Is it nontoxic-appaering or nontoxic appearing..... hyphen or no hyphen???

nontoxic appearing or nontoxic-appearing - oldmt

If it is "nontoxic appearing" alone with no noun after, as in "The patient is nontoxic appearing," no hypen.

If a noun follows, such as, "He is a nontoxic-appearing patient," then include the hyphen. Hope this helps!

Here is an example... - hab

General: Alert, no apparent distress noted. Nontoxic appearing.

That is how my boss has it in the template but, personally, i think it should be like this..... (because all of these are implying the "patient" even though the noun is not actually there.

General: Alert, no apparent distress noted, nontoxic-appearing.

hyphens - MT

That's how I feel about it. I use a hyphen with the word appearing but I don't use a hyphen if it is something like "The patient is well developed, well nourished." Is there a formal rule on this?

Nontoxic-appearing is a compound modifier - Depends

If a noun comes after it, the dash is between them: "Nontoxic-appearing patient."

If not, no dash: "The patient is nontoxic appearing."
