calculation of hours - ANONYMOUS

Posted: Aug 30, 2010

Lines typed divided by lines per hour = how many hours you actually worked, even if what you have on your time sheet is more?  Does this make sense to anyone?

It is lines typed divided by hours worked if you are - see message

looking to find your lines per hour. Not exactly sure what you are asking.

Sorry, let me try to clear it up - ANONYMOUS

I am being told that even though I am clocked in and working my full shift, when they divide my lines I typed that day, by my calculated lph for that day, I am actually not working my required hours. I'm just wondering if this is a fair way to judge hours worked.

Example:

Typed 2000 lines today
LPH calculated at 325

2000 / 325 = 6.15 hours.

Even though I workd my full 8 hour shift, I am only being given credit for 6.15 hours.

If you are an Employee, they cannot do that.  That is fuzzy math and a way for them to deny you benefits or pay.  If you are an Employee, contact the Department of Labor immediately before they try to pull any more fuzzy math on you.

Not technically an employee. I just thought it was really strange!

Where are they getting their parameters from? - this is wrong

By law you are allowed two 15-minute breaks.

OSHA also recommends that people who keyboard for a living get up EVERY HOUR and walk around to eliminate risk of DVT and other issues.

I'd like to know where the come up with the grand plan that you will type 325 lph (and if this is coming from your program calculations, that's solely active keyboarding which is crap).

I'd definitely be fighting this.

I'm so sad now. I really like this job. I was hoping to make it my home. Now I'm not sure. Oh God! To have to look for a job again, this will be a night mare.
OSHA's two 15-minute breaks don't count for us - typingfool
[ In Reply To ..]
I already looked into this with OSHA and they said since I'm working alone at home, it doesn't count. It is only when 2 or more people are working at the same physical office, so if you're home working alone, we don't get the same OSHA benefits as someone else working in an office setting. MTSOs know this, so they know they can get away with being the slave drivers they are and there is nothing we can do about it other than quit.

It seems that MTs are screwed every which way.
Wondering how this works too. If it is active keyboarding... - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
Then does that mean whenever you look something up, do research on Google, etc., you're off the clock? Shouldn't it be by system time?

Dang, that's an excellent LPH; I've never done that on a regular basis with straight transcription. And to think you'd be penalized for it. Maybe you should slow down? (2000/200 lph = 10 hours, hah)

Something's wrong with how they do the calculation of LPH, I'd say, if you know your tush is in the chair the requisite number of hours, doing not just transcribing but research of terms, docs' names, etc., etc.
Also wondering... - MTNewbie

I thought lines per hour were calculated by taking total lines and dividing it by hours worked.

If you have your total lines divided by lines per hour equals total hours worked, this seems to be the same math to me.

What am I missing? Sorry to be such a newbie, but I'm just trying to figure this out!
I wish I could explain it to you - ANONYMOUS

But all I know is the lph calculation is really high somehow. If I type one report the whole day, my line count can be 345. It all really depends on how fast we are. So I'm guessing the answer to my dilemma is to just slow way, way down. This is such a crazy situation.

May I ask which company this is, so I can avoid it? - nm

I will say though, that you wouldn't believe it, this company is one that is considered one of the good ones on this forum. If they do figure out its me and fire me, I will blast their butts!

VBC Calculation
Mar 30, 2010

I see periodic discussions on this board regarding VBC pay.  There have been "white papers" and similar studies issued by various bodies, including, I believe AHIMA, and here's what I've gotten as a way to calculate the meaning of VBC rates.  I suggest when offered a VBC rate, you ask your prospective employer or manager how they have calculated the relationship between the "standard" 65-character with spaces line rate and the VBC rate.  They should be happy to supply y ...

The question someone asked about OT calculation at Transcend got me going because I recently had to figure it out for myself when the OT I received did not come close to what I had calculated it would be.  If you go to page 34 of the MLS Handbook on the Transcend MLS website, you will read the following: "For overtime purposes, the base hourly rate for MLS is the total compensation for the pay period (before OT) divided by the total number of hours worked during the pay period.  HALF ...

QA And Calculation Of Score
