I was supposed to have an interview with a company today at 2:00 p.m. I sent in my work environment information prior to the interview. A few minutes before the interview, they told me I needed to buy a lower version of Word and they would re-schedule my interview. I wrote back and told them thank you. These companies are getting free office space from us and they pay us practically nothing! They speak to us as if we were schlumps! With all of this mangled technology companies are using on their platforms that slow us down, they expect us to make up for it by having us by our own software for them to benefit from? I wonder if there is a law about this practice.

Why should WE be required to buy an antique version of - Word? Let THEM update their programs!

If they can't do that, then the LEAST they can do, if they're requiring MTs to use an old version, rather than what came on the state-of-the-art PCs some of these schmucks want us to have, is to supply it free of charge.

ITA! It is ridiculous that some MTSOs require that we pay extra - for XP computers. They s/b using Windows 7 by now.

buying a medical spell checker to start a new job (they required Word 2003). Now, 3 weeks into this new job, I have not had one full day of work. I haven't even made enough money to pay for all these new products I had to buy. Talk about frustrating.

Did they mention in their initial ad or recruitment efforts which version of word or operating systems would work with them?

If not, this is really a "heads-up" call for the rest of us about this company. This really shows what working for this company would be like and how they would ultimately treat you. Thoughtless, cruel, stupidity--these are some of the thoughts that come to mind when I consider what they have done.

Now, you can do us all a great service and tell us the name of the company that did that to you. Personally, I would not consider a company like that. If they treat you this way before they've hired you, imagine what it would be like after being hired. Generally, the initial contact from a company is usually the "best" face they put on, saving and hiding all the gory details for when they've got you cornered like a rat.

I feel my ears "roasting" already from the flames. It's called a "job requirement." All places have them. If you don't like the requirements, don't work there. Just about all software made is x86 based and will not work with newer versions of Windows. Unless you're a computer programmer, it takes a heck of a long time to rewrite programming and debug it for each platform out there.

Don't like the terms? Look elsewhere.

Don't like the terms? Start your own business so you can make the terms.

Don't like the terms? Look up IRS codes - any purchases not reimbursed by your employer are tax deductiblel.

Don't like the terms? Start saving operating systems from older computers you have or at least keep one PC that runs an old operating system. If you have disks from original operating systems, you can research on the 'net and learn how to dual-boot a system.

Take the lemons and make lemonade. At least be glad you have a job. Keep your old job before ever starting a new one; this helps avoid these problems.

What some seem to forget is these are "at-will" employers. If you don't like it, then don't apply. If you are applying to an MTSO, they more than likely are using multiple transcription platforms based on who their clients are and the PC requirements are coming from the CLIENTS, not the MTSO. If it were up to an MTSO, more than likely they would wish that all of their clients were on one platform, using one PC spec, using one set of instructions but they are not and that is what it is like working for an MTSO. If you don't want to deal with these job requirements, then don't apply and find greener grass elsewhere.

Can anyone give me insight as to what I may be doing wrong here? I applied to a large company as an IC for evening shift. I passed the first interview, took the test and was told I scored very high and the QA score on the testing was 99.9%. I have 20 years experience. I checked the work load last night before bed to see if I would have much to do this morning. There was a TON ... as in, every account in the western region looked backed up, not just my accounts. Totally ridiculous this valid blank and invalid blank. It is invalid if I don't understand it and leave a blank (which is what I am trained to do) but it is a valid blank if they however cannot understand it. I am marked off for my INVALID blanks but not for their VALID blanks. I do not now and never have left blanks without trying to fill them in.
