left hand issue - bb9915

Posted: Mar 26, 2014

Have been having a very aggravating issue lately with my left hand.  There is no pain, no numbness, no temperature change issues, but rather a lack of coordination in regards to my left hand pinky and ring fingers only.  When trying to put hands on home keys or use the pinky or ring finger they curl up and I almost have to physically straighten them.  Not sure if started overnight or gradually just gotten worse, but has defiitely been bad for a week or so.  Making me CRAZY.  Any one with the same or somewhat similar.  Any help would be appreciated as one of the many with no health insurance not sure what to do as this is defintely effecting my livelihood as a young widow (at 38) with 2 kids I am getting very scared about the future.

I think you should a doctor. - sm

I'm so very sorry to hear that you're a widow at such a young age. Bless your heart. I bet you're a wonderful mom to your 2 kids. I'm praying that life will be less painful for you as time goes on.

As soon as I read your symptoms I thought of someone I know who has what's known as "hook finger" or Dupuytren's contracture. Here's a link to the Mayo Clinic page with info. Of course, I am NOT a doctor, so I sure can't make a diagnosis. If it is this condition, you will need to eventually see a hand specialist. But start with your family doctor and go from there. Maybe it's simply arthritis, although that can be painful and hard to function with, as well. Let us know what you find out. I wish you all the best.

Good Article (sm) - Rose

First, I am so sorry you lost your husband.

I linked to a Medscape article that discusses symptoms and distinguishing between similar conditions like Dupuytren's contracture, trigger finger, stenosing tenosynovitis and ganglion cyst. Can you file for disability and let them send you to a specialist for a diagnosis? A friend of mine who makes a living as a lead guitarist developed trigger finger. He put bandaids on the affected fingers so he could get through nightly shows. I'm not sure if something like that might be worth experimenting with in your situation. His condition gradually went away on its own.

Please keep us posted. Wishing you and your children strength through this difficult transition.

I posted about Mayo Clinic - but I think Rose has a better article

When Rose posts, I automatically go with her suggestions! :) I had only looked at the Mayo Clinic (my go-to) website. Rose's article gives a lot more info. Who'd have thought a curling finger could have so many possible diagnoses? I hope you get this checked and come back here to let us know what the doctor says.

first thought, was trigger finger...nm - jj

what has me baffled is that i have no problem with anything else i do. no decreased grip, still strong as can be, no pain, tingling or numbness. Just when I go to put my hands on the keyboard its like my 2 fingers are saying "no way". even with obamacare can't afford insurance. have thought about the trigger finger, the Dupuytren's and also looking into dystonia. line productivity has gone down greatly so extra money definitely not in the budget even though if i got this problem solved i hopefully could get back to serious work. guess that goes with the phrase it takes money to make money? worker's comp? not an option. Anyway... appreciate any helpful suggestions.

maybe adjust the arms of your chair - sm

Sometimes my left arm will go numb if the chair arm isn't just at the right angle. I wonder if that might make a difference with your finger.

Have you tried a split keyboard? The fingers are stretched out instead of cramped up. It takes a few days to get used to but made a world of difference to me.
Raise bottom of keyboard to reduce finger flexion (sm) - Rose

Mtinmi gave me that idea with her split keyboard idea and I tried it. If you have trigger finger it may help as it straightens the fingers the more you raise the bottom of the keyboard. Putting the keyboard on your lap may do the same.

Tech Help - Making A Comma With The Left Hand
Sep 18, 2014

I could increase my speed a lot if I could find some way to make a comma with my left hand.  I'm using my right hand to control the ==> cursor, and I have an ESL dictator who never says "comma" and a POS speech recognition software that never puts in commas, so I have 25 commas per report to put in. Is there any way to designate comma (,) to another key?  I have a Microsoft ergometric keyboard.   Thanks. ...
