non-medical transcription - have no idea what to charge - IC
Posted: Mar 02, 2011
I have an opportunity to transcribe interviews for the county. The files will be anywhere from 15 min to hours long, 3 to 4 of these a week, TAT is 1 week.
At the beginning of each interview, the lead interviewer dictates the attendees’ names and reason for participation in the interview. On each transcription, the person speaking must be identified each time he/she speaks. Occasionally more than 1 person speaks at a time and that has to be sorted out and identification made of each speaker.
I have no idea what to charge as I've only done medical transcription, but could sure use the extra bucks.
If anyone has an idea of how much I should charge I would sure appreciate it.
Thanks
That's my side job - Sue

My company actually pays me by the word. It is a research company. I started 11 years ago at 1 cent a word, then I went a few years later to 1.5 cents, and now I get 2 cents a word. That is pretty good pay though. I'm surprised they ever agreed to that. I would ask 1.5 cents per word probably.
If they pay by audio hour, you can get ripped off. I've seen companies pay $30 to $50 an audio hour and that's just not worth it. ~ If you do it by the word, then you're getting paid for what you type.

Would you be kind enough to answer a question for me? I’ve always wondered how they could pay by the word. Sorry for being so dense, if this is a silly question.
Are these each 1 word, so you get paid 2 cents for each?

How do you get into something like this? I feel my medical transcription is limiting me and I am not getting enough work lately. I have seen advertisements for general transcription before, but mostly through a site where you have to "bid" on a job, some are off shore, and I am not sure what to do to obtain one of these positions. Can you help? TIA

They posted an ad here a few weeks ago and they handle general transcriptions. Senate meetings, DWI videos etc. So far it is not consistant work but it was nice to have options and experience in a different field.

This article gave me a lot of information that I was looking for. I hope I am not expecting too much, as medical transcription seems to be dying out slowly, but general transcription may be more lucrative now with today's technologies. Thanks again. I can hardly wait to get started! :-)
Another post not thought out. How can you possibly think info - on job that pays 3.33 hour is great? nm

1.25 -1.50 per minute.
Am I figuring right. 1 hour for $10.00 = 16 cpm? - That is crazy low. nm

it does state it is for someone just starting out as a newbie in the field and does not have a background with experience in this field. It also says as you gain more experience and more companies/individuals are wanting to use your services, then you charge much more. At least that was the way I understood it.
How much more CAN you charge if you are willing to start - at 16 cpm? nm
