Please don't take a job where you're not paid for spaces. You are better than that and deserve more. It takes a good chunk out of your pay, especially when these MT companies don't pay you much anyway. If you have to do it out of desperation, please keep your eye on another job where you ARE paid for spaces and take it the first chance you get. Just a piece of friendly advice.

Paid for spaces. The only exception was the last job I had. I took it when I was desperate and broke. With it being a VR job and also having low pay, plus not being paid for spaces, I never typed enough to make my line count. That had never happened before in the previous jobs I worked at.

And I'm sorry, I can't help you with the companies that pay better because I am done with medical transcription. I wouldn't with it on my worst enemy. But I have seen MTs on this forum say that they are being paid decently (most won't give out their company names though). It's just that it's the exception, not the rule. It seems like you really have to dig to find the decent companies.

I can't deal with lower pay year after year, pay decreases instead of raises, back-breaking work with no recognition, the isolation of the job, having to break your back to qualify for health insurance, the pain of sitting in a chair for 7-8 hours, etc. After 7 years, I'm out.

I am an IC for a psychologist who pays by the page - $3.00/page! I make about $20-24/hour with her. Too bad she is only part-time. Wish that kind of money could be made with MTSO, because acute care is a lot more difficult than psych, let me tell ya.

Not sure if it helps to know or not but if you are doing VR, it's 99% likely you are NOT being paid for spaces. Afterall, you're not PRODUCING the spaces. And since most of the transcribed work is still done in the same application as the VR work, you dont get paid spaces for transcribed work. You should be getting paid a higher line rate, however, for what you produce from scratch (and I mean higher than 8 or 9). But this is where I see services taking advantage, by ...

Just as an experiment...With Saince I typed about 12-13 reports, typed one that was 18 minutes long in the midst of the others. It equaled a little over 400 lines (it was under 420). Now, with a job that pays for spaces, I typed one report 12 min long - 126 lines. Typing 10 reports, I hit 424 lines. Just curious, I'm trying to decide between a few companies and I totally forgot to ask the interviewer. I think the whole VBC thing is criminal.
