heel pain - vlc

Posted: Oct 15, 2013

Does anyone else suffer from heel pain from constant use of the foot pedal? Was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on a setup that might alleviate the heel pain, perhaps by someone getting your heel off the floor somehow. Staples sells a foot rest, but someone you'd have to attach the foot pedal to it. Not sure if that would work.

Well I mean to say somehow, not someone :)

use a heel cup in your shoe available at most pharmacies. Make sure your ergonomics are correct such as seat height to floor so you foot is positioned properly. Also think about seeing a podiatrist to make sure there is nothing medical or structural going on with your foot. Last but not least, anti-inflammatories if you can take them.

Someone needs to invent a *flat* foot pedal. - How hard could that be?

Just some little actuators in a pad like the DDR mats?  My issue is actually more with my other leg and foot because of the height I have to sit to alleviate pain in my pedal foot.  I'm constantly playing around with things to lift one or the other foot up some so my hips and feet don't hurt (I have congenital hip dysplasia, so the typical ergo solutions don't cut it).

I've also been experimenting some with using keyboard commands for start/stop, which does indeed help my limbs, but not my production.  For the time being, I guess I'll go back and forth between keyboard commands and foot pedal to at least give my body a break.  I was actually searching Google for a flat USB or Infinity foot pedal yesterday (with no luck, obviously).

your chair - Lisa

I used to put my chair up higher, so only my toes touched the pedal.

I never had heel pain after I did this. - sm

I bought a gel wrist rest that you put in front of the keyboard and instead put it in front of the foot pedal. I could move it around and move the foot pedal around as I shifted positions. The gel doesn't sink in like memory foam and your heel never touches the floor again, and it doesn't elevate your foot so far that you have to reach down to use the foot pedal.

Here are a couple of things you could try.

In order to be up as close to the keyboard as possible, I have to have my chair too high for my feet to comfortably sit on the floor. So I got one of those aerobic steps (you might be able to find one cheap at Play It Again Sports or somewhere; I got a used one there). I put my foot pedal on the step and there's plenty of room for my other foot to rest on it, too.

I like to wear comfy slippers when I work, and I've noticed I get heel pain in my pedal foot when I don't have them on. That little extra cushion in the slippers really makes a difference.

I also like the idea of a gel wrist rest that the other poster suggested. I actually tried that, but it kept falling off my step platform, so I gave up on that one. If you could find a way to keep it from sliding around, that might work for you.

Hope you find something that works for you!

What I do... - KC

It doesn't totally solve the heel issue, but I bought a raised, angled footrest from Office Depot (or Office Max, can't remember for sure), and I can adjust the angle by moving my feet. It helps with the fact that my chair is too high for my feet to rest comfortably on the floor, and it has a non-skid surface so the pedal doesn't slide around. But most importantly, I alternate the foot that controls the pedal continuously throughout the day. The foot that isn't on the pedal is propped up to help with circulation.

I could still use a little extra padding for the heel, and it really wouldn't be very difficult to fashion something... I just haven't gotten around to doing it.

Thanks - some great ideas. I really like that gel wrist pad idea. I may try that.

Try putting it where you can just use your knee - OldandTired

My mom somehow affixed her sewing machine pedal on the inside wall of her table. It worked great, so I wonder if you could do that with your foot pedal.
