VR do not accept 3 cents!!! people - MT

Posted: Dec 03, 2009

MTs out there..do not accept a job for VR on 3 cents a line. These companies are trying to rake you over the coals!   The benchmark was set by Escription at 4 cents a line when they came out with the software and now these companies are trying to lower the bar!!  Do not accept this!  These are the companies that offered 7 cents a line for straight typing instead of 9 or 10.

3 cents - bizzy

I second that! We need to refuse to take crud pay for our good work! You may be surprised. I was able to negotiate a cpl price that my company was willing to give me! We're both happy. They keep me (experienced and highly qualified, certified and self-glorified! heehee) and they get quality reports.

DON'T SELL YOURSELF SHORT! Like Loreal tells us "WE ARE WORTH IT"!

Who or what is 'Loreal?'???...nm - n.i.

Cant afford L'Oreal products on an MTs pay - - its Clairol or peroxide for me. n/m

Agree. As soon as good MTs start to wander away from MTing...sm - mte

The cheapskates will start to get the message. It happened with nurses and it will happen with us...again....remember the late 70s when it happened...or perhaps I am the oldest MT around! LOL!

I have seen people wanting to work so much that - they have advertised their working for

[ In Reply To ..]
free just to get a foot in the door. What makes you think that a newbie out there just desperate for a job, any job, would not take this at 3 cpl? I totally agree. I did the math and 4 cpl is ok with me but go to 3 and it is really trending downwards.

Well, the poster said 'good' MTs - NewbsAreUntested

[ In Reply To ..]
That's not to say that they are not some really good newbies, but statistically speaking, there aren't that many ready "graduating" ready to hit the ground running. Newbies doing VR makes me think of the saying "the blind leading the blind." Most (not all) newbs just lack the fund of knowledge necessary to know whether VR is using the right word or not. They may eventually get there, although I think it will take longer in a VR world than it would a transcription world, but there's going to be some rough going for a while were a company to rely predominantly on newbie editors. So they may be able to fill our chairs, but I don't think they're that easily able to fill our shoes.

4 cpl? Are you kidding me? Even if I lived with my - parents rent-free, that wouldnt be enough.

[ In Reply To ..]
Flipping burgers at Mickey-D's pays better than that, and I would imagine they give their workers far more respect.
I am SO glad I am doing VR today, would hate to think - I had all these ESLs to straight type
[ In Reply To ..]
By the end of the day I should rack up about $180 for the 8 hours and frankly so very glad I did not have to spend my Saturday listening to every single ESL on the planet and not having VR to decipher what the heck they are trying to say. Good for you for wanting to do straight and good for me in scoring with VR.

Im about your same vintage. In the late 70s I walked - in unannounced to 4 different hospitals -SM-

[ In Reply To ..]
in one day, and got 4 offers on the spot. The 2 offering the highest pay then began bidding against each other for my services.

Those were the days. So far, the 21st Century totally blows!

I'm one of those "good" MTs and I would never work for that - see msg

[ In Reply To ..]
I've been in this business for over 30 years, and yes I am one of the best MTs out there. There is not a work type, specialty, or ESL accent that I cannot do (and do it well).

I would never accept 3 cpl, and I won't even accept 4 cpl. Yes, I've done VR and the cut in pay is simply not compensated by the increase in productivity.

I honestly think that this push toward all VR editing along with the lower pay is going to come back and bite these companies in the you-know-what one of these days.

MTs like me are not easy to come by. And from what I have been seeing, MTs like me are beginning to leave this business altogether.

And eventually, all that's going to be left are the newbie MTs and the offshore MTs, neither of which have the extensive knowledge that it takes. And when the physicians start screaming after a few malpractice suits, that's when I think that you'll start to see these companies starting to respect the MTs more, enough to start appropriately compensating us again for our vast knowledge and expertise.

Did you break your arm patting yourself on the - back, golly!

[ In Reply To ..]
A person can make a decent living, know hard to believe, at 4 cpl but they have to be extremely fast in editing. The pay is probably more than I made per day straight typing and I was extremely fast then and faster now with VR.

