Looking for entry level medical transcription work in MN - katiekamrad

Posted: Mar 03, 2010

Hi everyone. I am a recent graduate from Rasmussen online college with a 2 year degree in medical transcription. I just graduated in September. I did land a very very part time homed medical transcription job in mid November and was let go in January because the lady I subcontracted for told me she needed me to be perfect within 2 months and I wasn't delivering the kind of perfection she needed. I kept reminding her that I had 0 medical transcription experience before my education training and very minimal internship experience. She hired me based on the fact that I have a 2 year degree not a 9 month training diploma. I talked to my career services advisor about her expecations on me being a newbie and she said her expectations were way too high and that she shouldn't have hired me if she wanted me to be perfect right away. To make the long story short, when she hired me she said it would take me at least 6 months to be good at what I was doing, and she fired me after 2 months because I wasn't perfect enough. I was only making small grammar errors.

I am currently back a square one, looking for entry level medical transcription work, hopefully working from home again. I would like to work fulltime and I'm even willing to take non medical transcription work. If anyone knows of any medical transcription services that are hiring newbies like me with little job experience please let me know. Even if it is an out of state transcription service that is willing to hire me to work from home and take a test I would be willing to do that. I already applied for MedQuist and failed their tests twice and I am in the processing of getting my test reviewed with RI Unlimited. If anyone can suggest anything else for me I would greatly appreciate it and pass on the word to other newbies. Thank you.

I am sure it is probably an old post by now, but a newbie did mention in a post below the name of a company hiring newbies. Read some posts below.

If you get a job with a transcription company, it does not matter where you live. So would not necessarily need to be in MN. Where in MN are you from? I am from MN also.

Hi fellow MN,
Are you talking about the Jumpstart program mentioned in previous post?
Can you tell me what the company name is?
By the way, I'm from Eagan, MN.
And where in MN are you from?

I live in St. Paul MN myself and work on-line doing MT - LindaK

There are some places that do hire newbies if you look at www.mtjobs.com would be one example, just look through the list. I have been doing this for 25 years. If I can help in anyway please feel free to e-mail me.

In Minnesota - way up north

I am way up north in Roseau, near the border. I did live in Minneapolis for 15 years and worked at the University Hospital when they actually had a transcription department; now they have outsourced all their work too
In Minnesota - Same thing here

I'm in Crookston! Clinics here all went to EMR. I'm not too impressed when I go to the doctor and it takes 20 minutes to register, another 15 minutes for the nurse to point and click instead of scribbling in the chart, and I'm sure even longer when it finally gets down the line to the doctor. Talk about a bunch of wasted time and money. I'd like to know how they think that's efficient. I'm probably more biased in my opinion of thinking it sucks though considering it's putting me out of a job.

Small grammar errors count too. - deb

Were you learning from your mistakes, or did you keep making the same ones?

With all the experienced MTs running out of work, it's going to be pretty hard to get a new job, especially with no experience, if you can't pass transcription tests. I think you should complain to your school that you paid them to teach you MT, but you are failing transcription tests and can't get a job.

Hi deb,

At first I made the same mistakes but after I got a system down, which took about a month and a half, the lady that hired me let me go before I could prove myself. I did hear that it's very hard to get into Medquist and that's the only place I did grammar testing. I haven't heard back yet from the other 2 places I tested as they said it would take a week or two to give me my results back.

MT schools do NOT teach grammar, high schools do! - grammar

Data Entry Or Medical Transcription?
May 13, 2011

It seems that more and more companies, including some hospitals, are paying per line but then expecting you to do data entry, which of course you are NOT paid for. Just a few examples: Acute care on Dictaphone ExText/Word Client -- faxing, etc. McKisson -- Looking up and changing orders for radiographic studies Rad job posted here -- Entering patient demographics If an employer expects me to sit there and do data entry -- which has NO shortcuts -- IN ADDITION TO transcibing, then they' ...

Wikipedia Entry For Medical Transcription
Jan 01, 2013

During a lull in my workload (Happy New Year!), I googled Wiki's take on our profession.  I have to say I'm impressed with the description--pretty much every aspect of the evolution of medical transcription is covered, even the negative turn of events (VR, pay cuts, etc.) in recent years with regard to us MTs being unappreciated-and underpaid.  Thought you guys might want to check it out if you haven't already. ...

Entry Level Pay
Jun 10, 2011

Hi all, Just a quick question.  In all your years of experience, what would you think would be a fair starting pay (hourly please) at a smaller acute care hospital doing varied types of jobs?  I do a lot of typing for the actual hospital, the two clinics (one inside the hospital and our satellite clinic in another town) and physical therapy.   I do alot of transcription but I also have a lot of other medical records duties as well that I have to balance.  I do ...

Mar 26, 2010

Okay, here's the situation I am in. I graduated school in 2008, but i got hired before I even graduated and I have been transcribing IC for a local family practice for 3 years. Therefore, I have school + 3 years experience, just not in a hosptial or acute care setting, which seems to be everyone's requirement! I noticed someone said Spheris hires newbies so I checked out their site. For the new graduates, it says you must have graduated in the past 6 months or within the past year and ...

CLK Transcription - What An Insulting Pay Level
Sep 07, 2011

Really?  You're going to offer $21 an a/h when it takes 3 to 4 times the dictation length to complete a report?  That equates to LESS THAN THE FEDERAL MINIMUM WAGE - BEFORE TAXES!!  People PLEASE do not accept this!! Even if you are a newbie just starting out in transcription the absolute MINUMUM you should accept is $40 an a/h!  What CLK is offering to pay is equal to off-shore wages.  General transcription is not difficult at all - far easier than medical, but it ...

Medical Transcription At Home To Become A Medical Scribe?
Jan 20, 2015

Has anybody left medical transcription at home to become a medical scribe?  I have an opportunity to do so but there aren't any scribes currently in my area and I don't know anyone who has worked as a scribe before.  The scribe position starting pay is almost double what I make as an MT per hour so it is very tempting, I just don't know much about it. ...

U.S. Transcription Non Medical
Sep 01, 2011

I answered an ad for U.S. Transcription posted on MT Jobs, was asked to test, and within an hour of submitting my test I was offered a job.  After my heart came down from a happy dance at an actual job offer, I found I really have some things to think about before I say yes.
