Look out for BPH expansion - by speech engine

I almost got caught just now, dictated as BPH, expanded BY THE SPEECH ENGINE to benign prostatic hypertrophy. Guess what happens when they catch that? I would get marked off because BPH can be either benign prostatic hypertrophy or benign prostatic hyperplasia, right?

Ridiculous. Can't they teach the speech engine not to expand things when they have set the rule not to? Sometimes I have to wonder if they sit around trying to figure out ways to get us, really.

is if you are an employee, how is it fair to require you to do work to make less money. By removing the expansion, you are working toward a negative bottom line. Am I crazy to think that? It makes no sense to me.

With being marked off for expansions because the dictator did not expand and the speech engine did. I complained and they reversed it and the policy seems now to my knowledge be if the dictator dictates an extraction and the speech engine expands it you are alright, as long as it is an okay expansion.

But I think the BPH thing is ridiculous. Why did they even put it in the speech engine if they tell us not to expand it unless dictated what they want?

Knowing Nuance, you would think they would have already stopped the speech engine expanding anything. God forbid they actually help us make money instead of taking it off us!

like Hal, it is running amok, making nonsense out of what is dictated and generally terrorizing the MTs. They either can't or won't do anything about it, and it's getting worse not better.

I seriously wonder about their logic. - What about Dragon?

This voice wreck must be doing something to tarnish the Dragon's image. Doesn't that matter to anyone? Not to even mention the number of MTs leaving the company in droves because of the cruel and greedy pay cut and, of course, the new hires that cannot be retained because of all the nonsense, which is way too much to mention here. I'll just say one word: password. I doubt I'll wait around until their restructuring in the fall. Too little too late. Do it now!!

The only thing I ever heard about this was that if the dictator said BPH we were not to expand it. I can't find it in the transcription guidelines though, although I may not have the most recent update due to not always wanting to go into FIESA to check what has been updated.

Even things like this can be account specific too, I think.

hyperplasia versus hypertrophy - anon

I am an MT for Nuance and also just completed a coding course. I believe this issue arose because there are 2 distinct codes, one for benign prostatic hypertrophy and the other for benign prostatic hyperplasia, so if it is not specified and you automatically expand it, then it may possibly be coded incorrectly. Not everyone or all managers have been updated I believe, but this is probably where the initial directive came from, to prevent incorrect coding.

I am just now cross training in ICD-10, which will be the new coding used beginning October of this year, and hypertrophy and hyperplasia are coded similarly here so I do not think this will be an issue anymore? Looking up hypertrophy actually refers you to look up enlargement, and hyperplasia codes are the same as these codes (N40.x) There is a difference made between enlarged prostate and nodular prostate but not between hypertrophy and hyperplasia. Hopefully this will clear things up!

I've been out of transcription for a couple of years and wonder what the most popular expansion program is now. I loved PRD before it expired years ago. More recently used Abbreviate for it's ability to provide formatted text (bold print, etc) in the short forms so an entire H&P format could be saved. Is that still on the market? does anyone else have favorite abbreviations they just love using? I noticed yesterday when I typed my expansion for 4th-5th webspace (45ws), I actually got a rush- my heart sped up and I felt like "gee that was fun!" I've used the ShortCut expansion program for 13 years so I'd hate to have to change now, but I'm having a problem with my expansions popping out ever since I installed Word 2010. They actually come out in slow motion, so slowly that I have a paragraph typed and only two or so words will be expanded. Just wondering if anyone else has had this happen. I got 0.25 taken off for the dictator having dictated "temp" and the report having "temperature." Had I typed it from scratch I would have typed temp, but the ISR did it and it said "temperature," so I did not change it. Are we actually supposed to shorten the expansions perpetrated by the ISR? I used to use AutoCorrect in DQS, and when I put in 72yo, it came out 72-year-old. With ShortHand, it does not expand, I assume because the 72 is attached to the yo and the computer therefore doesn't read yo by itself and therefore does not expand. Can someone tell me how to enter this into my ShortHand dictionary so that whenever I enter a number plus yo, it expands to XX-year-old? Sorry for my ShortHand newbieness, and thanks in advance. ...

I work full time for a company where I am on a platform with a built in expander program, but I recently started picking up jobs for a friend's company when she gets too busy and her staff can't keep up with it. All of the work there is done on Word and would be so much easier if I had an expansion program.
