Quick grammar question - two plurals in a row? - ddyy

Posted: Dec 03, 2010

this doesn't sound right to me, but I can't think of the correct way to type this sentence:

....until diagnostic tests results are complete....

"tests results" doesn't look right. Dictator is referring to multiple tests, not "test's results". I am not sure... any help appreciated.

context - see message

You will have to decide from the context if they mean:

"diagnostic tests' results" or
"diagnostic tests/results".

Otherwise, it could be restated: "diagnostic test results".

I am pretty sure what is meant is.... - ddyy

the results to multiple tests. So, what would the corret wording for that be? I am pretty sure it is not tests' results, because if the sentence were recast with a single test, it would not be test's results, it would just be test results.

My opinion – “results are” already implies multiple tests, therefore you do not need the “s” on test.  If it were a single test it would read:  ....until diagnostic test result is complete....

I would type it:

....until diagnostic test results are complete....

Or, if it is not verbatim:

....until all diagnostic test results are complete....

I am sure other people may have been taught differently.  Just my opinion.  Someone else may do it differently.  Grammar can be a subjective thing sometimes – it changes with the generations.  I am old school.  LOL

test results - me

results - .

I agree that OP should type "diagnostic test results".

However, I don't agree that "results are" implies multiple tests in any way.

We always hear "I will obtain CT results"; "we will review the echo results"; "we have the results of her x-ray". This is how it is always said, even though it is a single test.
