typical line per day count - Rhiannon

Posted: Aug 22, 2011

Hello all, I am just wondering if all of you can tell me what you feel is pretty 'typical' for a line count per day. I FINALLY got a job today and they are paying me per line as an IC, which is fine, but I want to make sure I keep up with what they expect. I am sure I will be slow at first, so I want to have some idea of where I am at. Thanks!!

line count - depends

a lot of companies have a minimum line count of about 1000 a day, 5000 for a week, and 10,000 for a pay period.

It will depend on how many ESL dictators you have, the quality of the dictation, whether or not you use lots of shortcuts. How many characters per line (usually 65 these days, I suppose).

You should be able to do at least 1000 lines a day, but if you have some good dictators, etc, could be 1500 or more. Of course, this is for straight typing.

ASR is going to be different again.
Depends on how good your platform is, how many corrections you have to make per line. Maybe a 2000 if you are doing ASR.

Lots of variables.

Unbelievable!!! - Rhiannon

OMG, you are not going to believe the conversation I had yesterday afternoon. I contacted the people that I am supposed to be working for because of the situation with my dad (long story, bad health, cancer...). He responded back and said that I maybe just needed to take some time to be with my family and we could work on things when I got back. I had said that I would still come in next week for a training day and give them time to set up my computer. He seemed like that was fine and then we'd get working when I got back. I offered more than once that I could set up my laptop and work from my mom and dad's house while there, in knowing that I may not be able to work "full time" with the whole thing.

At any rate, I don't know if the whole thing was really bothering him because we kept emailing or he thought I was flaking on him or what, but he apparently then forwarded the email on to the boss/owner and she emailed me back that I should just take the time to do what I needed to do and "get it together." I could reapply at a later time if I wanted, but I needed to be aware that it would take probably 6 months of me coming in a "training" there before I would be able to work from home(This place is a 2-hour drive from my house).

So, I got on the phone to speak with her. She was a nasty b#*&@ and basically said she didn't care what I had to say because she was the owner and it was her decision. She said that she would still be willing to work with me if I was willing to come in a work there for months and months to train. I explained that I didn't think it would make much sense because I would be spending at least $30 just in gas, and then if I was still only making production rates, where would that leave me? I'd probably end up spending more than I'd make. I started crying, which of course didn't help, but she was just SO rude!! She then proceeded to tell me that I would be making X amount per line and that I'd have to do anywhere between 160 and 200 lines per hour to be getting a decent wage, and she knows that starting out I won't be able to do that since I have such limited experience. Then I was like, whoa, whoa, whoa, slow down, I was told I would be making THIS amount per line and that I would only have to come there one day to get "trained" or acclimated to how they do things, get my computer set up, and be on my way. She said I had already had more drama in a couple of days then what she's had to deal with in a year with other people. So then I was really pissed and I said, I have already spent money on stuff I needed to get for this job. She didn't care about anything. It was just that I HAD TO agree to come and work there for as long as it takes. Drama, really? My dad is sick with cancer and I have a lot of computer questions. That's drama? Unbelievable!!!!!

I am so upset and disgusted and don't know what to do. I SO desperately need a job and now I just spent money on stuff I don't need. I am trying to cancel everything, but some things have already shipped. I am just at a loss for what to do....

sorry to hear that - someone who cares

Run while you can. Apply with a company that you do not need to come in for and that you do not to buy equipment for except maybe a foot pedal. Usually they install software for you from a sharesite so you can be anywhere for that as long as there is internet. I hope everything goes well with your dad hun. If they are so nasty at your worst time why would you want to earn money for them. Try someone else where you don't have to train at their site. Best of luck to you.

VR Line Count - What Kind Of Line Production Should I Shoot For
Mar 24, 2011

I was just hired on with a company to do strictly VR. I am only going to be working part time so about 4 hours a day. I am wondering from those who do VR what kind of line production should I shoot for in 4 hours of work? What is the normal VR line count for part time? I have read that most who are working full time or 8 hours a day are doing more than 1,000, even 2,000 a day. The company I will be working for wants a minimum of 10,000 lines in a payperiod which the lady said even with part time ...

Character Count/line Count
Feb 23, 2011

Is this correct? I type 70,000 characters a day. I am paid by the 65 character line so I would divide 70,000 by 65 to get 1076, then multiple that by pay per line, say $.10 and get $107. If this is not correct then what is the formula? And what is the average number of lines per day? Thanks so much for the info. ...

Line Count...
Sep 19, 2012

I have been working for this company for about 18 month and so far so good. It was even bought out by a bigger company and everything stayed the same with no problems. They don't bother me, I do my work and everything is fine. About 6 months ago my line count started going way down and I really just chalked it up to not being able to concentrate as much because my baby started walking and basically making it impossible for me to work. For the past week my line count has about doubled. ...

I have been told that I need to increase my LPH.  So last night I kept track of the lines of each document done by using MS Word.  But later when I compared it to Nuance's line tracker (ichart) it only listed half the lines that MS Word listed.  How can this be?  I realized that Word my count blank lines, but how can there possibly be that much difference?  I felt like I really kicked butt last night, but then to look at LPH with Nuance's ichart I felt cheated/ ...

Receiving Only A % Of Line Count??

Is it typical to only receive a percentage of your edited lines because "editing is faster and better" than straight transcription?  I am new to VR, but this seems odd to me.
