started coding at 58 - anon MT 2 coder Posted: Nov 20th, 2016 - 6:52 am In Reply to: at age 56 - newbie at coding? - Reality Check
I got a job 2 years ago with just my CPT, since then I have also added CCS and CPMA to my credentials. I think it is harder now than 2 years ago when we were facing ICD 10 and they needed extra coders. I attended monthly AAPC meetings and networked to find a job. I also needed to have major tweaking to my resume. It took a lot of persistence, but for me it paid off. I have a regular 9-5 job with paid holidays, good benefits, and I am so glad I changed. I didn't feel my age was a factor. The job market does seem to be harder now as many have entered coding and there is a LOT to learn on the job that isn't taught in any of the schools (constantly changing regulations/learning their EMR, etc) so you need to shine in your interview to get the job. Good luck.
