Happy Memorial Day ... now get back to work! - CaliMT

So, today, while all of my family is heading over to my sister's pool party, I am stuck at my desk waiting for work to (hopefully) trickle in.  This is so discouraging, especially knowing that EVERY holiday will be like this, unless I want to use my PTO time, of which there is precious little. 

I could deal with all the other changes here at Nuance, but this one is the worst.  It is so demoralizing to know that we aren't even worthy of that one little benefit that most Americans are enjoying today. 

My nephew works as a bagger at the grocery store and he is getting paid TRIPLE-TIME to work today ... think about that for a minute!

As soon as there was no work, I would punch out, - go to party, and tomorrow...

There is no way that I would sit for the duration of a shift, unless of course they are paying me time and a half of my average pay to do nothing.

I'm actually making decent money right now. Unemployment would only be a little over half of my paycheck, and I can't afford that.

Getting out isn't an option for me, as we're trying to pay off my husband just changed jobs, we're trying to pay off student loans, and hoping to buy a house sometime in the next year. I need the job and I don't complain about much, but this holiday stuff is just too much to take.

At Webmedx, we made double-time on the holidays we worked and at least got a few holidays off a year without having to dip into our own personal PTO time. Looking at a future of working EVERY SINGLE DAY, FIVE DAYS A WEEK with no break is just heartbreaking.

It is really upsetting to me to think that we aren't even considered worthy of a paid holiday. People need holidays, period. No one else working a full-time job has to use PTO for holidays, they just don't. It is truly ridiculous.

I actually like my job at Nuance, like my manager, and like you, don't have much to complain about, but this is very upsetting. I actually cried when I found out about that particular change in policy. I just felt so hopeless about it.

I was hired 7 months ago and I swear that when I asked about holidays, she not only named them but said they were paid and bragged up the 25% increase if you work a holiday. Ticks me off royally. Just another reason why I'm looking to get out of this MT BS.

Now that they have taken away our Big 5 holiday pay, I feel invaluated and demoralized. To add fuel to the fire, my account has no dictation on the holidays. So not only do I lose the pay, I lose the pay and 1/4 we are supposed to be paid if we do work the holiday. I made no holiday plans on Memorial Day and sat here with no work. This and other companies with this policy should be taken to their knees. I am getting the hell out of Dodge.

Back in the day you got paid for NOT WORKING on the big 6 holidays and only worked for the extra $$$ as a volunteer. Where I work, you have to take PTO on the holiday or work - paid holidays are a thing of the past.

Nobody I know outside of MT world is being forced to work a holiday or take meager PTO to cover it. NOBODY!

Meanwhile, those who are unfortunate to be scheduled for Monday are slaving away, getting nitpicked for how long we're taking to complete a job.

In this day and age, all I see is "sad" MTs and, in my opinion, if "Happy Transcriptions" is still happy, they can only be messing even more with us poor "sad" MTs. Hello, I would like to transcribe from home again. However, I HAVE to get up and walk for a few minutes at least once an hour. You see, I had to have 2 back surgeries in the last 18 months. I've been a transcriptionist for many years and this is my profession. Does anyone have a suggestion what to tell these companies that will hire you to work from home when you have to get up so much? I've been at TTS for almost 3 years and I have nothing but positive things to say about TTS.  I never have to guess what TTS expects from me, and I do my best to deliver that on a consistent basis.  Communication flows freely and efficiently.  My team leader and 2 shift leads are EXCELLENT managers in my opinion.  Everything I invest in my job comes back to me and then some.  I can recommend TTS to anybody unapologetically. ...

I am surprised at just how many or your are miserable with what you do.  I am a new MT ans I am also having trouble finding work.  It's not easy.  I can see that having editing to fall back on would be good.  I have read the posts about don't do this just to work from home.  I have small children and my only choice would be daycare if I went to work somewhere, which would eat up half my pay check.  Sometimes it's not just money, sometimes it's fo ...

I'm starting training on a new job this weekend and 90% of it is VR, but all clinic notes, no ops or discharge summaries. It seems like it might easy and a nice change from straight typing for me. I understand how frustrated many people are with the way things are going with MT jobs.  I am not posting this to make anyone feel worse, but to let people know that there are some good jobs in MT.  I work for a private local medical office.
