PRN MT and work production - Cynnamon

Posted: Sep 16, 2013

Very bummed out and disgusted.   Started first day, software installation went perfect, but could not get trained properly on their proprietary system because of conference calls, multiple IMs, all kinds of rucus going on there.  Now I am wondering, was I offered over 9cpl to start and SUPER flexible times/days to compensate for a clunky, antiquated system (have to populate the template headers, no pay for that)!!  Thank you for this question/RANT!

Bummer - sounds like it

[ In Reply To ..]
I hate to say it, but it does sound like there's a reason for the high cpl. It didn't used to be high at 9 cpl, but these days it is. After you've spent all this time, though, it might be good for you to at least stay long enough to see if you like it. You might.

Thank you, I sure plan on it, I am not an easy quitter on anything. I have to just get more training for the system and all the VA rules, etc. Thanks for your reply!

Isn't it a federal law that VA work is paid hourly? - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
I know there was a discussion recently where an MTSO paid their MTs a low CPL for a VA account, were audited by the IRS, and the MTs got back wages.
va work - mtme
[ In Reply To ..]
There have been a couple of companies this has happened to. It's the DOL that did the audit and the ruling was that the MTSO must classify the workers as employees and pay the prevailing hourly wage as well as provide benefits.

That is one of the first things I asked and basically was told "oh, that's okay, we treat it like the other reports." I have never done VA work before, so I just "followed the leader." :(
Which they still are not doing. - anon16

They still are not doing any of that. I work there and have contacted the DOL multiple times, and nothing has changed. :(

Have they told you yet you can't use spellchecker. Their theory is there are too many incorrectly spelled words in the spellchecker so you just can't use it and you have to look EVERYTHING up.

PRN MT - Cynnamon

[ In Reply To ..]
Actually, they told me that both the spellchecker and the expander, it would be easy to use. But when proofing, I did notice that it really was not Proofing very well. Lots of demographics that you DO NOT get paid for, I find that very unfair if I have to input it!

What is this clunky, antiquated system called? - Curious. nm

I know, right???? I have used many systems, and recently I had some great systems that made it easy for you to make lines and do your work. This system is so antiquated it is amazing, I feel like I am back in the late 80s. They said it was a proprietary system----horrible! I don't think I will be making decent money any time soon, still looking around as I work.

Is this a company out of Ohio who uses their own proprietary system that requires you to have your own word expander? I started a company yesterday that you have to have your own word expander and their spellchecker is not the MS Word spellchecker. It just highlights the words.

[ In Reply To ..]
If this is the PRN out of Ohio, I worked there a couple of years back. It was radiology for the military, so we are talking something different. I did negotiate 9.5 cpl, however, and he went for it. It was a very simple platform with a spellchecker that worked, but I did have to have my own word expander program, which was fine with me since I had built up millions of words in the one I had anyway. I found them very easy and nice to work for. They left you alone to do your work and since it was IC status, if I just couldn't type anymore and quit for the day, they never said anything. I would hang in there for a bit and maybe a little later try to negotiate a bit higher line rate for the time taken for the demographics. Good luck!

Two PRNS? - me

One is P.R.N. Military - that is the one out of Ohio. There is another P.R.N. that is in a different state - which one are you talking about?

Thanks so much for the encouragement, luckily I am not a quitter until the bitter end!! To start, I have 9 cpl, but with all the information I have to put into all the demographics, it seems like less, I am used to automated demographics and being paid for headers and footers. You are right, you are truly a free IC, days, times, whatever, and they do let you do your work. But I feel like a duck out of water!!

Exactly!!! you cannot use your mouse, none of the MS Word stuff applies, you have to keep remembering all these hot key combinations and there are SO MANY. You have to proof each and every report because you cannot go on to another job without proofreading, even though it is going to QA. What's up????

You can still use your mouse - me

[ In Reply To ..]
The tab and ctrl key just make things easier to jump around in the report. I use the mouse - and the only demographics filled in are the patient name, DOB and MRN, date of visit. Some come up automatically, it depends on how the demographics are loaded per facility. If you are on the newer places just added, they are probably still getting the system set up. It took me awhile to learn some of the keys but I made a cheat sheat for those I would use a lot - like the glossary you can add to (I also have Shortcut for Windows and use mainly that) - now I average about 300 lines per hour - I was used to Bayscribe where you just got on and typed, so there is a learning curve for sure. Almost gave up a few times, but glad I didn't. Like anything new, learning takes time. We do it all our lives. And the people are fantastik to work with - nobody bothers you and QA is not punitive. And the pay and tiered bonus program is definitely one of the best around....the way I look at it, those who don't stick it out and quit, make more work for me to do and better income! Good luck to those who are giving it a try. I think you will be glad you did. As I said, been there since June 2011 and have checked other places, but P.R.N. is gold, in my eyes.
And P.S.... - me
[ In Reply To ..]
Why wouldn't you proofread a report whether it goes to QA or not? I'd rather catch my own mistakes than have them pointed out to me. Just my opinion.

