When do you proofread your transcribed report? - KB

Hi all, When do you proofread your transcribed report? Do you wait until you are finished or do you proofread each section when finished? And, do you ever get faster? I'm afraid if I wait until I'm finished I will not remember things. Also, do you re-listen to the dictation or not? Thanks. Many questions. KB.

The best way IMO is to proofread while you are transcribing. That way you create a live story in your mind and can connect the dots as you go along, i.e., make edits and notice "red flags" as you are transcribing. Then at the end of the report, always go back and scan the report to again look for anything you may have missed. But first make sure you are accurate the first time out and proofread as you transcribe. Get it right the first time as you transcribe, then go back and double check to make sure it is perfect.

I also proofread as I go. I don't remember ever making a conscious decision to do it, just sort of seemed the way my brain/fingers/brain work in sync! LOL! I no longer have to actively think while I work, the words just feel like they are automatically processed by my brain knowing which finger to move in response to what's heard; meanwhile my eyes are reading the report several words behind.

As a new MT, I'd recommend working on developing the skill of proofing as you go, but depending upon the difficulty of your work, you may want to spend a couple of weeks doing a fast relisten, then graduate to a fast visual proofread at the end.

It'll take you a little time but you'll find what works best for you.

Thank you Imj. I'm so afraid of making mistakes that I am going pretty slow. The QA folks preach proofreading and to absolutely never send a report to the client that you have not looked over again after you have transcribed it. I am thinking of doing section by section.

I have a habit of sometimes typing "no" instead of "not" or leaving an "ly" off the end of a work. Knowing this doesn't seem to keep me from still making the mistakes, but it definitely helps me when I'm proofreading.

Proofreading as you go works best for me. I do a complete re-listen only on dictators that are particularly hard for me such as a fast dictator or a difficult ESL dictator, otherwise, edit as you go along. The 5-word proofread is a good method to use, which is proofreading 5 words at a time or how ever many words work for you.

I was a transcriptionist for 30 years. I have been away from it the last 4 years, except I am a full time online MT student at an approved school through AHDI. I'm due to graduate in July and get my RMT, then I want to get my CMT. I can't find a job transcribing! Does anyone have any suggestions? Everyone seems to want someone with "recent" experience. A friend of mine who works in a medical office told me this afternoon that they've started getting records that are transcribed overseas. She said the records are done so badly that they can't use them, can't trust that the information in them is correct. When I told her my job may go away soon & be sent to India, she said "it can't!" She said these records are obviously done by people who don't speak English. What I don't understand is how work can still be off ...

My employer has recently gone from straight transcription to VR (using MedQuist's DocQSpeech). At this point, after 4 months on VR, production is up 11% overall. The employer says they believe it will go up 48% overall (60% for VR lines, no change of course for transcribed lines, 80% of lines VR). At this point, indeed, at least 80% of lines are VR. The dictator clearly dictated a word with an apostrophy following it. The word actually has an accent mark following the last letter, but he specifically dictated an apostrophy. I got it marked as an error. I don't get it -- it was a verbatim account -- I did what he said - and now it's error. Frustrated!!!! ...
