With everybody jumping ship from these companies-- - Sick of it

Posted: Mar 07, 2014

and everybody sending resumes to the few remaining companies that are left, this is going to cause a big glut of hungry MTs looking for jobs, so guess what?  The MTSOs are going to start lowering their line rates, upping their requirements for equipment, internet, etc., and the MTs are going to be the ones losing even more in the end.  Then with shipping the remaining work to India and the EHR, it is DEFINITELY time to get out of MT!  The ones who can't see this and are hanging on are going to be in for a rude awakening and it is going to happen sooner rather than later.

Best quick fix is to get a job as a scribe. - sm

Maybe the opposite of what you predict will come true if we just quit applying for MT jobs. EVERY MT (LOTS!!!) I know is currently looking to get out of the field or has gotten out.

Agree with the above poster. People aren't - hanging on like you think.

[ In Reply To ..]
There seems to be a few here who say they can't leave because this is all they've ever done and can't do anything else. Those are the only ones I see hanging on.

I am staying because I am in school. they will have to fire me - or lay me off. Hard to find a job that

[ In Reply To ..]
affords me this much flexibility. I also cannot stand on my feet long because I had a trimalleolar fracture in 2011 along with breaking my other foot and now my feet swell. so not everybody is leaving. But I will be honest..I do hope there is a mass exodus so I will have a job for a little while longer.

eew, I would never be a scribe. In the room with the patients? - not me, nope. NM

NEWBIES - me

[ In Reply To ..]
Yes, I just shudder, when someone gets the bright idea that they think my life as an MT is cushy and that is what they want to do--easy money, easy life. They tell me they can type...and worked in a hospital file room once, so they know all about records, hey, there's a course at the career center about transcription, then I can type like you, right? I try to let them down easy and just explain---go to coding ICD-10, that would be a good job. Just not transcription, it isn't going to be here all that much longer.....

is this like a reverse crystal ball? - This happened three

years ago or more.

As someone who is still making it in MT, I don't see that I'm in for a rude awakening because I've stayed abreast of what's happening. But just because other MTs are losing their jobs, doesn't mean I'm going to throw my hands up and declare the war over.

Some of us will stay for as long as the ride lasts and that could be a while. There *ARE* still dictators using cassette tapes. Just because the "biggies" are throwing their weight around doesn't ring the death knell for everyone.

i agree - memt

I'm so glad you said that. I'm stilling hanging in there and doing pretty well. I work for a "smaller" service, and have plenty of work all the time. There haven't been any red flags and there's been nothing to make me thing the end is near, but reading some of these posts makes me so paranoid.

You are a couple of the lucky ones - Sick of it

Try being laid off due to no work, trying to find a job and being offered 6 and 3 cents per line with 40+ years of experience, having been a CMT, and 100% QA. Things wouldn't look quite so rosy if you were in my shoes.
I'm sorry - memt

I didn't mean to sound insensitive. I understand what you're saying. I only meant to say that there are some of us who are still doing okay and I guess I was just happy to hear from another MT who is also still doing okay because it makes me feel a little more secure.

I didn't mean to come off as bragging :(

[ In Reply To ..]
We realize the fortunate ones are not bragging. Happy for them that things are still going well. We just ask that they be grateful for their situation because some of us have been let down over and over no matter how good we are at our jobs. And, some of us live remotely so our only options have to hook up with the "big boys."
only options - crystal ball
[ In Reply To ..]
A lot of us live remotely. I worked for Medquist many, many, many years ago and realized their corporate screwing was not for me. I wouldn't work for Mmodal or Nuance even if they offered to pay me 20 cpl.

I would encourage those of you whose resumes are backed up by actual skills, to keep looking. A lot of the smaller companies are getting clients who are not happy with the big boys. Get your resume redone so it stands out. Keep trying. I wish you luck, I really do.

No one said the view was rosy. The point was those of us who are still making it are not walking around with our head in the clouds or the sand. We're well aware that there are major changes going on. But WE are still making it. My making it does NOT mean you have to feel insulted or throw back in my face that your view is not rosy. I'm well aware that many views are not rosy. I can't change that for you.

BTW, I'm working for 7.5 cpl and kissed a whole bunch of frogs in my nearly 40 years in this business, so I know what it's like to test and get hired and realize you made a mistake and that you need to keep kissing frogs. I get that.

The OP more or less said the entire profession was over. My point is it's not. And I don't need threatened with a "rude awakening" because I'm still gainfully employed.

Sorry, laugh all you want. There wasn't anything wrong with my reply.
You seem to be rubbing everyone else's face in it that YOU have a good job - How long will it last

You will be on here crying the blues because you lost it to EHR or India just like everybody else has.

I work for a smaller service as well -- straight typing and making 7.5 cpl right now and my paychecks average about $900 to $1000 every two weeks, which is fine by me. We have "slow periods, but generally maybe one day on the weekend and maybe one day during the week, but they have no plans to go to VR -- they tried it and neither the service OR the docs liked it. I am hoping to tough it out for a few more years before I can retire.

MT still OK - me

I just referred to this as I'll ride the ride until they tell me to get off, and, I too, have a good job as an MT, full-time with a hospital, good hourly, full benefits. I understand both sides, I am also working PT for service that has just gotten snapped up....Best to keep our eyes open and cover our bases.

You are right, but in terms of the BIG Picture - things have changed SM

[ In Reply To ..]
And jobs like yours are scant. I believe there will always be MTs out there still making it, but the reality is those jobs will be extremely hard to come by and without a doubt, very sparse.

a new medical building on our campus and they have let us help design the transcription office. It has been a major expenditure and like you, I am going to stay as long as the ride goes on. Recently had my annual evaluation and I was not disappointed with the raise. When it ends it ends, but it has served me well for 35 years.

But you could have said it "quieter." - Lucky you. NM

We need to take massive action to change this industry.  Are we going to continue to take the lies from the thieving MTSOs?   A lawsuit here, a lawsuit there, that is helpful for the few involved, but as a group we have to make change happen now.   Fear is keeping us here, and that is what they want.  They steal our pay, they disrespect us, while they get rich.  That's not right in my world.  I deserve to have work when I log in.  I deserve to be paid a ...
