If every word that - could Posted: Sep 20th, 2016 - 12:36 pm In Reply to: word help - Kari
be formed legitimately by the standard rules of English could only be considered a word if it appeared in a dictionary, English-language dictionaries would run to dozens of volumes.
Adding a standard prefix or suffix to a standard word makes a new word, and that new word is a real word.
Languages grow and evolve over time, and standard usage usually outpaces dictionary publication schedules. This is why it is important to know the acceptable methods of forming words with prefixes, suffixes, infixes, and even new word roots so that one is not baffled by the appearance of a new yet perfectly legitimate, properly formed word or unable to express an idea due to not knowing how to form the word that is needed.
