line counts - umber of characters and spaces and divide by 65 - dizzylizzy

Can someone help me out here ? I have forgotten the purpose of this. I work for a company that does transcription in Microsoft Word. Of course you can check your line counts in word, but this company says that isn't right and we have to take the number of characters and spaces and divide by 65 and that is our line count, which is always less than what Word says. Can anybody remember why it's different? Thanks.

I believe the line count in Word counts blank lines.

That is, if that's the way they've agreed to pay you, which obviously they have. So the total characters including spaces divided by 65 is your line count.

Are you thinking line count should be based on gross lines in Word? Some places used to pay that way, but not much anymore.

In other words, this (underlined in red) divided by 65 equals your lines. Not "Lines" (which is gross line count, including blank lines between double-spaced paragraphs). So about 16 lines at 65 char per line for this report, not 25 lines.

AAMT decided to cut all of our salaries by about 30% by making the character count the "standard". So we were forced to take that big reduction in pay thanks to them.

Started working for a company just about 2 months ago. Contract states they pay for a 65 character line including spaces and bolding. Have been making about 50 lines per hour. Their system is window XP profession version and it is their computer. Does 50 lines per hour sound right. At my worst, at my last job I did at least 100 lines per hour. Does getting paid for spaces add about 2 cents to line rate? I was getting 10 cpl for an account (not paid for spaces) and then lost that to offshoring. The new account pays 8 cpl, but paid for spaces, so they say that's equivalent. Does that sound right? Is that the average rate now? I have a question: I currently make 8 cents a line, but it is VBC. If I had a job that paid 7 cents normally, but paid for spaces and other things in the report would one be coming out ahead making at least 8 cents a line or may be even more when it is all figured out? I was wondering if anyone knows exactly what OSI cuts out of their line counts? Seeing as they use a remote website for line counts, it is pretty obvious they cut corners with what MTs get paid on. I was just wondering WHAT are the cutting? Do they only pay 1 space? Do they not pay if you copy and paste? Do they only pay on a % per page - meaning if you have little on 1 page you aren't going to get any credit for those lines, etc? Just curio ...

I know this has been discussed before, but what is up with these line counts? I used to have no problem doing 200+ lph. Now, I work at the same pace on an account with less ESL speakers and I struggle to get my required 150 lph.
