Right Shoulder/Upper Arm Ache - Meh

Posted: Jun 24, 2014

I've heard about getting carpal tunnel syndrome if you type a lot, but I've not experienced anything at all like that, at least no so far. However, recently I've started feeling some shoulder and upper arm area ache, not really pain, but just some localized yet diffuse ache in the upper part of my right upper extremity. (I'm starting to talk like a physician.) Anybody else experience this before? I should get back into yoga.

You do not want - frozen shoulder

So yes, yoga, anything that gets the ROM going and moving. I have had it twice of both shoulders and it is terrible.

Not sure if that is your problem, but I know now if I start getting pain and wake up all clenched up in the morning I need to do something other than sitting all day and get moving more.

What happened to me was I tried to put a dish away on an upper shelf and could not do it, literally just could not lift my arm that high, and when I did push myself or accidentally wrench the shoulder, oh the pain. So, antiinflammatories and physical therapy for months that time, but I had better insurance then (hint, NOT Nuance) and could not afford to do that again, so I just make sure I don't get to that point again.

Sadly, our job is such we don't notice it until it is too late since we don't really need much of a ROM for this job.

Left shoulder - for me. . .

The pain wakes me up if I sleep on that shoulder. Constant aching and decreased range of motion and also losing strength in the shoulder all of a sudden. Not sure if it's a bursitis or something with the rotator cuff. Taking Aleve every other day helps a lot. I've tried ice and heat but it's hard to locate exactly where the pain is coming from.

My guess is it's from editing and the different hand/arm placement on the keyboard. When I was off for 5 days it was so much better.

I'd go to the doctor but can't afford the studies, physical therapy, etc., right now.

My daughter had that. Doc and MRI said it was coming from the cervical disks, C2-C3 and 4-5. She finally had to have neck surgery surgery twice, the last time she had one of those new disks placed in her neck and it went away. I had that kind of pain when I slept wrong. My neck and shoulder hurt so bad. I used Salonpas patches for a few days, ice and heat. That worked for me. Also you might want to check on YouTube for exercises that might help.

If you can't afford to go to a doctor - sm

or pay for extensive diagnostics, maybe file a workers comp claim. They will pay 100% of everything if your claim is accepted. My bet is that it would be accepted as work-related unless you have had some trauma in that particular area. Google things like transcription occupational injuries, upper extremity overuse, etc. Good luck.

Not That Serious - Meh

[ In Reply To ..]
It's really not that serious at this point. It's actually just minor. A little stretching exercise should handle it. But I've never experienced ANY ache at all in my body up to this point my whole life. Think maybe it's due to hour and hours sitting typing.

Nuance has just had a MAJOR announcement!  They are making changes to upper management AGAIN.  It is no wonder we get paid crap.  Look at their structure and they have WAY too many people in this establishment and all making way more than we do and we are the ones that do the work.  Heck, they probably do not even know how to do transcription I bet.  Greed, greed, greed.  And I could care less about it.  Give me the pay I am worth.  They want better qualit ...

I know we've got some management that read the board and occasionally respond, and I just wondered if one could answer a question for me.  Having been in the healthcare field for about 40 years, I understand that it is a 365/24/7 industry.  But I am having a hard time wrapping my head around the idea of everyone working either Sunday-Thursday or Tuesday through Saturday.      Why can you not have rotating weekends?  Then an MT could have entire weekends ...
