As I recall, telephone operators made a very good living too, before those jobs became defunct.
The same could be said for construction workers, who were well trained in their respective craft(s) and paid commensurately (think 1970s-1980s). Today those poor guys have been replaced by foreign workers, mostly Mexican illegal aliens, and can barely get a job, and if they can they are paid peanuts.
What you wrote about the great money we made "back in the day" reminded me of the three instances above. Looks like a pattern to me...
