High dose rate brachytherapy - Grace

[ In Reply To ..]
This probably is not going to help much, but I have used high-dose-rate, high-dose rate, high dose rate,High Dose Rate and HDR, depending on the doctor's preference. Most places love the abbreviations for $ reasons, so most I've typed for use HDR. Do you have any guidelines provided to you by your company? I've noticed most of my clients do not like hyphens--REALLY do not like hyphens! I wish I knew why.

high-dose-rate is - my preference

When in doubt, though, I think "high dose rate" - without any hyphens - is not inappropriate.

they each mean different things. - deenibeeni

It's correct to use both hyphens in this case, as "high-dose-rate" is the adjective phrase that modifies "brachytherapy." If you say "high-dose rate brachytherapy," then you are saying there is an entity called "rate brachytherapy" and the patient is being given the high-dose type. All that said, there are times I don't use hyphens at all, like for "small bowel." I was on another board once where an MT who had done GI for years gave the best argument I'd heard for not using them, which was: It's always understood that for the phrase "small bowel resection," we know it's a small bowel and not a small resection. No one is ever going to talk about a bowel resection without saying which one it is, large or small. So we can assume the "large" or "small" is tied to "bowel." So the hyphens aren't needed because there won't be any confusion. That made sense to me, & I quit using them that day.

First Time Right - CPL Being Decreased If The QA Submission Rate Is Too High
Mar 07, 2010

Pristiq Dose 2 - 25 Mg Daily Or 225 Mg?
Aug 02, 2011

Hey all, I am trying to figure out if Pristiq can be dosed at 225 mg?  The website I use for dosing doesn't say that.  The doctor says, "two twenty-five mg daily."  He doesn't say two hundred and twenty-five mg daily.  However, I see that Pristiq comes in 50 mg, so if the dose was 50 mg why would he say 2 - 25 mg?  LOL!  Just checking to see if anyone has an idea. Thanks, Chris ...
