Another nifty Shorthand trick - CrankyOldBroadOnTheBeach

Posted: Nov 11, 2009

Elsewhere, someone just suggested that you can use it to pop up reminders to yourself on the screen. I've been hauling around a little green loose-leaf notebook since about 1976, with words and phrases I had/have trouble remembering. Many of the words in it have been made long-since obsolete because now we have spell-check. But there are still any number of things that it might be hard to remember all the time. For instance... I had to write down what the numbers after gravida and para mean, because I can never keep them straight. So I just made a new entry in Shorthand. The keyword is ggpp (your mileage may vary) and when I type that, here's what pops up in the little reminder screen: {@REM term births/preterm births/induced abortion or miscarriage/living children} The @REM in brackets means that whatever is within the brackets will NOT expand; in this case, the entire phrase. But if I need to know what the gravida-para numbers mean, now, all I have to do is type ggpp, instead of reaching for the little green book and flipping through it. I added a {@KEY BkSp} command to the end of the above, so that when I type ggpp I will see the above text, and when I hit the space bar to expand, it will backspace one, so that puts my cursor right back where it started. Clear as mud? A trick like this can also be used to remind oneself of the places where Roman versus Arabic numerals are to be used; such as stage 4 chronic kidney disease (Arabic numeral) as opposed to stage IV cancer (Roman). Some of those I can remember; others, I can't. Who's got another idea to share?

Thanks! will change your great idea to - Jane

EditScript Trick

This is new to me, so I apologize if its not new to you, but figured this was worth posting. I found out by chance a couple days ago that if you press the CNTL key and scroll up or down with the mouse that it increases/decreased the size of the text on the screen without affecting the final document as far as changing font size, etc.  I use ES 9 most of the time, so not sure if it works for ES 11 or other versions, but worth a try.  I work on a 17 inch monitor and the type was small a ...

Trick On Fluency With Line Count
Apr 15, 2015

I discovered this recently and thought I would share. I always used to punch out to go to the bathroom or anytime I would get up so that my inactive time would not build. I figured out today if you upload a job and don't hit enter again to download the next one Fluency is in limbo. Meaning the inactive time is not being counted against you. SOOO if you need to go throw in that load or laundry or use the bathroom upload the job you are working on but don't download the next one. L ...

Here's Another Shorthand Tip...
Oct 17, 2009

Someone recently had an issue with Shorthand and Autocorrect both operating at the same time, and they were apparently fighting with each other, because both of them had some of the same expansions/corrections, so the user was getting duplicate text. I finally worked out a system for myself where Shorthand is used for actual expansions, shortcuts, etc. Autocorrect is restricted to correcting misspelled and mis-capitalized words. If I have done it correctly, never the twain should meet, and I can ...

ShortHand - What's So Different About It?

Ok, I downloaded Short Hand expander program but, for the life of me, it looks just like the standard auto expander/auto correct that comes with word. All those Short Hand experts out there (and I believe there are at least a few of you), can someone tell me how this works differently than what I'm already usin ...

Shorthand 10 Help
Nov 17, 2014

Since I'm unable to use MS auto correct with my current platform I explored Shorthand, a program I used years ago.  They've gotten too smart for me.  All I want to do is add words on the fly.  The screen I get when invoking SH10 shows no way to save any entry I might make.  Surely I'm missing something here.  If anyone can point the way I'd appreciate it--enter text, save and move on.  Thanks.   ...

Dec 03, 2014

Does it work interactively in MS Word?  Can you easily transfer your entries from Autocorrect to Shorthand?  I was checking out Instant Text but apparently now you have to download it, not avail on disk.  I think this means if your computer crashes and/or you want it on a new computer you have to RE-BUY it (at almost $200)...yeah I don't think so!   ...

Problems With Shorthand 10