Are you on the VA accounts?? No demographhics are populated, the MT does it all manually. The sound from those hospitals is horrendous, and I went out an bought an expensive pair of earphones. I have done this work for over 20 years and in my eyes, it is an albatros. You are right about the people.
Never had any trouble with the audio at all - me
[ In Reply To ..]
I work on CTVA and have done MMHS etc - along with some of the oncology/urology docs - my main forte is acute care, but a job is a job is a job and I have a good glossary built up. Are you on the NTVA? I haven't done that place yet, but on the CTVA, I put in the patient name etc, not a big deal to me. Give yourself a learning curve - it really is the best place out there in this day and age.
PRN - Cynnamon
[ In Reply To ..]
Hi!! God bless you, and I sincerely mean that! I am stuck on BOTH VA hospitals exclusively. I am working with Windows 7, which they were dubious of, preferred XPS. Anyway, the sound is horrible, and I even bought some very expensive earphones to see if it made a difference---no. Almost everyone is severly ESL, which I am usually great with, but with poor sound AND ESL, it is a major accomplishment. And if I have to put in all the patient demographics manually, THAT should be paid for. That brings their cpl count down quite a bit.

As I said, I graduated in 1983 from a technical college, have been doing transcription everywhere, this is so ridiculous for me that I don't want to be around long. Just my opinion. I have had multi-year jobs that I LOVED, so am hoping I can still find one (yeah right, in this day and age!!) :(

Hope you continue to be happy there and it is nice to talk to happy MTs, gives ya hope! :)
Cynnamon - me

Are you sure it's not the headphones? I just use the stethoscope type headset with the USB port and audio is fine. It doesn't make sense that it could be the audio if you are on CTVA - I also work that account and the sound quality is fine. Just a thought - do you have another headset you can try? Just because it's pricey doesn't mean it's better! :) Anyway, I too wanted to give up early on - but I stuck it out - and with the incentive bonuses you can make good money, much better money than anywhere else. I have looked at other places in the interim and always glad I didn't follow through, because there were horror stories about managers, QA, etc, no work and buy-outs. Give it 6 weeks minimum - then reevaluate. Just my 2 cents worth. We can't do comparisons because every company is different - what you don't get paid for in one spot, you get paid for in another - the way I look at it, if you have "normals" you have in your glossary at least you get paid for them. I know some places have QT lines where you get 1 cpl for those instead of your regular rate. Gotta be optimistic and pretend this is your first job and just try it out for awhile. Much luck to you - keep me posted. :)

PRODUCTION PAY
Nov 02, 2009

I would like to know how MTSO's get away with paying MTs and MT editors not hourly, not salary, but solely on how much they produce like they are working on an "assembly line"!!!  Being paid on how much one produces is "pathetic" and is not paying MTs/Editors based on their "knowledge, skill, or experience", and I think is an injustice to the medical transcription profession as a whole. What happens also when an MT/editor works over 40 hours per week.  By federal ...

Production Req'ts
Sep 06, 2012

Does the company you work for have production requirements?  I've never worked with any, but we were just informed that some are coming and that the industry standard is 150+ lines/hr.  I could do 150/hr on a good day, but if there are not a lot of reports available, it would be very hard.  Just looking for others who work with production req'ts and how you cope.  Thanks for your feedback. ...

Well, I'm Under The Gun For My Production.
Sep 14, 2012

I'm at stage 2 now. I've got a conference call for my verbal warning next week. Problem is - I have been in the 'cesspool' for months now. One day I (and apparently everyone else in my group) suddenly had next to no more work from my primary accounts. The account has very apparently gone overseas. Every once in a while 1 report will show up, so I am sure MM has not lost that account. I can see a lone job show up every once in a while in DQM. Since then, I have had no ...

QC Going To Production?
Feb 21, 2015

Is there a date set yet for when QC will be on production? My thought is, if they are going to this and do MLS work as well when no QC available, Nuance probably has to figure out some fancy grid work to figure their pay on this as well. Nuance still hiring like crazy, offering sign on bonuses, recruiting off different web sites, and then some of us sit with OOW, at least on the US only accounts. The last few weeks it has been VERY regular that we run into OOW.  Not even offered to w ...

Why Does It Always End Up Being About Production? SM
Mar 08, 2015

I have never been a top producer, but I have always been consistent and have excellent quality.  All the MTSOs say they want quality but it seems to inevitably come down to producing that line count, no matter what variables come into play, bad dictators, just a bad day, lots of short reports, etc.  All they want is that 250-260 lines edited per day.  I realize there have to be standards and goals but it just seems that in the past copule of years, especially when I worked for Nua ...

Why Is It When You Are Having A Great Production Day,
Jun 07, 2010

the work seems to disappear? I was doing over 400 lph and now no work. This happens every time I have great lph. Can companies do a switch-a-rooney, keeping the work away from people or can the platform be 'fixed' that if you hit a certain lph, no work will download to you? I'm really curious about this. I've been watching this happen for a couple months now. ...

Impossible To Keep Up Production

Production Employees (not IC's): How Much
Jul 13, 2010

The compensation structure and "minimum" hourly or daily production expectations often encourage people in our industry to work unreported hours in order to meet minimums.  You have a day when you get a rash of the account's most trying dictators, for instance, and at the end of 8 hours you realize that you haven't met minimums...so you work another hour, while reporting only the 8 hours. Transcription companies are, of course, aware of this dirty little secret and do nothing abo ...

Low Production Due To IT Issues

Production Scrutiny
Dec 02, 2010

For the life of me I cannot figure out how they justify the manhours being spent to see if we are typing all 60 minutes of each hour without bathroom or snack breaks when we are not paid by the hour.  If we are not typing for 5 or 6 minutes here and there, we are not producing, thus not getting paid line rate.  It only hurts us so why do they even care?  Am I totally stupid?  It affects our benefit rate, still only hurting us.  The only benefit left for this company ...

What Are Your Production Tips?
