Word capitalization issue - orianna

Posted: Nov 13, 2010

Hello! For some reason, my Word XP is capitalizing after a month typed out, i.e. January. I can't seem to find where to change that setting. Help please!! Thank you, Kelly

Don't understand your question. - NM

So, January of 2010 would look like January Of 2010, right?

Why would you even transcribe "of" ? Just type Jan 2010. nm - oldtimer

I'm not sure that's what it is. I'm just trying to understand the question. I think it's more of a computer glitch question than the proper way to punctuate after spelling out the name of a month.

There is not need to type "of" it is just January 2010. - NM

I was referring to a sentence like this:

The patient was to return in January but failed to do so.

My system capitalizes the "b" it but. Understand now?

Have you tried using the Exceptions part of AutoCorrect - Just a thought

[ In Reply To ..]

I may or may not be able to help you, but here goes.

I do not know why MS Word is capitalizing the first letter of the word following months.  It is probably an AutoCorrect glitch.

If it is only happening with months (January, February, etc), then maybe you can do a work-around in AutoCorrect until you figure out why it is doing that, in the first place.

If you go to AutoCorrect, there is a tab called “Exceptions…”  There, you can type in words that you DO NOT want the first letter of the word following capitalized.  If it is a glitch with AutoCorrect, you just have to type in each month (luckily there are only 12) in the DO NOT section and that should solve the problem.

If that does not work, sorry, I really have no clue what else it could be.

Sorry I could not have been of more help, but at least I tried.

Thank you soo much! It worked and I have no idea how it every got that way. This program has been around for ages with a lot of different hands into it, so who knows! But thank you...it was quite a nuisance!

Don't cap after a word in Exceptions only works when there is a period after - s/m

the word. I have the months in my Instant Text so I don't have to deal with what Word thinks it should do for me.

You could put jan in AC to expand to January with the spacebar and you won't get the cap.

As it is possible to inadvertently put things in autocorrect, one thing more thing you could check is autocorrect (and check autotext too) and see if you didn't unwittingly put in an entry that automatically caps the word "of." In any case, if your client says "November of 2009" rather than just "November 2009" go ahead and do so. (Criticizing you for this is not exactly what I would call a helpful solution that would solve your problem -- I am an old timer too, by the way, about 30 years.)

2007 changed AC. Hit F3 instead of enter and you won't get the cap on next word. - NM

Capitalization - Department Is Used As An Entity
Aug 30, 2011

I have always been under the impression that when a department is used as an entity, such as "The patient was seen by the Pulmonary Department," that it would be capitalized.  If it were "The patient was seen in the pulmonary department," it would not be capitalized.  This is to denote that in the first example, the patient was actually seen by a person, not by the department itself (a thing).  I think this is an important distinction for clarity.  The account I am on is saying that pulmo ...