Nope, didn't break my arm, just stating the truth of the matter - nm

[ In Reply To ..]
Now, can we try to keep management and the suits off this board?

I don't think she was "patting" herself sm - Oh brother

[ In Reply To ..]
on the back, I think she was just stating the facts. As one who has been doing this 30+ years as well, I truly believe that experience counts for a lot. Unfortunately, in today's world, all anyone thinks about is the bottom line. People just don't seem to respect experience anymore. I used to train newbies back in the day, and my philosophy was that you should do the best you possibly could, take the time to produce a quality report, and be proud of your work. It seems the only thing that counts now is how many lines you can produce in the shortest amount of time. I know things have changed, and I struggle with this now.

Agree - they will be sorry they pushed us up against the wall - mte

[ In Reply To ..]
and insulted our extensive experience.

By your statement, just what will they be sorry for - and what are you talking about in late 70s?

[ In Reply To ..]
I was working back then in transcription and don̢۪t have a clue what you are talking about. How is our experience insulted?
Perhaps by thinking experienced MTs will be satisfied with making minimum wage? - Not a chance!!!
[ In Reply To ..]
If you are an MT who, as you say, has been in this business since the 1970s, don't you feel that perhaps your level of experience and expertise is being disrespected by these companies who seem to think that we will accept 3 or 4 cpl and be satisfied with making minimum wage?

Personally, I think that you must be in management. Because if you were truly an MT down in the trenches like the rest of us, I think you would understand what our concerns are.
If I were management, I probably would have more to do - than post on this board
[ In Reply To ..]
I do not feel disrespected first of all with the company I work for now. I do my work, they send my check, hardly hear from QA so what should a person feel disrespected about? I do VR and absolutely love it. I do some straight and now dislike it quite a bit because my VR is a good platform and frankly just would rather do. Oh, I do VR for 4 cents a line and I make as much now as when working inhouse with base pay and production. Go ahead and think management. That seems to be the standard statement when no one can think of anything else to call you.
If you are management, posting on this board is a priority - see msg
[ In Reply To ..]
If you are the MT you say you are, who has been in this business since the 1970s, then I don't know why you would be happy with VR earnings at 4 cpl. Unless perhaps there are extenuating circumstances, like carpal tunnel maybe?

My company paid me 6.5 cpl for VR and it still worked out to be a huge pay cut for me.

However, if you are really are management posing yourself as "an MT" (and we all know that management keeps close tabs on this board), it would be imperative for you to try to help "sell" how wonderful VR is and how much more (or at least the same) money an MT can make by doing VR.

And I'm sorry, but I'm just not buying it. With over 30 years in this business, I've been there, I've done it, and am friends with many other MTs who have tried it too. And VR is not beneficial to the MTs in any form (except maybe in a case of carpal tunnel). 9 out of 10 of the MTs out there make LESS on VR than they do with straight typing.

I think part of the problem is that management and MTSOs are finding that the very experienced MTs will not do VR for 4 cpl. And if they do happen to accept a job for that, they won't stay.

And part of the MTSOs marketing with their clients is boasting that "our MTs have an average of 20 years of experience." But without the 20+ and 30+ year veterans, the MTSOs can't bring that "average" up or maintain it.

So yes, if you are management, it is very important for you to post on this board.

And if you are an MT, especially one since the 1970s, you should be able to understand what we're talking about here and what our concerns are.
You and others might have concerns and some cannot do or - do not wish to do VR
[ In Reply To ..]
But I hate to transcribe the old way now. I have no issues such as carpal tunnel syndrome, knocking on wood but I have an excellent platform and making more now than I did with straight. What others do in their jobs is their business. If management I would be trying to post my name of company and the platform I use. I do neither because I dont care if you use VR or who you work for, not an interest of mine. Some people are just NOT cut out to do VR. There are many types of VR out there. I have only worked on 1, know nothing about the others so to call someone management just because they happen to love and make a good living is just idiotic.
I'm glad you're happy with VR - but not everbody is
[ In Reply To ..]
No, if you were management, you would be sure NOT to post your company's name or the VR system that you (your MTs) use, because that would be a dead giveaway.

