improper use of plural?? - Silverfox

Posted: Apr 08, 2014

Please help: What is the correct use of the word paresthesia? Is there a

proper plural to this word? I see different things in different dictionaries.

I am a VR transcriptionist, and many of my providers use paresthesias when

referring to a single area of the body. Comments appreciated.

Paresthesia: He developed paresthesia over the last year.

Paresthesias: He often experiences paresthesias, sometimes in the form of a burning sensation, but usually pins and needles.

I am not sure what the problem is with paresthesias. The word has been in common use for decades and everyone understands what it means. What else would you use?

I would just transcribe what they say in the style they say it.

When I'm certain and can be bothered I "correct" ... most of the time, now, after months of this, I just type what they say -- which does bug me, but if they don't care ...
