Much too low. - wordie Posted: Jan 5th, 2017 - 10:38 am In Reply to: Has anyone ever tried General Transcription jobs - curious
If you are paid less than $1 per audio minute (about $55 to $60 per audio hour), you are being ripped off. It takes 3 to 4 hours to transcribe 1 hour of audio, and that is when you are familiar with the account. It can take even longer, even an extra hour or so, when there is a lot of research, poor audio quality, multiple unclear speakers, an unfamiliar account, or a requirement for an audio proof, meaning relistening to the whole recording while proofreading. At 40 cents per audio minute that is only $24 for minimum of 3 to 4 hours of work, or $8 an hour if you're very lucky, but more like $6 per hour or quite a bit less on average. And since most of this work is IC, your tax burden on that tiny amount is high. Don't let them rip you off. These are slave wages.
