typing or VR? Which would you choose as best overall? - Angela

I don't think the question is - to type or VR...

The question is how much to get paid for doing either. I don't know if there is anyone making more than chump change doing VR at 3 cpl, but typing at 5 and 6 cpl is no better either.
None of the above these days, which is why I'm getting out. - nm

That's it for me. Half of my life has been doing transcription and I'm now done. It's a joke and you can't make a living on it.

I just wonder if anyone makes money at VR? There may be a trick I don't know about.

Agree with the others that VR is monotonous and boring. With typing/transcribing, you're listening to the narrative, creating sentence structure, etc. With VR, you're just skimming - and the inherent goal is to do it as fast as humanly possible - and it all becomes just printed words.
I did make good money at my last company of 20+ years (now closed). I was paid 6 cpl for VR and 7 on weekends, had a great platform (ExText) with minimal editing, demographics automatically imported, and paid for headers and footers. I averaged 450-500 an hour. Oh, and NO AUDITS or NITPICKY QA. As trained by the Dictaphone representatives, we edited ONLY for medical/accurate meaning.
I like my current company but make much less because:
Pay (although with incentives I make more than 5 cpl).
No headers or footers. That was a wake-up! What company started this trend? It makes no sense, especially as it takes so long now to input all the demographics for the header. Without pay.
M*Modal based. Much less efficient than ExText, extra steps, more cumbersome.
MUCH more time spent on demographics and remembering specifics like which client wants numbers spelled out, or followup or follow-up, July 4, 2012 or 07/04/12. Previously we just transcribed what the doctor dictated and used common sense.
More errors to fix.
Nitpicky QA (well, it's actually only one - the others are fair) who tells me I need to take out the hyphen when the system prints near-syncope, add an "on" before a date, "the" mammogram instead of "a" mammogram...ARGH. How can you possibly speed it up and make money?
Thank you everyone for your info. I am trying to decide between the two. I feel typing is probably - Angela

I started doing VR at a good line rate (4.5 cpl). When we first had training it was not to over edit, agree on headings and dates, etc. All the docs were entered into the system so they said. Keep it uniform they said.
Well that worked for 2 weeks and the docs started complaining and wanted the work edited to their specific requirements. Some of them are very very picky about how they want the report to look so extra editing must be done to meet thier specific requirements. The headers that were supposed to be auto populated had very few physicians so lookup had to be done. Can you say lots of google for wacky names that are mispronounced and no where in the demographics to be found? Much time is spent catering to fussy clients and the line counts are low compared to hours worked. The bottom line was keeping the client happy while saving money paying edited line rates. To do that it means paying a transcriptionist less for the same quality as typing it out and saying that that is how the industry works because no one is paying the higher rates anymore.
The hospitals buy the sale pitch and it is good for their bottom line. On paper it looks like we are producing more but I know the actual dollar amount of salaries are decreasing.
I do know people are doing well in VR but they have easy system to work with, good dictators with very little editing, a lot of sandardized common phrases, headers and dates standardized and demographics are autopopulated. If that is in place VR can be good but I don't think that is the norm.

Typing, definitely! With all the editing required for VR, I would just rather type it.

Looks Like QA Really Can Pick And Choose! Jan 04, 2015After browsing around in FIESA, I found what looks to be an instruction manual for the people who audit us and after looking at it, it sure does look like they can pick and choose which reports to audit, rather than randomly. I have also had the worst dictators audited more than the good ones. Of course it's easier to find a mistake that way and easier to keep our pay down! Remember 7 cpl is really equal to only 3.5 cpl if most of your jobs are VR. ...

Typing Without QA Apr 06, 2010You know, I think I am typing better and faster without the fear of QA hanging over me. I never thought they were extremely helpful anyways. Usually they couldn't fill in the blanks and just nit-picked the report like a pecking bird. I have never had a report sent back from a client (knock on wood) because they were unhappy with anything. I spent far more time trying to please QA than the hospitals and doctors (and have told my supervisor that more than once). ...

MQ Typing Versus ASR And Our Pay. Oct 01, 2010A very interesting post over in the VR forum which is proof IMO why we are going so broke doing ASR, and isn't even taking into account how horrible MQ DocQSpeech software is.
