Questions to Kindle owners - NJMT

Posted: May 24, 2011

I am thinking of getting a Kindle.   I would like to hear opinions of Kindle owners before I make the purchase and I also have a few questions.

1.  Do you have to buy books just from the Amazon site or are there other sites that you can get e-books from?

2.  What other features does the Kindle have or can you just read books/papers/magazines on it?

I am not sure I am ready to give up my books for an e-reader.   Any other input would be greatly appreciated.

At the time I got it, the Kindle was restricted to just Amazon. It's my understanding that that is going to change at some point soon.

With the Nook, however, the only place you CAN'T get books is Amazon. You can, however, get them from B and N, Sony, Kobo, Baen, Fictionwise, AND the public library.

Also, with the Nook, the on-board battery is user-replaceable (you have to send in the Kindle), and you can add an extra memory card to the Nook (which I have not yet had to do).

So, for me, there was no choice at all; the Nook won hands-down.

There's a new model Nook coming out in the next couple of weeks, which will NOT have a user-replaceable battery.

This means there should be good close-out deals on the existing stock of the Nook Classic wi-fi and 3G models.

Did a lot of research - chose Nook

Have the Nook color with wi-fi model. Love it. It's more like a tablet than just a reader. I recharge the battery, have had no need to replace it.

I received a Kindle for my birthday, and I love it.

You can buy books only from Amazon. A book downloads in seconds.

I like being able to change the font to something larger so I don't have to use my reading glasses.

I have internet access on mine but haven't had a need to use it.

The only problem I have is that when I'm reading a mystery it's too much trouble to look ahead and find out what happens so I can stop reading and go to bed. :)

It's more convenient to take for appointments than a book. I also love that when you turn it on it immediately goes to the page you're on in the book.

Nook does all those things... and more :) - NM

I have had my Kindle for 3 years. I did a lot of research b/c I spent a lot of money on it. Amazon is top notch. You might be able to shop at different places with the Nook, but why is that? Perhaps b/c you cannot find everything at B&N. I have never not been able to find what I'm looking for at Amazon, and I read many independent and first-time authors.

Replacing batteries? I haven't had to do this. Just recharge.

Yes, you will miss books. I did and still do pick up a library book now and then, but I save a lot of money b/c Kindle books (as probably Nook, too) are 1/2 price as store bought books. I bought my Kindle for environmental purposes also.

They probably serve the purpose of reading equally, the Nook and Kindle. I just like dealing with Amazon.

Who Are The Owners Of This Web Site?
Jan 17, 2015

It's good that the moderators are aware at how much they suck at their jobs. (See the post below.)  But I'm genuinely curious about who owns this web site. Owner, are you a former or current MT?  Do you live in the U.S. or a foregin country?  Moderators, how about yourselves?  Are you former or current MTs?  Do you live in the U.S.?  If you're not willing to answer these questions, why is that?   Why not admit you're not MTs?  Wh ...
