Curiously, is anybody noticing that job ads are - ToolongMT

Posted: Jan 30, 2013

offering "Independent contractor" positions for what they used to pay for employee status or less.  I have been watching the boards for job ads and don't even want to look at IC positions (not cut out for being responsible for my own taxes and need insurance, etc.) and guess what more and more of them are IC jobs.

Hmmmmm...this makes me think this if getting even worse than I thought it was.  I suspect they now want us to work full-time as independent contractors so they don't have to give us insurance or pay half out SS, and can pay us less while most still require set hours even for IC.  What is wrong with this picture.

It just keeps getting worse and worse-I fear there is no hope anymore in this line of work.  Cry

Yes, I am noticing this exact same thing too. I just lost a job end of December where I was making good pay, and now I am starting out less as an IC than I was 7 years ago. I see the pay going down, just as you say with IC pay being at what employee pay used to start out at. No, I don't see a future for this kind of work either.

These greedy MTSOs want to pay 3-4 cpl as - just say no

an IC doing ESL accounts too.

I hear you, same boat here - me

Yup, McDonald's wages that is if your lucky and have work available. I used to love my job, now I hate it and wish I would have studied something else. Funny to think I paid and went to college to make 5 dollars an hour. Lord help us all. Crap wages, crap jobs, crap companies, got my 1099 and wanted to cry.

Agreed... 22 years of education & dedication down the drain - Sad and too old now

I too paid good money to go to transcription school then spent more money getting my CMT, but 22 years later, I could make more money working the drive-thru at McDonalds. I've held administrative (hourly & salaried) jobs and just recently went back to just working as an MT because no one will give me the schedule I need - which is when my kids are in school - unless I work as an IC doing MT work.

All that time spent learning and perfecting my skills down the drain, because these companies are hiring uneducated and inexperienced people off the street to do what I worked so hard to become so good at doing. Honestly, we should all take a stand and sue the entire business as a whole. They are getting away with murder.

Unfortunately, there's always a slew of idiots that will work for chicken scratch - which is why these jerks stay in business.

IC versus employee - Be Smart

Honestly, it is worse than you imagine in many ways.

However, let me tell you that they want to hire you as an IC, but according to labor laws, they are actually misclassifying you. They hire you as an IC. They then tell you how to work (the specs), when to work (even if it is a ball park time), and they offer you their equipment to work (the platform). ICs would do the work as they want, when they want, using their own tools. When a company tells you how, when, and with what to work with...you should be classified as an employee. SO, take the IC job, but remember one thing...they may not have insurance...but you CAN collect unemployment from them, then report them to fair labor that they have you misclassified.

Seriously, everyone should just go out and - sm

apply to outside jobs, no matter what it is. Really, home transcription is dead as we knew it. They don't want to pay us for our expertise, it's all just a racket, big $$ for the corps, nothing for the knowledgeable "workers." We've evolved into working in the same low-pay medical jobs such as CNAs and medical assistants, except that now the CNAs and MAs are making steady wages at their jobs and making more money than home MTs. It's time to throw in the towel. It's not going to get any better. Stick a fork in it, home transcription is dead as far as being a viable profession anymore. It's over.

There are very few "outside jobs" out there but - blue

I agree with everything else you mentioned.

easier said than done - just try it

I put in dozens of resumes and only got 3 interviews, which came to nothing.

It is not only medical transcription at home that is dead, it is on site as well, my on site job went to India, I had been there 18 years. I went on at least 8 non-MT interviews before I found another job, and I took a pay cut. For the person implying that we have been reduced to the level of a "lowly" MA, you've obviously never done that job. Getting out of MT and starting over is not going to be easy for most people, but it is probably worth making the effort if you need job stability.
All well said. It is all outsourced and dead-end. - anon

After putting in a lifetime and enjoying the work...you are absolutely correct...hard to start over...not easy, let alone now in this economy. Nobody wants the older employee, let alone without a degree. Who could afford a degree on 3-4 cpl or even 8...not me.

Has Anyone Else Been Noticing . . . .

or is it just me that the dictators are starting to actually SPELL things?  I mean things like gastritis.  Is this (maybe) a positive to sending the reports right to the client in that the docs are not happy with the blanks?  i dunno but have had several jobs this morning with words being spelled out.  ...

Anyone Else Noticing This

I work solely in oncology and noticing more and more people asking for holistic, naturopathic-type treatments for their cancer and refusing chemotherapy, radiation and surgery. They are hitting the brick wall of "There are not enough study data to support the notion that nutrition and/or supplements can combat cancer." With so much information on the web supporting how nutrition can prevent and even reverse some cancers, you would think the medical industry would take notice and maybe starti ...

Anyone Else Noticing That VR Is Suddenly Capitalizing

wasn't capping before?  WTH?  Is this just another sneaky way to catch us on medication errors, which happen to be nice 3-points-off errors that I am sure they love?  I suggest everyone double check all meds now, even though it takes extra time.  I myself do know which are or are not capped for a lot of meds, but not all of them, and it is very easy to let one slip....I think I let one slip on my last report!  Waiting for the email telling me I failed and then the h ...

Anyone Else Noticing More Arbitrary Red Headings Inserted By ASR?

I'm seeing TIME SEEN, LABORATORY FINDINGS, PLAN, MEDICATIONS even with what is actually said does not even come close to that.  As well, it seems that if it is close, it puts in a red heading.  Example:...  BY THE TIME I SEE THE PT.  Usually ends up to be something like ...by the.  </TIME SEEN/> The patient is blah, blah, blah   Or am I just imagining things?  Which would probably be a good thing since the alternative reality (ASR) is pret ...

Been Noticing Major Decrease In Work Volumes In West
