Plural or singular? - Onyn

Posted: Jun 26, 2012

QA changed "bilateral upper extremities radiculopathy" to "bilateral upper extremity radiculopathy"

Shouldn't it be "extremities" since bilateral is plural? I know it's easier to SAY "bilateral upper extremity radiculopathy" but isn't that grammatically incorrect?

Sorry, I agree with QA on this one. - nm

I don't mind if you agree with QA, I just don't understand the reasoning behind it. - Onyn

What is the reason that it is singular and not plural?

I'm not one of those people that bash QA, I just honestly have a question how this is decided.

Singular/plural - sm

BOS, page 182: Bilateral is an adjective that may modify either a plural or a singular noun, depending on the meaning.

Bilateral upper extremity radiculopathy (one condition that is present in both extremities at the same time). Just like bilateral extremity (not extremities) edema. HTH!
Thank you! - Onyn

Thanks for that! I'm assuming you're referring to BOS3, as it's on page 38 in mine (BOS2). Didn't dawn on me to even look in there, LOL.

Easier to remember the correct way when I know WHY.

Thanks again!
You're welcome. Glad to help! - nm
