  I have had my own transcription business for 7+ years working for a group of providers who are employed by a clinic.  I have had nothing but praise and appreciation shown over the years regarding my speed and quality of my work.  However, regardless of the preferences of the providers, the clinic is forcing a switch to voice recognition to save money.  They have told me it is due to nothing that I have done ...

VOICE RECOGNITION AND LOSS OF JOB
Jul 30, 2014

Just wondering about this.  For one company that I work for, I had a secondary account -- a hospital, that we were told (e-mailed) we would no longer be typing/editing.  The voice recognition program was getting better all the time and probably was pretty good at this point.  We were just told that we would no longer by doing work for them.  So 2 possibilities: 1)  The hospital was not happy with our editing?   2)  The voice recognition program had gotten so g ...
