Shorthand used to have a free trial download available. Don't know if it still does. InstantText (http://www.fitaly.com/product/it7product.htm) has a 30-day money back with no questions guarantee, and they do absolutely honor it.
Shorthand and InstantText have different displays and work differently. In my experience, some people's minds work better with one and some better with the other. The choice is between those two for a professional expander capable of dealing with problems like yours, and if possible, you should give them both a try before deciding which to buy.
