why does everyone capitalize nitinol? - pickygirl

Posted: Feb 13, 2014

For those of you who take the time to view this post - I'm banging my head in frustration here!  NITINOL DOES NOT NEED A CAPITAL N!  It is nitinol basket, nitinol wire, nitinol mesh stent...etc, etc. Pull out a ref. book, for Pete's sake!!  There - now i've said my piece, I can go back to correcting the 900 instances of the capital N in the reports i'm auditing.  Does anyone bother to review Feedback?  If so, I wouldn't have to change Nitinol to nitinol every single darned time...and maybe the stupid VR system would learn...

(ps - just so everyone understands why no capital N, nitinol is a type of metal - we don't capitalize aluminum do we?)

Same reason - They capitalize fentanyl

I have no idea why they capitalize things that don't get the caps. They think it's a trademarked/brand name.

I think it's because of Google, actually. You can find all kinds of wrong info on a general Google search, but nobody likes books anymore.

Maybe because VR does. - NM

VR does because it's been "taught" wrong! - pickygirl

VR is only as smart as the people editing the jobs. If everyone took the time to change the incorrect stuff, we'd be MUCH further ahead than we are today!!

VR also capitalizes Aspirin (nm) - Rose

Gag on Google :) - pickygirl

Google searches should be banned from our profession! I'm an old-timer and my Stedman's library is full of tattered, torn, falling apart books that I've just about used up - wish the newbies would understand how detrimental a Google/Yahoo/Bing search can be to accurate healthcare documentation! The VR system will never learn what is correct if everyone just keeps putting things in that they "think" are right. Call me a dinosaur...just don't capitalize it! LOL! :)

Yup, Gag on Google - fentanyl example lady

Back in the good old days, we were clearly told that just googling something was dangerous---enter diabetes melitis.

I loved my Stedman's library and used it until I quit MT 2 years ago. When I first started MT, there was no Internet to speak of, let alone Google searches. When Google came, we were clearly warned by the MT company. Google now is no more reliable than it used to be. Google is not an MT word book, as some MTs would think it is.

It's not Google's fault, it's the lazy Mts - I use Google

[ In Reply To ..]
Don't blame the search engine. It's just a tool, just like your books are. Yes, there is lots of incorrect information out there. That's why MTs can't be lazy and take the first example they see. They have to read the documentation, and stick to trusted sources and make sure that what they are looking at fits the context of what they are typing. Does it take a little bit of time? Yes. Will you learn something? Yes.

I've "only" been an MT for 5.5 years and I've never had the library of books that the old timers have. I work acute care and my QA scores are always in the 99% range. I'm not bragging (much) but just pointing out that it's not Google that makes the mistakes.
If I going to be paid like a "typist".. - yougetwhatyougive

then that's what I'll do. The days of me taking time to do research and stressing over the small stuff (meaning.. misuse of a punctuation or capital letter which isn't going to kill anybody) are gone! I'M A TYPIST NOW.. at least that's why my paycheck tells me..
*I'm* - yougetwhatyougive

Not blaming Google - see msg
[ In Reply To ..]
I'm not blaming Google, per se. I'm blaming people who think it's the be-all, end-all.

I agree that word books are also a tool, but at least they're MT tools; Google is not. When we used word books, we still may have to verify in a medical dictionary.

That being said, since people don't buy books anymore, at least be concious of the site you are on. WebMD is likely reliable. Joe-wanna-be-doctor is not.

Exactly! (sm) - Rose

While I object to free labor in correcting, for example, dictator errors inputting demographics, we are expected to either know all the terms or be able to find them unless the doctor is mispronouncing them. I not only get a Google match, but find one that I know is reliable like a medical journal or teaching hospital, not just something input from any blogger.

To Capitalize Or Not...department Names
May 24, 2010

When do you capitalize departments?  I have been in the biz for 10 years, and my current QA staff is giving me conflicting feedback on my capitalization.  One QA manager is giving me errors for not capitalizing, the other is giving me errors when I do!  I was always taught that you didn't capitalize the department unless it was preceded by the proper name of the hospital (XYZ Hospital Emergency Department, etc). Also, as far as specialties, how do you handle those?  For ...
