Problem with external drive - Anita

HI,

I need help and how. I work on production and cannot afford to be down at all.

I have a HP Pavilion Desktop, XP software, and a West. Digital external drive--My Book Essential 2.0 which is barely 6 mons. old.

About 2 wks. ago, the power tray in the computer failed and was replaced. He fixed that, returned it, and the computer worked just fine.

It failed again 1 wk. to 2 wks. later. The tech said the wiring/cords inside were all twisted up. No one touches or has access to this machine but me. Nothing unusual occurred when I re-connected it, set it back in its usual place, and fired it up. And, in case you're wondering, I do trust this tech.

The external drive (L drive) powered up with its blue light, but it was not recognized at all by the computer; the L drive wasn't even listed in the "My Computer" folder. The WD specs give an order in which to install the drive (e.g., when to install the data cord, the power cord, etc.) which I've done times with no effect and now the drive won't even power up.

That L drive has my work templates on it and I'm sitting here sweating the rent and other bills and trying to not panic or lose control. Any clues as to what to do next besides fry this sucker in a microwave, shot it, and/or cap it with a baseball bat?

It sounds as if the external drive may be the problem and something is shorting out your computer. Since you have an HP Pavilion, I know that it has its own hard drive. why on earth would you not have put your templates and working materials on the existing drive and used the external only for a back up in case the existing went wrong. This is what I do. Always have a backup if something major fails. I feel for you. I have been in your shoes before, but it really sounds like the external drive is fried and why it took out your power supply the first time. If the computer will not even recognize it, there is something wrong. I wish I could be more helpful and tell you all will be okay, but it sounds like you may have lost some information and will be down for a few days because of it. My thoughts are with you.

Certainly, I don't know the details of your computer setup or anything. But, I was so nervous about only having one working computer on which to depend that I went looking for another as a backup. I actually found a pretty good deal at one of the more popular online auctions, the name of which I hesitate to mention here for fear that it is against the rules. Anyway, I purchased a 1 GB RAM computer that came with Windows XP. With shipping it was only $89. I had to then add Office 2003, which I purchased online for $46. I often use both computers and use a jump drive to move documents between the two computers. We tried an external hard drive and didn't like that option; it did not want to work with either of my computers for some unknown reason..

I just thought I'd share in case this information is of any use to you at all. I understand your frustration and panic. Best to you.

past medical history: prostrate cancer treated with external beam radiation. Sentence in question: PSA on Nilandron 150 mg daily has been eleveated but stable with last PSA s/l "of his" 4.8. I inserted Stedman's Medical Dictionary CD into D drive. Message came up that said "you have no disk in D drive", so I clicked the button to remove it, but no disk was there. I did not put this disk away and is nowhere to be found. OK, here's the scoop. My old computer is 10-years old and has given me a blue screen 3 times when I am in AOL only. My computer guy has suggested a rebuilt computer with XP cause that's what I need, or a new computer with a partitioned hard drive. Does anyone have an opinion on this? Does anyone have a .spf file that they could "loan me" until I either find my flash drive or I build my own up (could take years like my original one did!)?