Nevertheless, as I said previously, 9 out of 10 MTs are making LESS money by doing VR work. I'm truly glad if you are an MT who is able to make more money at 4 cpl than you did before. But, VR experiences such as this are very, very rare indeed.
In that case, really does no one any good to talk for or - against, now does it?
[ In Reply To ..]
Transcribing today I have been able to just sit and have the work fly by. I am really glad that I have something like this now in my older years. I probably would never be working with straight typing with all the ESLs on board. What a headache and not something I would want to transcribe. VR keeps me halfway sane. I think it is easy money if you have a good system and good work you enjoy doing. I know there are people who hate VR and make less. I think if they ever went with a good platform they would not believe just how good it can be. I don̢۪t believe in posting where I work and don̢۪t tell what I work on, better that way.
Yes, it is GOOD to talk about it - see msg
[ In Reply To ..]
You are apparantly one of the very few MTs who says you can actually make more money at 4 cpl on VR.

But, the problem is this: The MTSOs are trying to push VR by talking about just how good VR is and how much easier it is to make more money than ever before, even at 3 or 4 cpl.

And that is simply NOT the case with the majority of the MTs.

The MTSOs talk about all of these supposed MTs of theirs who are "making more money with VR than ever" and it's almost like a carrot that they dangle in front of the MT's nose. So, then the majority of MTs who do NOT make more money with the pay cut on VR are left thinking that "there must be something wrong with me."

So, that is why it's important to discuss things like this. Because we've got way too many MTs out there who are on VR now and who are barely making enough money to pay their bills, and yet the MTSO's are making it out to be that "it's just them."

Of course there are many variables and a lot depends on the particular VR system and a lot depends on what type of dictators and what type of work types the MTSO's put on their VR system. Some of these physicians and work types simply should not be on VR. But unfortunately, the MTSO's try to put them all there anyway. Why? Because they can pay their MTs less, and pocket a greater profit margin for their company, while the MT is the one who is left to suffer and made to feel like it is "their fault" and that they are "one of the only ones" who just can't make it on VR. And THAT is simply not true.

Doing VR work is nothing like transcription. All the MT is using is his/her knowledge, but the skills set needed for VR, the mentality (brain drain is what I call it), and flow of work is completely different from traditional transcription.

So what these MTSO's actually want is an editing clerk, at a minimum wage clerk's pay, but with the extensive medical knowledge at the same time.
I really wished it worked like you think it does, not - having to use my brain. People who do VR think
[ In Reply To ..]
it is harder. I think most have this idea, think you can put on auto and just pass on through. I have transcribed for 30+ years and call it what you want, I just am completely satisfied with the work the way it is now. Editing clerk, typer, no knowledge or lack of it in order to even want to do, oh well I guess it takes all kinds. Happy camper here. I think it is a piece of cake, even with all those drat nonEnglish speaking folks we have. Out to dinner, have a nice evening!
Now I know you're a suit - LOL
[ In Reply To ..]
A suit posing as an MT. As they say, it takes one to know one. LOL

Did you actually read what I said, or did you read into it just what you "wanted" to hear.

Go back and read it again. I never said VR work doesn't require knowledge. To the contrary, "brain drain" refers to the MT having a VAST amount of medical knowledge, which the MTSO's both want and need.

And the problem is that they only want to pay a minimum wage editing clerk's salary in order to get it.

Then they dangle these carrots in front of the MT's noses, "If you just try harder, you can do this too. You can make more money on VR than you ever thought possible."

And that, my dear, is what the problem is.
I probably did not read as I should have, I am tired - my eyes are tired, will read again
[ In Reply To ..]
tomorrow when I am more rested. I was never told by MTSO could make more. Representative of the company came to the hospital where I worked and we were told we could double our line count. I did not know what an MTSO was until about 4 years ago. I was always a hospital employee for the last 30 years or more. Ok, I will be a suit, don̢۪t care what others think, they think what they want anyway. I don̢۪t know what a clerk makes but I am glad to average over twenty dollars an hour, ok for me at this time in my life.
